I hate townies. I don't think there is as many in Accy as there are where I live. Trust me.

i dont agree, i used to live in Sittingbourne in Kent and it was swarmed with them...hardly any goths or moshers about (except me and a few others).the only difference is u call them towneys and we called them chavvys.
i see far more goths and moshers now compared with townies than anywhere except Canterbury where i was a student and was with my 'own people'.chavs didnt get a look in there:)
but i find the towneys round here dont cause half as much trouble up north from what i have seen.police put curfews up in the estate near where i lived because the crime rates where so high.....due to chavs might i add.i suppose it was because there was so many more of them.i dont find the chavvys up here half the threat i did down south, they just get on with things whereas it was well known down there that a real war was on between the different groups of people .but you imagine the tension in my house because i was 16 and a mosher and my brother was 15 and a 'towney'.......................oh dear.need i say more?

Well I am middle aged and a bit.... I not only know what one is but I was one in Preston when I was a teenager.. yeagh thats what they called us way back then. It aint a new term even if the young uns fink it is..

As for expaining what one is... too embaressed now I admitted to being one:)

Goths are devil-worshipers who wear makeup and black cloths and stuff. Moshers are skaters who wear baggy jeans and hoodies and like rock/metal music. Townies are scum who wear tracksuits and think they're rock hard and get stoned every night. They also listen to rave music and stuff.

Please Super - could you possibly explain why Townies are scum? And are you suggesting that there is devil worship in Accrington by these Goth Characters? They don't appear to be charming fellows.

Maybe times have changed, when I was a kid( and I know all the jokes, Pontius wasnt even a Pilot, Bodercia hadnt passed her driving test) Townies were Gypos who lived in Huncoat or Fern Gore, but never in Accy only Greasers and about 7 mods with scooters.

Goths are not necessarily devil-worshippers.....of course some of them consider themselves to be satanic but at the end of the day FROM MY KNOWLEDGE AND IN MY OPINION hardly any of them do any real worshipping and cant answer any questions of the real 'religion' of satanism. Some of claim to be wiccans yet cannot answer questions on magic that i have asked them,some dress like it because of the music they listen to EG marylyn manson or cradle of filth, some because it makes them feel different and feel society doesnt let them be who they want therefor go for alternative but it has ended up there being so many of them they are not a minority any more.

I'm 43 and i remember the skin heads and mods, think it would have been around mid 70s. The skin heads were really intimidating.

I hate them so much because:

The way they always think that theyre soooooo awesomely good in fights...
The way they call skaters and moshers goths...
The way they think that their Rockfords :D make them look hard...
Oh and as the name that i call them "Pants in socks crew" is soooo true, Yeah lets go and tuck our pants into our socks... which prat thought of that?

It just annoys me.

Yep - I was wondering when someone would mention that! You have to wear trackie bottoms - with the socks over the top, you can wear very expensive trainers, but no true Townie would be seen without their Rockports! Also, designer jumper - preferably with lots of stripes. Why anyone would wear boots with sportswear is what gets me the most annoyed.

I also saw a townie in the heat of the summer (yeah we did have one) with gloves on (???) He probably wouldn't be seen dead in gloves in winter!

Am as baffled as the rest of us "oldies" as to what the bleeding hell this thread is about....purpose? Value? Thought I was fairly modern in my outlook,pigeonholing people because of what they wear seems a little bit non pc!!!Used to be a rocker myself,now more at home with Beautiful South and Foo Fighters;whet does that make me?? :confused:

I'm a bit befuddled too as to where I fit in. I will listen to practically anything and have music at home from old classics, swinging sixties, 70's, 80's up until present day. Suppose I did veer a bit towards Goth when I was a teenager but I still listened to very varied music..

It isn't really just about what they wear - it's a whole attitude thing. I could wear trackies & a posh jumper but that wouldn't make me a townie. (cos I actually have a job!)

I'm with you Lindsay,this thread has me compleatly baffled. I had never heard of Townies or Moshers till I saw an article in the Telegraph some time back.
I am round about Kipax's age and come from the same area in Preston and I never came across no Townies.
We had Hells Angels,Teddy boys and Girls, Rockabilly's, Greasers, Mods&Rockers,then the Skinheads came into the picture.
This was all when I was at school.
The eighties brought the strange punk brigade.
The Goths well I think like the punks they just want to be different and do there own thing.
Some are into Vimpirism and the Satanic thing. But why should they be able to answer questions about Wicca?
Wiccans dont even believe in Satan.

What do these townies do that is so bad. Surley they cant all be a bad lot.

I don't believe that people do exactly the same things as people the other side of the country. Everyone around where I live (North-East coast) tuck their trousers into their socks and wear burberry hats. Losers. Do they think it makes them look hard.

This thread started because someone was airing their view :)
It is prejudice but at the same time if chavs didnt want to be known as chavs (or towneys,etc) they would pull their pants outa their socks, take off their burberry caps and settle for 'no-name' boots instead of forking out over a hundred quid for some just for the name.
i dont mind these people but i dont admire their attitude, obviously not all of them are like this but i must say it is the majority of chavs that just dont care for anything except fights, speaking in a vulgar manner and keeping companys like rockport going,(generally not caring for anyone else), and it sux.

Well theres an educational subject, I thought for a dreadful moment I was a townie but I don't get stoned every night so that is my excuse for being one. My pal Julie is a Goth but I didn't know she was a devil worshipper. The mods and rockerss in the early 60s were enough for me!
