Who first footed?
Can remember when i was a kid mum used to stick a plate out on new years eve and the first person who came in HAD to have dark hair. On the plate was a piece of coal (and when we had the gas fire fitted - the gas bill!), glass of whisky, a mince pie and 5p. It was supposed to bring luck into the house for the new year.
So who first footed last night? I forgot all about it until my bro just come in about half an hour ago. :o |
Re: Who first footed?

Re: Who first footed?
It was always custom for the first visitor to bring a lump of coal with them.

Re: Who first footed?
At five minutes to twelve each year my Ma would shut one of the lads out with a basket.......in the basket was salt, bread, a coin and coal......Once big ben had stopped chiming she let them in.
The stuff in the basket was supposed to bring good luck....there were many years when I'm not sure it helped.......but then again who knows what would have happened if she hadn't done that? We might have had worse luck. |
Re: Who first footed?
With us more often than not it was my brother coming in from a night out .. had the orders to not to forget to bring the plate in one year he forgot and went out the back door and came in the front with the plate.

Not sure which one of my son and his two mates came through the door first (or probably fell through it ) at 4.40 a.m. Presume son, as he would be the one to have the key. Didn't have any coal anyway, and no doubt would have been stepped over .. For the people on here who have had a rotten 2007, best wishes that 2008 will be an improvement. Can't say I need a better year really, last year was just fine, nothing too bad happened to me and count myself lucky with what I have got at the moment. Just my wish that it carries on this way. |
Re: Who first footed?

Re: Who first footed?
It was me who first footed in our house. I went out for a fag after I'd watched Myleene Klass play Auld Lang Syne on the piano on television. :)
I'm not a man and I wasn't carrying coal but I do have dark hair. :D |
