Food Allergies

I was wondering how many other people out there suffer from food allergies/intolerances?

My list seems to be growing every year - it started with salmon as a child, developing to shellfish and over the last 7 years all other fish too, (can't even put my hand in the tropical tank without getting a rash!). More recently I've developed reactions to fresh Pineapple, anything with Aspartame in (artificial sweetener in fizzy drinks, cordials etc) & all anti-inflammatory medications.

The newest one is any product which has E numbers 249-252 in, they are preservatives sodium & potassium nitrate & nitrite used mainly in pork products such as bacon, sausage, pate, cooked meat & even tins of corned beef. After doing some reading I found that these chemicals are also used in fertilisers & explosives, are potentially cancer causing and are banned from being used in baby or infant foods. I know there was a warning not to long ago about bacon & cancer and a thread to match http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...con-34494.html
it seems it may not be the bacon but the additives instead?

Has anyone else experienced anything similar or is it just me ? It's taking me ages now to do the grocery shopping as I have to read every label! :( At this rate I'll end up boycotting the supermarkets and only buy fresh stuff!

I have a tendency to “throw up” if I put vinegar on anything these days, it can really spoil fish and chips. Must be my body trying to tell me something:(

I'm allergic to prawns but not all the time, cant eat Iceland but M&S ok, weird, but the palms of my hands go purple and sometimes face and chest too. My little boy (14months) cant have dairy which I found hard at first but I've now found alternatives to most things, hoping he'll grow out of it but who knows?

I've been getting stomach cramps from milk recently, I wondered what it was at first but its every time I have a glass of milk. Can you develope an intolerancy to milk like that? I always got the impression you couldnt just develope new allergies but I guess thats silly... I like milk though but I suppose thats not an allergy, as I dont get rashes or swell up or anything like that.

I have always been allergic to penecillin, to the point where, because cows were treaed with it, I couldn't tolerate any dairy products at all, as the years have gone by, I could drink milk by about 5 years, butter by 11, yoghurt by 25, pizza with very little cheddar by 35, and now I can have mild cheddar, but has to be on cottage pie or something, I didn't like any of the above for certain lengths of time, and still can't stand strong cheese cooking, makes me vomit!

I have no problems with reactions to foods (if they are pesticide free)
I do have sinus and 'nasal lining' problems with inhaled irritants.
We are exposed to chemical bombarment in our daily lives. A reaction may suddenly appear after a lifetime of cumulative exposure.
The food allergies could be an ingestion of chemical by the animal you are eating and the pesticides and weed killers used in crop growing

Panther that is an important allergy to mention when/if he goes into hospital.

Re: Food Allergies

Was allergic when i was a baby to milk - when i was born i lost weight instead of putting it on in the end it was the doc who came in to see bro who had been ill, took one look at me when mum was trying to feed me with newspapers spread all around cos i threw everything back up and i did right over him and he said i was allergic to milk and gave mum a prescription for something called allergalac and i thrived on that. Now drink milk in brews, eat cheese like its going out of fashion, it dont bother me.

Otherwise im fine - not allergic to anything food wise. Cant use bubble bath, shower gel the stuff you get in gift packs etc because that brings me out in lumps - but yet i can use body shops glycerine soap that is perfumed, can use perfume but the other stuff no way.

Panther if possible can you make sure he carries a card for warning people (we now use latex free equipment) just in case he has a wound and someone has only got latex gloves and he is not able to talk for whatever reason....

In fact it might be a good idea for those who have allergies to carry a warning too....

I'm not allergic to any foods, although when I was a kid I once ate so many bananas in that I brought myself out in a rash!!! I am however allergic to make-up, even the hypoallergenic stuff, I go red and blotchy, and extremely hot and itchy, not good!!!

Just found out our 20 week old daughter Emily is intolerent to dairy produce, kinda explains why she was throwing up loads of her milk, always had a tummy ache and has had a cold since she was born (which has now gone!!!), after a brief chat with the midwife I put her on infasoy and now I have a completely different child!!! Now she doesn't cry loads coz shes got tummy ache and she doesn't need burping constantly, also we've suddenly gone very wriggly and smiley!!! Brilliant!!

Yes, you can I have.

I used to have drink lots of milk as a child but I have developed a terrible intolerance to it over the last 2 years.

I also have problems with: Wheat, gluten, soya, oranges, strawberies, almonds, caffeine and lots of other food stuffs. Oh, and I am vegetarian!

You will probably find that make up which is totally free from petrochemicals will be fine.
Even Body Shop stuff contains 'nasties'

I've been on a quest in the last few days for pate which does not contain the preservatives I'm allergic to, tried Tesco, Asda, M & S, Accrington Indoor & Outdoor Market - can't find any anywhere! I really fancied warm crusty rolls with a bit of pate - no such luck! Does anyone know of anywhere that sells home-made or freshly made pate? - I'm getting withdrawal symptoms!

Have thought of that...but where can I buy chicken livers from? I've got the same problem - I can't find any! I'm going to try Blackburn Market later in the week.

MargaretR 16-01-2008 14:20

Re: Food Allergies

I used to make my own pate about 15 yrs ago and got my livers in frozen packs in Asda. I have just looked on Asda website and they aren't listed now. I suppose any butcher worth his salt could get them for you, or perhaps chicken/egg stalls on the market (if they still exist too)
When you find some here is the recipe

CHICKEN LIVER PATE WITH COGNAC Serves 6+

Ingredients

8 oz (225 g) chicken livers, rinsed and trimmed
2 tablespoons Cognac (or brandy)
8 oz (225 g) butter
2 level teaspoons mustard powder
¼ level teaspoon ground mace
1 level teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, plus 6 small sprigs to garnish
2 cloves garlic, crushed
salt and freshly milled black pepper

Method

Melt about 25g of the butter in a medium-sized, heavy-based frying pan and fry the chicken livers over a medium heat for about 5 minutes. Keep them on the move, turning them over quite frequently. Check for doneness by cutting into the largest pieces - you want them pink on the inside but not bloody. Remove them from the pan using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a blender or food processor.

Melt 150 g of the remaining butter in the same pan and add this to the blender or food processor. Then pour the Cognac on to the juices left in the frying pan, making sure you scrape up all the flavourful bits stuck to the bottom of the pan, and pour that over the livers. Add the mustard, mace, thyme and garlic, season well with salt and freshly milled black pepper, and blend until you have a smooth, velvety purée.

Divide the paté between three large individual or six small ramekins/pots. Melt the remaining 50g of butter and pour a little over each remakin to seal. Press a sprig of thyme on top and leave them to get cold before covering with clingfilm and refrigerating until needed.

PS - just found some(frozen) on Tesco website
