We've got about 6 frying pans in our house. We all bought pan sets before we came to uni instead of conferring with eachother. Should see the pile of washing up!

Isn't it cheaper to just make the mix from scratch? How man pancakes do you get (on average) out of those bottles of mixture?

Re: Pancake Tuesday
For all you useless *******;)(get it?), who dont know how to make pancakes:D
4oz plain flour, sifted pinch of salt 2 eggs 7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water 2oz butter To serve: caster sugar lemon juice Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets a airing. Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then begin whisking the eggs - any sort of whisk or even a fork will do - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking (don't worry about any lumps as they will eventually disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl anduse it to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake. Now get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you're using the correct amount of batter. I find 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm/7in pan. It's also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it's tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate. Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest. To serve, spinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon. now theres no excuse;) |

You are supposed to be using up your eggs, flour, oil etc in readiness for Lent as you will not be eating anything like that for a while. You shouldn't be having to buy things in in order to make pancakes. Does anyone on here make pancakes for the original reason and give up cakes etc for Lent? |

Re: Pancake Tuesday
I never weigh the ingredients when I make pancake batter - it's all done by Eye. :) As I make them quite often, I'm not sure if we'll have them tomorrow. Depends how I feel.
I like lemon and sugar on mine, sometimes maple syrup. My husband would only have his with strawberry jam and our Laura insists on chocolate sauce. What's your choice of filling? |

You have to get the lemon juice quantity just right to avoid sogginess. It can be done, with practise. The best way to eat pancakes, well crêpes, is to lightly flambeau the surface with brandy and serve with ice cream and Baileys. :drunk: |

Re: Pancake Tuesday
I usually buy the ready made mix in a packet, reason is that they turn out better than the home made ones, its too hard to get the mixture just right so the pancakes are not too watery, my kids end up walking out of the kitchen because it takes too long then i end up going to the shop to buy them readymade, i do enjoy pancakes with lemon and sugar but they have to be eaten as soon as youve made them otherwise they taste like cold soggy yorkshire puds

Never much fun for Mum, is it. Don't like sweet wine, will have to be a dry white I think .. can't see a red sitting very well with it. Maybe Rose a compromise... oh well, will just have to try all three to see which is best I suppose. |
Re: Pancake Tuesday
well asked my kids this morning if they want pancakes today, and their answer was ...NOOOOOOO!, ah well saves me getting the flour etc.. then:D

Re: Pancake Tuesday
We had our pancake day yesterday due to the kids being out tonight. Every Monday we have a Family Night (It's a Mormon thing known as Family Home Evening) so this week we called it 'Family home Pancake Monday' :D
Word of warning to anyone who has never used one of those shaker bottles before and is planning on doing so this year - you really need to shake very vigorously. We used two of them for the first time and have decided never again. We got stuck lumpy bottoms. |
