Guess it's all relevant to the Status Quo though .. we only look at our Council ... maybe we are good to all the others which may be crap ... :D

You could be right there, we never hear about any other councils but our own so we wouldn't know. It would seem that there are a lot of them who aren't as good as ours.

Does this sound like window dressing, or am I just being too cynical for my own good?

Front line council staff (good god, anyone would think we were at war!) may be cock-a-hoop about their increased performance, but, sadly, looked at from the perspective of one who deals with them on a weekly basis, I see very little change either for the good or the worse. Certainly there is an awfull lot of advertising their competence and determination but that does not really translate very well into action. While it is true that we no longer seem to be lurching from cock-up to catastophe on a daily basis, there are still basic improvements to be made to bring the town back up to the standard we enjoyed until the mid-sixties.

Its the Audit Commison who look into all apect of local councils and they set the standards. They are not influenced by Central Government and all councils are rated by the same yardstick.

Re: Hyndburn Council 'Excellent'

Rossendale Borough Council - ‘Good’ for Rossendale Council

Rossendale council only rated a good mind you 5 years ago we were one of the worst councils in england mind you we lost our leader of the council just before christmas, (he resigned as leader of the council and became an independent). So Hyndburn is better than rossendale.

By the way the worst council i heard is Liverpool this year.

And when we lost £1.8m we were rated good (4 out of 5). We have moved up one.

Oh that explains it! I'd forgotten until reading this. I was going into town on Tuesday and noticed a bunch of people, a bin wagon and a bottle of bubbly outside Scaitcliffe house. I was going to ask on here if anyone knew what it was all about - but I forgot.

Re: Hyndburn Council 'Excellent'

this is ridiculous - they obviously only look at the surface

i have just had my council tax given over to baliffs - was it becasue i havent paid it -no
-it was because twice i have paid it a few days late (once due to the bank making an error and taking a mortgage payment twice thus not enough money to cover the direct debit and the other time was when i was changing my bank account and had to pay online due to direct debit not being set up) the payment were made literally within the week they were due but apparently the rules are if you dont pay on the date you are due to pay you have broken the agreement.( nevermind circumstances beyond your control)
this month i have had an error made with my wage and had to wait for an emergency payment to come through before i could pay it so again - eventhough i have paid it - they say that they cant retrieve it from the baliffs and absolutely refused to ring my place of employment to verify that a mistake had been made in my wage.
bloody ridiculous -

perhaps my standards are too high- maybe this kind of thing is what has won the award of excellence for hyndburn council - god help us !!
