n power 1st to go up this year

N power have got in 1st this year to up their prices, gas is due to go up by 17.5 % and electric by 12.5 % depending on where you live, the rest of the suppliers are due to put theirs up aswell. now we were told that by cutting down on the amount of fuel we use will save us money and cut down our carbon footprint. so we cut our usage and the suppliers up the price, its not fair really is it, i would put up a link but i dont know how to sorry

watched it on the news jacky, think its as well hanging on to see what the rest of these rip-off merchants do.

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Notice how wages and benefits dont rise by the same amount to cover the added costs. How the hell are people who are struggling already, supposed to cope. Really annoys me this.

cashman 04-01-2008 23:16

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

yer quite correct speedy, but the power suppliers do not give a monkeys how people cope.

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

It's simple isn't it. Everyone who is currently with Npower should switch to someone else immediately. Then they will have no customers at all. That would prompt them to reduce the price or shut up shop.

Speedy 04-01-2008 23:47

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

But surely then all the other companies would put prices up due to high demand.

I would have thought the other companies would be able to drop prices buy virtue of having a larger customer base, the rest will jump on the bandwagon tho...shop around thats all we can do :(

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

i am with N power and they have been fine up to now, i dont like the service we got from BG or powergen, theres not many more out there left to try, do the suppliers actually buy the fuel from another source or are they actually producing it themselves?, they say its to cover costs of the rise in the price of fuel, but surely they are making a profit from the price hike too?

Speedy 05-01-2008 00:05

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

I dont understand what difference there is between the companies? If your gas and leccy are working and they are reasonably priced then surely they are a good company? So where do the not pleased with service problems come from?

jackyalex 05-01-2008 00:23

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

the customer services that promises to sort out the duplicate bills you have recieved or the wrong meter readings or the red letters you get even though you have paid the bill months before, and the time you have to wait just to get through to C/S is a joke

Speedy 05-01-2008 00:26

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Ah i understand, so its not to do with the actual products they are supplying, its the customer case thats the issue.

jackyalex 05-01-2008 00:30

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

its all part of the service that you are paying for, it was so much easier when i had prepayment meters, no bills to deal with

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

I have lived at this address 5 1/2 yrs and have swopped 5 times - its easy - I have heard that it might become compulsory to stay with a company a year before you can swop.

Prepayment meters always havee the highest tarriff

pipinfort 05-01-2008 08:59

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

we`ve been with Scottish Power for about 8 years and have been very happy,i`m always looking to swap but when i enter my details on the various sites Scottish power always come back as the cheapest, energy prices rise every year (as does everthing else..EXCEPT WAGES grrrr) apart from last year when the price cuts appeared along with a mass marketing campaign( which we don`t get whenthe prices go up), price cuts don`t fool anybody , we knew last year that this year they would want their money back!!! RIP of britain continues!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

MargaretR 05-01-2008 09:09

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Last year when I swopped, I got £30 cashback by using a swopping website. (got £15 the year before)
Some fuel providers offer tariffs at lower rates to internet 'sign-ups', provided you submit meter reads online and have online bills.

PS - when swopping it is best to have collected your own data about usage - ie KWH per annum

N-Power have recently bought homeserve (the old servowarm), they have to get the money back somehow, can't do it through the breakdown insurance for heating, otherwise they wouldn't be able to compete with the likes of British Gas, I don't care, neither can compete with us. lol

It got worse when i rang them, as the bill was estimated when i told them my meter reading that was more than the estimate:eek: apparently according to their figures the difference between the reading taken in dec & the reading i gave yesterday was equivalent to a quarters bill just in a fortnight & im using no more eleccy than previous bills other than a few xmas lights not a whole street or house full!!

They are going to [hopefully] send someone to check the meter on the 24th to see if its ticking over more or theres a fault on it - also got an electrician coming tommorow to double check the wiring to out rule power surges as had a few electrical blips lately too, but for now doing a daily meter reading check too.

If no joy out of that then its a trip to cab & MP as energy hiking prices for sake of it shouldnt be happening to fuel profits at expense of customers basic need, N power had a price increase in October 07 & another January 08, so this bill im querying has Octobers hike price on it & im dreading next bill with an increase on top of an increase but least a final one as i'll of switched by then.

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Meters aren't perfect
I once had a gas meter than ran slow- I had lovely low bills for a few years - thought it was due to the 3ft walls of the cottage I lived in - until the meter started running backwards - and was replaced :(
At my next property I had huge gas bills and blamed it on being a gable end with high ceilings. Eventually I asked for the meter to be checked. I had to pay a fee for the check but it was refunded when the check revealed that it was faulty. A refund was calculated on the percentage it had been found running fast, but that refund only was backdated for 2 quarters.
Ah well - swings and roundabouts!
Ever since, I have monitored my fuel usage. It pays to discuss usage with neighbours with similar sized property and lifestyle usage.
All meters (gas AND electric) are capable of developing faults.

If they were the ones who suggested it, they shouldn't charge - If YOU asked for it, they will.
In 1980 the charge was about £15 - rules may have changed now.
The meters are sent 'for government test' - ie independant

Pre-payment metering is the most expensive way of paying for gas and electric.

Although you didn’t have a quarterly bill you still had a regular bill in charging your card meter.

Yeh it is i came off pre payment to bill on the eleccy, though keeping the gas on prepay for now cos as i have found with the eleccy the gas will be the worst bill for nasty surprises.

You pay a standing charge on the pre pay meters that you dont for bill.

Looks like its british gas turn to put their prices up:rolleyes:
British Gas, the UK's biggest power provider, is to put up both gas and electricity bills by 15%.

The price rises for its 16m customers will come into effect immediately.:(

They rang me up yesterday afternoon asking if I would be prepared to return to them for my gas and electric. Glad I told them to ****** off. Told them they abuse their customers as they are always one of the first to hike prices and one of the last to cut prices.

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

I heard today that british gas are on 600 odd million profit, and that is five times per person more than any other company, n power recently bought homeserve (old servowarm) so they are offering central heating, servicing and heating breakdown cover, but like bg, the terms and conditions are terrible, more get out clauses than the government!

Bonnyboy 18-01-2008 20:01

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Apparently the UK can supply more gas than we actually need. We don’t have the capacity to store our supplies, so we sell it to Continental Europe in the summer, they store it and sell us it back during the high usage months (according to some bloke on the news) Just what kind of MUGS are we ?

I seem to be missing the point about high gas prices being in some way linked to the high oil price, is gas not gas and oil… oil. Maybe I’m just too numb to see the equation

jambutty 18-01-2008 21:13

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Unless I’ve missed it there is no news from Powergen.

But then they can’t even send bills out on time. I’m still waiting for the one that should have been sent before Xmas. I rang them 2 weeks ago to ask where my bill was. They said that they would send me another. I rang them this morning to ask about my bill. They said that they would send me another.

This is the second quarter on the trot when I have had to ask for my bill.

Maybe they are angling to force me into a Direct Debit scheme?

Stanleymad 01-02-2008 13:18

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

If N power couldnt get any worse - if you are thinking of going with them or already with them - switch!!

Just got an official threat letter of non payment when i have paid [got the receipt in front of me], despite ringing manager with complaint of high bill & disputing it & him saying he was going to deal with it & get a meter checker in etc. WELL he LIED!!

Anyone got offwatt or an official complaint body - may even do watchdog at this rate for cheek of hiking prices & not giving people the correct allowed time to pay before sending bailiffs when said customer has already paid & told them i have!!!!:mad:

Stanleymad 01-02-2008 14:14

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

Now only dealing with them in writing - email sent to their complaints dept to the manager, whom im sure will no doubt get back to me with regard of rubbish treatment his company have handled this case - very quick;)

Re: n power 1st to go up this year

As I said, N Power have recently aquired homeserve, all thier efforts are being ploughed into getting british gas's heating cover customers, I wouldn't have either in my house! They have redefined the annual service, it is now an annual inspection, and they inspect it (look at it) and very little else, which for the cost. is ridiculous!
