Post Office Closures
3 Hyndburn post office closures have been announced tonight;
Church Post Office, 9A Market Street, Accrington Huncoat Post Office, 10-12 Station Road, Huncoat St Huberts Post Office, 108 Queen Street, Great Harwood Can't be many left now. |
Re: Post Office Closures
We were only saying on Saturday that we were surprised the one in Market Street had managed to survive - we shouldn't have said anything! :D
|
Re: Post Office Closures
Also closing ones in Hapton & Higham. Wonder where there nearest ones will be afterwards
|
Re: Post Office Closures
That's terrible. :(
There are a lot of old people in Church and Huncoat who use the Post Offices and it'll be hard for them having to get the bus into Accrington in all weathers. Makes me very cross. How many more are we going to lose? |
Re: Post Office Closures
A few years ago you couldn't buy a stamp anywhere else. The decline began when shops started selling them. The only thing that kept Post Offices going was benefit Giros - now the money is paid into bank accounts there was nothing to stop their rapid downhill decline.
There may well be hardship experienced by some elderly folk who regarded the cashing of their pension as their only social excursion in an otherwise lonely existence= SAD I rarely visit a Post Office, but on Monday I had to venture out in the wild wet winter weather to return an Ebay item, and in my ignorance I walked into what once was Moorend Post Office. I then went to the new PO facility in the Ossy Coop, which is nearer. My cousin in South Wales is dreading the closure of her local PO because the salary the shopkeeper gets for having the facility in her local shop is the only thing that keeps it financially viable for the shop owner, and there is no other shop for 15 miles. So these closures are saving costs but causing some social problems. |
Re: Post Office Closures
I've just found the full list of those earmarked for closure. After a 6 week consultation period, it seems East Lancs is going to lose 23 Post Offices!

Re: Post Office Closures
I think that the closure of these post offices will cause a great deal of hardship to alot of people. I use the post office to pay utility bills, our council tax and our car ta. I know that I could very easily pay these either by DD, interent/telephone banking or online (in the case of our car tax). But prefer to pay when it is convenient for me rather than the company. I often use the post office in Queen Street, the postmaster is very helpful if you need to ask any questions.
If you make it even more difficult to use Post Offices, the revenue (for the ones still open) will fall even further, because people will use the alternative ways to pay bills etc. I noticed that the Hapton Post Office, is one marked for closure, it will be very difficult, if you have no transport getting to another post office from Hapton (also the same applies to the Higham Postr Office), as it will be several miles to the nearest Post Office. The rationale behind some of these closures are very hard to begin to undersatand. |
Re: Post Office Closures
do they post letters now in hapton? thought they still used the deadwood stage,or smoke signals.:D

Re: Post Office Closures
Personally I blame all of you who voted for Thatcher, and her backing for the free market economy.
We're reaping what we sowed. |

Re: Post Office Closures
Perhaps they could have been kept open if the the £25 billion had been invested in the Post Office instead of in That Rocky Rock Bank!
It works out that something like £2,000 has been invested per man woman and child in the country to that bank, but a handy just around the corner post office can be left to go to the wall! |

Re: Post Office Closures
since these post offices have shut, i thought accy one would have been very busy, but its been empty nearly everytime i go in:rolleyes:

Re: Post Office Closures
About 15 years ago a visit to Accy GPO was a thing to groan about --long queues most of the time----perhaps if they had made visits less unpleasant then they might have had more public support now.
|
Re: Post Office Closures
looks like the one on Blackburn rd has survived the closers upto now anyway
|
Re: Post Office Closures
Post Offices are depressing. I think the larger ones like in Accy should be closed and the little ones should stay open.
The large post office in Lancaster never seems to have many people in it, no more than the smaller ones anyway. I think the little ones probably get more custom but they cant do as much as the big one here. Shame really. |

It was the Thatcher government who started denationalising public service industries, such as water/power utilities, transport etc. |

Re: Post Office Closures
After what they did with the one in town we have boycotted it ( sacked everyone and replaced them with untrained low paid workers) we now always use the one on avenue parade, where the staff are much more helpful and friendly.:D

Re: Post Office Closures
On economic grounds, I don't kow why Church PO is on the hitlist. Every time I have popped in there has been at least one person waiting to be served and several times I've had to wait a good 10 minutes or so. There was a rumour some time ago that it was due to move elsewhere in Church, but I suspect that will come to nowt. Its a case again of moving services out of Church - we lost our banks years ago, more than half our pubs have gone, the libary has gone...the butcher, the barber..all gone. I suppose the only good news after this is that there will be nowt else to lose.

It seems strange that they leave that one open and it's so close to the main Post Office in Accrington yet there are to be closures in places like Belthorn, Huncoat and Hapton where their Post Office is the only one. :( |

Think could be something to do with the lottery ? .. only place in Hyndburn you get a payout if you win over £500. The General does not do this. |

Re: Post Office Closures
Some 59 branches across Lancashire, Fylde and Southport have been earmarked for closure under the Post Office Ltd proposals.
Six will be replaced with so-called "outreach solutions" - scaled down post office services in pubs or local shops - in a move likely to be met with stiff opposition from councils and communities. Dozens of Post Offices set to be axed - Chester standard 'So that's two pints of lager, one salt 'n' vinegar crisps, two pork scrathings, and one renewed car tax?' |
Re: Post Office Closures
Do I see a pattern here? Ramsbottom, Edenfield, Whalley, Clitheroe, Wilpshire, Langho, I think there are more post offices in these 'expensive' locations than most!

Having your pension etc paid into a bank account is all very well, if you can access your money easily, but if there is no cash machine in the area in which you live you will not find it very easy to get at your money. Also not all cash machines are free, many charge to take out money. Many older people do not like using cash machines (fear of being mugged whilst you are taking out your money is one concern), also lots of shops now will not accept cheques as a form of payment. I do feel that large supermarkets, such as Asda are being penny pinching in this instant - they do not have to pay any cheques into the bank so do not incur bank charges. It is all very well saying that pensions and other benefits can be paid into bank accounts, but not everyone is able to open a bank account (because of problems with having enough ID etc), and people with very low income are not the people most banks want as customers. Banks are only interested in how much profit they can make from customers, by selling loans/credit cards etc to customers. People with low incomes do not match the profile of customers they want to attract. Even if people have bank accounts, not everyone can use services such as online banking, because not everyone has access to the internet. If you have a low income the cost of a computer and internet access would not feature very high on your list of essential household items. |

Realise is difficult for some of the elderly to become conversant with banking (now a dying breed), but plenty of help out there for them, and the safest way of receiving their pensions regularly without having to worry about a trip to the local post office every week, or hiding their money under the mattress. Lots of pensioners over 70 are just being stubborn, a new wave of pensioners coming up now .. me being a prime example. Anyway, with a bank account comes a debit card .. so no reason for too much cash carrying these days. Lots of new ATM machines being installed in closer proximity than ever their post office was, and very few now charge. As for the danger of this, how many incidents were reported re: people being robbed after visiting Post Offices to collect their weekly benefits, pensions, etc., bet lot more than collecting at a cash machine.. and most do have CCTV now. Online banking is not a necessity, so your argument re. buying expensive equipment as computers does not hold up. 'Tis sad, I know, that for the minority who find banking difficult is now over-ruled by those who do not .. but that is life unfortunately and in 10 years time the gap will have almost closed. |
Re: Post Office Closures
Just as a matter of interest, can you tell me how many free cash dispensers, there are in Clayton. I know the Co-op one is free, but don't know about the others.
In Huncoat, as far as I know the nearest free cash machine is at the Griffin Garage, which is a hike if you live in the village. It is not just for drawing pensions that people need a local post office, it is where many people pay their household bills. Also with the lots of older, they worry about forgetting their PIN number, and most would panic, if the cash dispenser would not return their card, especailly if they did not receive any money. In the last 18 months I have had both one of my credit card and a debit card used fraudulently (in both cases the cards never left my possession). In fact over a £1000.00 was spent fraudulently on my credit card. I now acoid drawing any cash out of cash machines. If I have to do so, I use a cashcard for an account that never has more than £50.00 in, and has no overdraft facility at all (as it is on a savings account). If this is used fraudently the most amyone could get is £50.00. I would hate to think an older person would have to deal with the loss of money because of fraud on the use of their debit card. |

There are 6 AtM's in Church situated at the following locations - Dill Hall Post Office (ATM charges are £1.50) Dill Hall Newsagents (ATM charges are £1.50) Church Hall Garage (this one is free) AZ Mini Market - Regent Road (ATM charges are £1.50) Barry & Gails Victoria Street (ATM charges are £1.50) Thorn Inn St James Road (ATM charges are £1.50) Whilst I agree that these might be nearer than the post office on Market Street that is to close, with the exception of Church Hall Garage they will all charge you for taking out your money. I have just checked in Clayton, there are 5 ATM's and only the one in the Co-op is free. 3 of the others charge £1.50 and the other charges £1.75. If you want to check the location of ATM's in any area this website gives you the info (and charges for taking money out - if applicable, also hours of operation and wether they are wheelchair friendly). http://www.multimap.com/clients/plac...t=link12546tyr |
Re: Post Office Closures
Blimey Claytonender .. you bin doing your homework.. Ok I surrender on this point. I must just use all the ones that don't charge, and do resent ever having to use the ones that do .. which have been mainly on Motorway Service stations.
Most shops will give cash back though which doesn't entail a fee, however, Clayton Co-op have stopped doing this now as they have a machine (except when it is out of order), but, as you say, they don't charge anyway on their machine. I, myself, feel sorry for the demise of these local Post Offices, but they are losing lots of money. Have you read the Observer this week main points were:- The loss of revenue .. 8 out 10 branches were running at a loss. Each transaction costs the taxpayers £17. The loss is now running at £4 million per week. Consumer habits have changed with the introduction of on-line banking and direct debits, etc., and has drastically reduced the number of people using them. I, myself, only ever use the PO to renew my car tax, but obviously not a problem to get to one .. as I naturally have a car, but could easily obtain from the Internet now. What would you do if it were your business ? |
