i watched a programme not so long ago about firfighters in the uk, one fireman said when there is a job opening they are inundated with applications from all over the uk, there are more than enough people already needing these jobs why rule out certain people when there isnt enough jobs for the people who want them

Positive discrimination was used to elect more women candidates for Labour too. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Please read the story again. There was no question of discrimination and they are not saying that men can not apply for the fire service. They are not ruling men out from applying! All the open days were, were marketed at minority groups to encourage them to apply as well as white men.

the point i was gonna make gayle. people's reactions are as if they've said no they cant join - its just more awareness in those communities

the army used to hold a few these with us in school i rmemeber gettin all the asians together and giving them talks...

Marketing something to different demographics is an age old technique to sell more things. They are NOT excluding white men from joining the fire service they are simply trying to market it to women and ethnic minorities.

All positive discrimination is wrong, in my opinion.

There is inevitabely always a backlash when it is practised.

Since careers advice, education and training in this country is quite rightly open to everyone, regardless of colour, creed, or gender, there really is no need for this sort of initiative.

It's patronising, and counterproductive.

Perhaps the majority of people who are being targeted, just don't fancy working for the fire service.

It sounds discriminatory but I understand what you mean Gayle. What they are doing is aiming the awareness at people who may not otherwise have taken an interest but when it comes down to filling the jobs surely what matters is who is best suited to the task, not the colour of their skin, where their granny was born or whether they are male or female.

It was Avon fire service that last year were reprimanded by the courts for shining their torches on 'doggers', whilst supposedly on duty.:D

As it happens, I completely agree with you. I also think that the Daily Express has done an exceptional job of scaremongering again - 'white men are so downtrodden, they're being pushed out their own country, women and ethnic minorities will be taking over'.

Absolutely agree with you Willow - the right person should get the job.

I disagree with discrimination and positive discrimination - I would (and have) objected to women only lists etc.

It’s nowt new, the Police were at this caper in 2006, maybe it’s the pressures laid down by government to get more women and ethnic workers in public service. Discrimination against the white populous is not the way to go foreword. Where is this pressure coming from ? Is it perceived, is it from Government, from an expectancy of society, Europe ? I ask because I don’t know.

I remember years back some fire departments had this politically correct situation. they were "encouraged" to hire more women. They even made them relax some of the more "mundane" physical tests i.e.:

Every fireman had to be able to carry a 150 pound person down a ladder. Since many of the lady recruits were not physically able to do this, they were allowed to take 2 runs at it. each time they proved themselves by carrying 75 lbs down the ladder.

Which is fine if they cut the normal fire victim in half eh? LOL To try to explain why this was okay: If there is a need to carry someone down a ladder, one of the guys can do it!

In my opinion, there are just some professions that should be off limits to this kind of radical politcal correctness.

Any form of discrimination is frowned upon by most of us, racism, sexism, ageism…but to employ someone who is physically unable to carry out a prime role in a job, is sheer stupidity.

Similar situation here with the local police , ethnic recruits are exempt from having to complete a swimming test to qualify for the training academy .....it may have something to do with buoyancy ;)

the government lay the guidelines down and the fireservice just like the police have to take on so many ethnic minoritys per year, otherwise they come across as racist, which is totally wrong regardles of colour, sex, age etc if you are the best person for the job its yours, or thats how it should be.

I bet the fire service is an Equal Opportunities Employer - in which case they should also be employing a quota of disabled people!
Do we care who carries us down the ladder if our house is burning - I don't as long as he is big, male and can speak english....................!
