Mcdonalds now has Wifi

I went through the drive-thru the other day and say that mcdonalds now has wifi. Can you imagine pulling out your laptop in mcdonalds? You wouldn't get one foot out the door without being mugged!

Doubt anyone will risk it to be honest, but what are your views on it.

The more places that have wifi the better I think, although dunno why I'm saying that as I still haven't got round to buying myself a laptop!!

I thought of it as I was thinknig of somewhere to go tomorrow to study in peace, but I need the internet AND my laptop, so the library isnt much use. Why the libraries haven't got wifi yet I do not know. Would make my life easier. Thankfully I'm going back to Lancaster next week so I can use the internet there, and the uni library is ace. Dont highly rate the town library though, even worse than ossy library.

Libraries don't have wifi prob down to cost, whereas mcd's will prob gain from more custom

You'd think it'd be funded by the council or whatever though, after all, it wouldnt cost that much more to set up than the internet they already have surely?

I mentioned this ages ago.

As for why, remember that laptops are not the only wifi devices. A decent number of phones have it as well. I use wifi on my 'now ancient' N80 all the time.

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

My concerns are around how they monitor what people do. e.g. I could take my laptop down to the car park and sit outside. I could do anything on there and they have no log of who I am.

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

McDs in Lancaster used to have computer access at so much an hour. I don't know why they abandoned it. One campsite we stayed on had the same system but kids kept messing up the PCs so maybe that had something to do with McDs problem. It is really handy to know there are places you can access the internet on the move. That internet cafe in Accy didn't catch on though did it?

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Perhaps they are better investing in security guards and cctv if your'e going to get mugged.

Thats understandable, burgers and shakes don't have wi-fi connectability :)

Theres a big wireless initiative going on at the moment with the government and Bt (i believe) bringing in wireless cities and then broadening further.

A friend of mine used to eat Chinese pork ribs when she was on her PC. The keys were stuck with what she referred to as "porky rib juice". She use to periodically WASH it! http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/i...milies/eek.gif

plus companies like The cloud

Wifimax is a initiative to get broadband out there without needing cables. People like 3 are doing well in this space in fact for £10 a month you can have broadband from them via a usb dongle. Once their network is HSPDA enabled across teh counrty the need for a physical line will have gone.

Best way to clean a keyboard (not laptop or powereed wireless ones please! ) is to chuck it in the shower. dry it slowly in an airing cupboard befor plugging it back in and it will be fine

She used to dunk hers in a washing up bowl and then dry it in the airing cupboard.

I wouldn't feel comfortable getting my laptop out in Accy McDonalds. I'd be too scared that someone would run off with it.

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

I eat allsorts at mine with having to do most of my studying on the laptop. The keyboard has a few crumbs down it, but its the screen that gets really filthy. I've had it a year and I've typed so much on it that the surface of the keys is wearing off and they're looking like normal 'untextured' plastic. Funnily enough the actual letters aren't wearing off.

I forgot about PSP's, though I thought phones mainly used GPS rather than wifi.

I'm guessing its not a secure network then?

What do you mean by that? Its free wifi so no its not got WEP encryption or anything. The login page appears when you try and access a webpage while connected to the wireless network and all you have to do is put your information into it. Which is just name+email+postcode (all of which you can just put false ones for if you don't wish to hand them over).

Phones can have GPS (which is global positioning system) e.g. N95 , you might be thinking of GPRS which is data transfer which is a bit slower than 3G.

The N80 was the first mobile with wifi which is why I got it. I use it all the time.

You could use it your car in the carpark at mcdonalds but not sure if the signal will reach

I'd just rather use a more secure connection than one that can be accessed from all around mcdonalds and not just inside. How can they even monitor who's doing what on it?

entwisi 03-01-2008 20:15

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Why?

I'm afraid people have soo litle understanding of security of networks they believe stuff they shouldn't and more often leave themselves wide open without realising it.

I haven't used any encryption for nearly 7 years now. I do however know how to secure my laptops and network.

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2008 08:27

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Why should or would McDonald's monitor who is doing what?

entwisi 04-01-2008 08:52

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

so that if pedo X turns up they know who/what he's up to.

Or if I turn up with my laptop with a mail server and proceed to flood teh net with spam

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2008 10:11

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Is it up to McDonalds to monitor that though? Do they have the responsibility to do that?

entwisi 04-01-2008 10:19

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Yes they should. It is their responsibility as it is them supplying the network access. Just like each ISP has to track who is on what I address and what they do should teh Police want it for evidence.

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2008 10:59

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

So how do they do that? Do they have a way of knowing who used their laptop outside in the car? Can they trace people back from that? I know the ISP can do it from your location at home but how can they do it when you're on the move? I don't understand that.

entwisi 04-01-2008 11:12

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

when the laptop connects it loads a logon page before you can go anywhere that you have to enter some details. I pointed out previously and confirmed by Cyfr that you can put anything in currently. I doubt they will be allowed to get away with this long term due to the lack of traceability.

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2008 11:21

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

Ah so it's up to the laptop user to be honest about who they are?

entwisi 04-01-2008 11:25

Re: Mcdonalds now has Wifi

yep, and spammers/pedos are reknown for their honesty :D

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2008 11:28
