looks like we are gonna get a tesco.........
Tesco Supermarket For Accrington Town Centre (from Lancashire Telegraph)
at least it will create 450 jobs:rolleyes:, feel sorry for the small businesses if it does go ahead, also asda will have competition:rolleyes:

Re: tesco

£32 million... well at least it's trebled the value of the town :D

good will save me trailing to blackburn every monday, asda has always been a last resort for me, :) hope it goes ahead.

We should make them sponsor Stanley for £4£ with what it costs to build :D

That'll be good, will do Thanks Jacky:D

Re: tesco

Personally I think its a bad idea. Accrington isn't big enough for two leading supermarkets. One of them will end up having to close due to lack of custom, aswel as the very few small stores around Accrington these days. They should bulldoze the whole town.

Re: tesco

i like going to all of the shops and supermarkets, i can get some things cheaper in some shops than i can in a supermarket, but i like the deals some supermarkets do, i dont stick to one shop or supermarket, but thats usually because there deals drag me in

Yeh me too, I work in the Burnley store hopping for an internal transfer maybe

Re: tesco

hold ya horses!!, they have only submitted the planning application, it might not get approved yet!, we will have to wait and see:D

andrewb 25-01-2008 15:28

Re: tesco

I hope it isn't approved. I want the council to focus on Accrington being a good interesting, unique marketplace, not a clone of every other chainstore town where the supermarkets have a stranglehold.

Don't most dying small towns in this area say that though. The more I walk round Accrington town centre the more I see why pound shops and charity shops are the only shops to benefit from any trade left in the town.

Re: tesco

It is not unheard of for an applicant to offer a "sweetner" to the planning authority in cases like this. I wonder what Tesco have offered HBC, new Council Offices perhaps? Or am I just being too cynical by half? This proposal will put the final nail in the coffin for Accy Market. As for the 400-odd jobs that will be created, well, you just know that the vast majority of them will go to people who live outside the borough.

cashman 26-01-2008 13:21

Re: tesco

think the final nail went in yrs ago A-B, as for the jobs, many will be part-time,no matter were anyone lives, think perhaps the bottom line is,most people would welcome it, right or wrong thats the way of it i suspect.

I personally hope it goes ahead,as i dont drive and im sick to death of blinkin Asda for many reasons :(

Re: tesco

There was an offer to buy the building where we rent our office, I believe the owner got greedy and tesco pulled out, no surprise there, (for the owner being greedy I mean), that was on Burnley rd near Altham/Clayton.

harwood red 26-01-2008 14:20

Re: tesco

Plus there will be the tesco's in Great Harwood too!! With a tesco petrol station :)

Thomas lee how can you say that Accrington isn't big enough for two big supermarkets? It's alot bigger than you think...and a competition for Asda can only be a good thing.

Look a clitheroe, they have 3 supermarkets there and that is a lot smaller town than accrington

WillowTheWhisp 26-01-2008 14:31

Re: tesco

I'm in two minds about this. We do shop at Tesco anyway, in Blackburn usually, so this won't make much difference to where we shop but it will be handy. On the other hand I do think it's a shame that every town seems to be a clone of the next one and there are fewer and fewer different and independant shops which make town centre shopping more interesting.

Re: tesco

I think it's a good move for Accrington, it creates a hell of a lot of jobs, and creates competition for Asda, probably driving prices down. As for the "poor independent businesses", forgive me for not feeling sorry for rip-off merchants. They make shed loads of money, for THEMSELVES, Tesco will make a lot of money, yeah, but it will also create jobs.

Asda and Tesco have already had a dressing down by the OFT for price fixing. I doubt that any prices will be driven down. The buggers are just more discreet in their methods of operation.

450 jobs thats a laugh, 420 of them will be part time, which means a saving to them, they will be low paid shelf fillers, trolley shifters and goods shifters in the wharehouse.

We already have Asda, Aldi, Lidl and one or two smaller chains, theres only so much money in the town, which will mean some shops will go under after 12 months, and the local council mafia will hve some excuse.

And what will happen to the tesco express at the petrol station?

Will that stay open or will it shut?

I think it will stay open as it is linked to the petrol station and its handy when you go to pay you can pick up a few bits of shopping, bit like corner shop really :D

Re: tesco

but who says they'll keep the petrol station open - they might decide to shut it and have the petrol station at the tesco

That would suit me, at least you would be able to collect clubcard points on you`re petrol, anyway i don`t for a minute think it will shut.

I think the petrol sales are independent of Tescos at the Metro store that's why you dont collect clubcard points for buying fuel there

What we really need is a good book shop, a good computer shop and a good toy shop there is nothing like this in town
and there are plenty of closed shops in town that need filling before we have another supermarket

What we really need is any good shop!!!!we went to blackburn yesterday to the jewellers near the old cinema, Valhal, is got a massive sale on as its shutting down after 32 years due to the council not renewing the lease, a lot of the shops round there are shut and it looks terrible, all down to rent rises and non renewal of leases,so it looks like blackburn council are gonna ruin the town like hyndburn council have ruined accy.

Diesel 27-01-2008 11:14

Re: tesco

Tesco Express will not close because of the petrol which is independent from the shop,Esso own the site and it will not be closing.
Besides the shop itself makes around 45-50000 pounds a week and employs around 25 people so it wouldnt make sense to close it.
It is a busy shop and the forecourt is always packed,me and my fiance know this because we have worked there ever since it opened and it has continued to grow steadily since.
And before people think no wonder we are all for the new tesco we are not looking for a transfer and are happy where we are!

We go to B/BURN Iceland. They have loads more stuff, better bargains and its a hell of a lot easier to park the car, than carry bags and bags up the arndale car park.

Tesco has a larger organic range so gets my order more often than not.

i find tesco quite expensive - although i must say some things do seem to be better quality ( or is it that they add more flavourings lol)
maybe its because i dont shop there often so i dont know what the bargains are
