I love spiders but my housemate would have a fit if he saw them. I make a habit of throwing the spiders I find at him.

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

They can get really big cant they ?
i remember once searching for something that was big enough to put over one yet light enough to pick up once i had slid some paper underneath it ( and something that wouldnt break lol once i threw it outisde)

we have a corner like that behind our sofa - and they climb behind the cushions then just when your bogg-eyed watchin tv you see a shadow movin by your head - and then you let out that really stupid scream that you couldnt do again if you tried :D

Lilly 04-02-2008 21:46

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

Blimey, they're a couple of big 'uns.

blazey 04-02-2008 21:49

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

I just pick em up with my hands. Easier to move around that way.

keetah992000 04-02-2008 21:53

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

ewww - its not the spiders that fr5ighten me its that they make me jump when they suddenly set off- my god daughter was petrified by one of these once - it kept jumping towards her - you can imagine the scene the girl her mum and me all letting out those horrific involuntary screams as we tried to catch it - oh dear i think i need help :D

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

I don't know what it is about spiders that I hate, but I do!
Scream, freeze, run a mile
Until the kids are near 1!
Then I'm ok and it's not like I'm frightened of them anymore
Quite wierd really

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

there a bit hard to catch there on that corner (ive tried, the blighters are just too darned quick!)

Think one is a female and one is a male cos they're both differnt colours (although thats the limit of my spider knowledge)

Dont normally mind them, the other half hates them, but as long as they keep out of the way and eat all the nasties that may get in the beams or behind the walls then they can stay there for me (as long as the Mrs doesnt see them, then they get hoovered up!)

Just thought id share that - never seen two huge ones together!!

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

I dont mind spiders - I usually pick them up and throw them out - slugs are worse *shudder*

WillowTheWhisp 04-02-2008 22:32

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

Spiders are OK. They eat all the other nasty things you could have if you didn't have spiders.

MikeSz 04-02-2008 22:33

I had a beauty living under my sink last year, she was massive and I named her Aragog. Unfortunately, I accidentally sucked her up the dyson when she was out for a stroll..:( I miss Aragog, she kept lots of other nasties at bay (she must have done..... you don't get that big without eating)..

ah i love 'ickle piders', they have never bothered me, Reece or i usually just leave them alone afterall they are doing no harm....i know a certain male accywebber who is absolutely petrified of them (snigger snigger)

jackyalex 05-02-2008 08:32

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

eww they are huge, have you found a web yet ? it must be huge, or do they not make webs when they are that big, should be quick enough to catch anything in passing hehe, i dont mind small spiders but not big ones, think its because my little brother had a tarantula as a kid i swear this spider was as big as my hand that was enough to spook me

Don't know what it is but I can't stand the little blitters, my Dad was the same, and my eldest Daughter takes after me. Last year I had a little poblem with ants, got one of those electrical gadgets, got rid of the ants and haven't seen a spider either, money well spent

I have seen them on the bid channels, just didnt know if they actually did what they said. have they got rid of all insects and are they any good if you have pets (dog + fish)

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

We uncovered the mother of all "house" spiders a few years ago taking down an old shed - it must have been older than the shed, it was a freak of nature. My Grandad, bless him, just picked it up without any fear whatsoever and tossed it into the nearby flower bed. Meanwhile, every other member of the house was halfway down the road...

These ones dont seem to have made a web - there is a kinda entrance web (which is what they're sat on) but nothing else. The one on the left is the only one that 'lives' in there - the other one must have popped round for a brew!

just get one of those humane catchers so that you can release them when you catch them

oh you could end up with a few hundred baby spiders in there, i think your mrs will be packed and gone if she wakes up to see a wall full of them lol, keep your eye out for a nest of eggs, unless you dont mind them

MikeSz 05-02-2008 09:04

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

That had occured to me - spiders not being the most social of animals (especially with each other!) I thought I might try to catch it and then give it a good vacuuming (then im going to fill that gap in!)

Like Jaysay I have got a plug in repeller.
It works against rodents and crawling insects.
Does no harm to cats and dogs but will give your hamster a nervous breakdown

Before you evict them could you please pass on the sad news that their second cousin Horace died early this morning in a freak cardboard/catalogue recycling incident! :D

oh god them spiders are just like the ones I had in my old house!!
my son was only a baby and was lying on his mat playing , when suddenley one of those hugh things came running out from the side of the couch and running towards him:eek:, the only thing to do was to squash it:(, ......oohhh it was horrible, white gunk was oozing out...ewwwww....lol...funny thing where 10 minutes later another came out, but i mangaged to get rid of that by putting in the garden;)

my daughter is petrified of them, she just panicks and goes into a cold sweat, one time she nearly fainted!!, not nice at all:(

MikeSz 05-02-2008 10:59

Re: and now time for something a little different...(warning - shoking image!)

Mrs has a very similar recation - goes cold, white, and half a bottle of port is then required to relieve the stress!!

If you want to see a spider worthy of the name try this one:
http://arachnophiliac.info/burrow/gallery/tarantulas/images/pterinochilus_murinus_1.jpg

You don’t get any idea of its size from the picture but I can assure that it could straddle your hand. Called a Baboon Spider it is not poisonous to humans, well not really. But the bite can be quite painful. I came across these critters in Capetown where they also had king sized cockroaches. How about a cockroach some 4 inches long and tough enough so that you could stand on one and not kill it.

And you can buy them as pets but they are really agressive. I dont know why anyone would want one but sometimes I wonder if I should buy my mum one for her birthday...

You wouldnt sleep for a week if you found one of those on your wall! And you certainly wouldnt be able to use the tried and tested pint glass + beer mat method for catching it!

Im alright with the idea of them on my wall - thats cool. The idea of eating them is however a little unsettling...

Having said that, check out this pic I found on wikipedia - fried spiders! spiders, chips and tomato ketchup anyone?

You have to imagine one of them sat on your plate, big black juicy spider, one leg still twitching - and then putting your fork through the middle of it.....
