Is this a sign of the times

Brits think Churchill did not exist, and that Sherlock Holmes actually lived in Baker street

When a poll of school children were asked ,who " is/was" Churchill ,,most of them thought it was the dog in the comercial....

How old were the school kids?

Thats the daft thing about history for most kids, they are taught ancient stuff and very little if any 20th century history.

This is really bad.IMO Neil is right about the history being taught is mostly ancient history, and i think parents should step in a little bit too-nothing wrong in us looking up things to teach our children.Jack will certainly be taught a little at home by me,my partner and his dad who is becoming a secondary school teacher in September.
I knew Charles Dickens was real and not fiction when i was younger because my Grandfather took me to the Dickens centre in Rochester (Dickens lived in Kent as a boy),and he also took me to the house Dickens visited where he wrote most of Pickwick papers.......Jack will also be visiting these places, along with many other museums and gallerys to learn things-even if he doesn't WANT to learn, the oppurtunity will be there for him.

Re: Is this a sign of the times

When I was at primary school NO history was taught.
History lessons began at secondary school and started with prehistoric man, and 5 years later got as far as Queen Victoria.

I knew who Churchill was .... he happened to be prime minister at the time :D

PS it is logical to start at the beginning of known history and progress, giving a clear impression of a timeline

Good point there Cashy-although not being funny if this was posted on a southern forum no-one would have thought of that cos the majority in schools are british kids.....from my experience.

My granddaughter, who is 8, is studying WW2 in History at school. Two weeks ago her class went to a WW2 museum in Stockport where there is a classic air-raid shelter. The children had to dress as evacuees and carried gas-mask cases (Laura's was a cut-down shoe box covered with brown paper and a string threaded). The kids all know Churchill was Prime Minister and George VI was king. They know a little about Nazi Germany, they know who Hitler was and they also know about bombing, rationing and the Blackout.

When I was at Primary School the History I learned about was the Romans and the Tudors. At Grammar School it was back to the Romans again then, for O level, 1794 to 1914. When Laura's mum started at High School her first History was - the Falklands War and it had only been over about 4 years!

When I was at school, from the third form onwards, you had to choose between History or geography, I didn't like the history teacher:D now who was this fellow Churchill again:D:D

Looks like most people missed the Plantagenets
Thats what happens when history is put out of sequence

Even more shocking, some Britons actually think that the UK is an independent country!
