New Lady Mayoress
For the coming year is Sue Johnson ! She will the Mayoress to Pam Barton. I am really thrilled for Sue, she is a fantastic lady, she runs the Peel Park pub and has raised thousands for charities for years ,esp MacMillan. She is also on the governors at Peel Park. She will be a real asset to the town. Wonderful news!
Congratulations Sue from Lindsay and Kelsey.:alright::wave8: |

Re: New Lady Mayoress
Pam Barton is going to be the Mayor and as she is a widow she has chosen Sue, her friend of 30 years to be her "consort" so to speak.

Thanks for that, it sort of makes sense. I personally don't see the point in having a Mayor. They appear to be an unneeded expense to the Borough. Maybe someone can explain what a Mayor does that is worth spending the money to have one. |
Re: New Lady Mayoress
Will PB be mayor next year?

Re: New Lady Mayoress
I think that it's mainly civic duties but I know when my Uncle was Mayor he did a great deal of fund raising too. The Mayor is supposed to represent the Borough at functions etc. I know it's a full time job so to speak and my Uncle was worn out at the end of his term. Very enjoyable though and a real honour I would think.

Re: New Lady Mayoress
I'm sure it is a great honour to be Mayor but despite what i have read i still can't see what a Mayor brings to the borough, especially nowadays.
Anybody can be a fundraiser,i'm not knocking the charitable work done but i can't see how that justifies the expense. |

Re: New Lady Mayoress
Who says though the Mayor has to be male.
When the mayor is female the mayoress is known as the mayors consort. |
Re: New Lady Mayoress
Sorry but 'ess' means female so to call a bloke the mayoress would be as stupid as calling you Mr

Re: New Lady Mayoress
If you read my post - i said he was known as the mayors consort

Cambridge gets transsexual mayor, partner - Europe - MSNBC.com As for Hyndburn, it isn't the first time we've had a female Mayor and consort, and I doubt it will be the last. Good luck to them both. |

Yes i know jaysay - if you look above 4 posts you will see i said when the mayor is female the mayoress is known as the mayors consort. It was just the way Neil was going on - seeing as we dont bother when we have a female mayor - we must be more forward thinking on this side of the hill!!! :D:D:D |
Re: New Lady Mayoress
If an elected Mayor/Mayoress is unmarried are they just allowed to choose a friend to be their consort? Are there any requirements that this friend would have to meet?
|
Re: New Lady Mayoress
Yes thats the case Lily they pick a friend or relative to be their mayoress or consort. I think the person has to be able to follow the same conditions as being a councillor.

I know that Sue is giving up running the pub for the year to concentrate on her duties and she is really looking forward to the role.

Re: New Lady Mayoress
I know a few people who took on the role of mayor and mayoress and its a hard job no wonder she's giving up running the pub for a year.

sory i just dont see how ? |
Re: New Lady Mayoress
The Office of Mayor was brought to this country by the Normans who also brought the Doomsday Book and the Feudal System.
The word "Mayor" is derived from the Latin "magnus" meaning great or powerful. The first Mayoral town was Thetford in 1199. The early Mayor was re-elected for several years and was the town's magistrate; he often had only the previous Mayor to assist him. His powers included the power to arrest those disturbing the peace, he presided over the civil and criminal courts and he had power to regulate the size of loaves of bread. By 17th century additional powers followed such as Chairman of the Council, Chief Magistrate, Borough Coroner and keeper of the Borough jail. By the 19th century it was suggested that the Mayor had three roles Constitutional Monarch for the City Speaker for the Council Prime Minister His term of office at this time was between 2-4 years and the Mayor would attend all Committees and as a result held the whole Council together to co-ordinate and integrate its activities. I got the above from rossendale borough council - seems hyndburn doesnt have a bit that tells the history of the mayoralty. Anyway the mayor represents the council of hyndburn/rossendale/blackburn etc around the country not just in hyndburn/rossendale/blackburn etc. Also if a vote is tied in full council the mayor has the deciding vote. The Mayor in Rossendale normally has at least 2 years of being a councillor to run - as they are normally deputy mayor first for a year and then mayor the following year. It also is supposed to be labour one year conservative the next (this will change liberal democrats have 2 new councillors) - in otherwords apolitical. Last year our Deputy Mayor was Peter Gill who died in September 3 months into being the deputy mayor, his wife (who is a councillor as well) took the deputy mayorship over and their daughters have took over the deputy mayoress role. Hope this helps |
