How Does Your Garden Grow?
2 Attachment(s)
Last autumn I planned out my back garden and today I have started to see the fruits of my labours. Well my grandson’s actually.
Right in the centre there are some 40 daffodils in a tight circle surrounded by bunches of 5 different coloured crocuses and these are surrounded by a ring of some 200 snow drops. Sadly only about 50 snowdrops poked their heads up so that sort of ruined the display a bit. Over in the back right hand corner my personal bluebell wood is showing signs of life with a bunch of foreign bluebells at the apex of a triangle and over 100 bluebells filling up the remainder. Alongside the back fence my grandson transplanted some orange flowers from the front and these too are showing signs of life. The idea is that in about a month or so I will sow some red poppy seeds to form a “V” around the central display to make my own Remembrance Garden. Alongside the fence on the left the Foxgloves have survived but I don’t think that the Hollyhocks and Lupins have managed to. But you never know there may be something underground just waiting for the warmer weather. I’ll have to re-sow them in April if not. The rest of the garden will be sown with meadow flowers come April and the perimeter will sport things like the yellow poppy and antirrhinums. Hopefully it will become birds and bees paradise. Now if only I could get “Stumpy” to sit still for a second. Who’s “Stumpy”? He or she is a squirrel with the left front leg either missing or not fully grown. It doesn’t stop it from scrambling up and down the face of the fences and trees though. |

thats quite alot of bulbs to grow in such a small space.. Sadly only about 50 snowdrops poked their heads up so that sort of ruined the display a bit. could be because they were planted too close together? Over in the back right hand corner my personal bluebell wood is showing signs of life with a bunch of foreign bluebells at the apex of a triangle and over 100 bluebells filling up the remainder. I hope you dont live near the countryside or near public parks as its not advised to plant foreign bluebells in the uk cos they are a more vigorous plant than our english one which is slowly dying out due to the foreign being more aggresive and more of a hybrid.. Alongside the fence on the left the Foxgloves have survived but I don’t think that the Hollyhocks and Lupins have managed to. But you never know there may be something underground just waiting for the warmer weather. I’ll have to re-sow them in April if not. your hollyhocks may have gotten rust? thus bumping them off...or your soil wasnt quite correct.. The rest of the garden will be sown with meadow flowers come April and the perimeter will sport things like the yellow poppy and antirrhinums. snapdragons are ace and you cant have enough of them in a garden.. I will try and dig out some snaps of my back yard.. |
Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
some pics of my back yard...
every single bit of that yard re-done - it was a challenge for me to see what i could do with a square empty yard.. so I took up all the old flags (was fed up having them pinched, completely dug out by me, laid an 8 inch base for my new flags - which was done by me, all borders built up, filled, planted and maintained by me...took me 2 weeks in the sun and rain which is why it may look slightly rough but all done and I love it.. those pics were taken last year - regardless of what the date says:rolleyes:.. I would love a big garden like jambuttys, I have too many ideas in my head when it comes to gardening, and after doing mine I still think about taking some bits up and changing them... I reckon I could give any small gardening firm a run for their money if I were to go down that road.. I have customers, the contacts and the experience...but they dont need to worry just yet...one day though..;) http://i30.tinypic.com/16l086x.jpg http://i31.tinypic.com/4igcya.jpg http://i26.tinypic.com/6i756u.jpg |

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
I think Jambutty's garden shows a lot of promise. It can take quite some time to get things the way you want them, especially if you have to rely on someone else for the heavy labour. He did say, after all, that there are other things to be planted. As a keen gardener myself I'd be preparing the grassy bit for reseeding next month to really show off the flowers.

JB your garden is lovely, I agree with Glasgow guy about planting the bulbs a bit too close together, so the roots are going to all be fighting for the moisture, which judging by the look of the earth, is not plentiful. I think it's promising though, so I hope you'll get the rest planted and we can see more pictures :) our garden is rubbish compared to yours :D |

Hi Jambutty.
Never mind the critics, you should have seen our garden when we got it, we filled three 6 ton skips with rubbish before we could even start to grow any thing. Just dig in plenty of compost in the flower beds before planting. Poppies be careful they are very invasive and can soon take over. Snow drops can be critical as to the depth they are planted. Just remember plants like human beings require food. We have 3 big compost bins going full time. Retlaw |

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
I laughed till i cried at all the answers on here.
Aleks leave Jen alone :hitting8: and stop being nasty to jambuttys grandson. Wish I had a green house like that, crime that its full of tools. I've only got the two 6*6 roofs and a 4 7metre lawn borders, I do try to do them, but watering them's a struggle. I'm going to try to fit automatic sprinklers this year. The spider plants are taking over one border I didn't think spider plants were hardy but they come back every year bigger than before. My cordyline is the same, and is now pot bound and several feet tall, I plan to replace that this year Going to try to get my spot lights done too, although if I buy a new one it won't be big enough to light up. The back garden roof is the nicest, I've got a little water feature on there, the water echos through the landing when the windows open in summer. This ones all lit at night, one shines on the water and throws rippling reflections on the wall. Councill don't like it though, Miseries keep writing to me accusing of breaking the windows when I climb out. Ahh thoughts of summer days of planting out, then reaping the rewards drinkin a nice cold beer. Lets hope we have a nice summer this year. |
Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
My very limited gardening experience, glasgow guy, has taught me that bulb flowers are never at their best in the first year of planting. With snowdrops being planted close to the surface they were prone to attack from marauding creatures like a three legged squirrel, field mice and cats. It will look better next year.
What is laughingly described as soil in my back garden could well be the reason why the hollyhocks died off. Although each plant was enclosed in its own biodegradable pot filled with proper compost so they did get a good start. I think that you have done a good job with what is after all a back yard. |

As you can see from the photo below my back garden is raised above the building floor level and as near as I can gather half the depth is a mixture of rubble and what laughingly passes for soil. The top half isn’t too bad though although it was ‘root bound’ with grass roots after lying fallow for at least 6 years that I know of. I’m looking for a controlled wilderness instead of a lawn because it would need mowing, so the whole garden is a flowerbed as I have already described. Come March some time, whatever grasses are showing will be nuked with Weedol, and a week or so later my personal slave will spread a few hundred litres of general compost around so that the seeds will have a good start. After that it is up to nature to do its stuff, although I will help out with anti-slug stuff and a general fertiliser. By Veterans Day on the 27th June 2008 the poppies should be in bloom so my personal Remembrance Garden will become a symbol for those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live in a free world. Not just the armed forces but also the hundreds of thousands of civilians. The flowers in the centre will have died back by then and they will represent the fallen. The red poppies will be symbolic of remembering the fallen of the European war and the yellow poppies for the Far East war. The wild meadow flowers will be symbolic of the aftermath as life sprung from the ruins of war. The cultivated flowers will represent progress since then. It would be a nice gesture if other people set aside a small patch to grow the red poppy. Just a yard square would be enough. |

Nice to see another side of you Jambutty :D
I don't have the luxury of a garden at University, however I have just got some Lithops aka 'living stones'. They're small right now but by May they should have grown a new shell I believe. http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/a...1&d=1203861914 I've also got some carnivore plants on the way! Various types, but the most obvious being venus fly trap. :D http://www.littleshopofhorrors.co.uk...roductid=17167 |
Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
Quote:
“Living stone plants (Lithops species) are native to South Africa, where they grow among rocks or soil the same color as their two succulent leaves. Lithops are succulents (meaning they store water in their fleshy leaves) but are not related to cacti. Living stones are small plants, often only 1/2" to 1" in diameter. From Fall to Spring, the plants need NO WATER at all. And very little water is needed in the Summer. Too much water can kill the plants. Yellow or white flowers appear towards the end of the growing season. Generally grown as houseplants. The tiny seeds usually germinate in just 3 to 14 days.” At $3.84 for a packet of 100 seeds it seems like good value. I notice that you appear to be growing candles. Very exotic! Donkeys years ago I had what I knew as the “Humble Tumble Plant”. If you touched a leaf near the top it would fold and sag and in doing so would touch another leaf which in turn it would ……. much to the amusement of the kids. After a few hours it would recover ready to tumble again. |
Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
Well I am sure I have posted about it before, but my garden is still a mess! a mate brought his mini digger last august, and we cleared the front down to 12 inches, it has rained since then every week, (last august), the first rain, immediately after digging, was for about 5 weeks, I am going to have a block paved driveway to the front and side eventually, in the meantime I will put up with the paddling pool, or mud (dependent on last rainfall), then I can start the back garden. I too think Aleks was a bit harsh, mostly because it was jambutty's grandson who did the hard work, we know your love for jb Aleks, but you shouldn't take it out on kids, that's just not nice.
|
Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
Just an observation, JB. If there's going to be no lawn it might be an idea to put a couple of pathways across (paving stones, gravel or even bark chippings) so you can get to different parts without treading on plants. You may want to pull out things like thistles and nettles which may come up with the other stuff. On the other hand - if you don't mind them - thistles get lovely purple flowers and nettles attract butterflies (don't ask me which ones).

I want one of the tumbler plants, but I think I'll have to wait until I get a house next year. The uni accommodation doesn't really have enough room near light to cope with more plants. :( The little water thing is rather good, means I won't kill it if I forget to water it ;) Apparently they're incredibly good at absorbing water, because of the hot African climate. This must be why they die if you water them too much! |

Thanks for the reminder but I had pondered the problem of getting around my garden without crushing seedlings. I considered learning the art of levitation so that I could float around. Nah! That’s just silly! The other alternative would be to install a Breecher’s Buoy from corner to corner but that wouldn’t be very practical. The thought struck me that maybe I could train “Stumpy” the squirrel to do the odd foray around tidying up. I would pay it handsomely. Sadly “Stumpy” is no more. The squirrel that I saw this morning had two fully formed front legs (or should that be paws?) and it seemed to be a bit larger than “Stumpy”. Was it Mr or Mrs “Stumpy” or maybe son or daughter of “Stumpy”? Or was it an interloper? Who knows? But it had a dig around for a while, found something and scampered off up the fence, launched itself into space, landed nimbly on the trunk of a nearby tree and disappeared in the branches above, taking its spoils with it. Note to self – must get some peanuts in their shells so that one day I can take a picture of it. Thinks! Stretch rope across the garden and dangle the peanuts from it, sit back and wait for the squirrel to display its foraging talents. But back to pathways. I think that I will let nature decide where I will be able to walk. There are bound to be bare patches that could be turned into a path. Otherwise the plan was to allow a path to develop either side of the “V”. |

Yup, about time over here to start ordering vegtable seeds and planting my cole crops indoors. My vegtable garden (~40 feet by 70 feet) needs to be tilled. Just have to fix a broken belt on it and I'll be ready to go.
Thankfully our lawn and fruit trees remain dormant. Just finished the last of the pruning and spreading compost over the lot of 'em. My garlic beds look nice and the asparagus is starting to come through. Brian |

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?
The snowdrops and crocuses in my front garden are almost finished. Daffodils are opening and tulips are showing buds. The dwarf lilac tree is coming into leaf as are the rose bushes.
In the back garden the camellia has dozens of buds that look like they'll be open soon and all the other shrubs are budding. The Forsythia will soon be covered in yellow flowers and even the rhubarb is showing a tiny bit of crown (must put a bucket over it). Unfortunately - the lawn needs mowing. |

Someone other than that obnoxious toe rag Aleks might just be interested to see how my garden is progressing. So here’s a picture of my bluebell corner.
Most of the English bluebells have come up and flowered. The first year after planting is never too good but next year it should look better. Once they have finished flowering and died back a bit I will thin them out and increase the area. The foxgloves are looking more like Triffids day by day and one of the hollyhocks has survived and has started to grow up. My sowing of the red poppy seeds wasn’t quite as distributive as I thought but nonetheless they too are showing signs of productive life even if they will be in myriads of clumps of them. Unfortunately and in spite of nuking every blade of grass that came up, more has sprouted so I’m going to have to trim it back to ground level to give the seedlings a chance. That’s going to be tricky. Overall it has been a worthwhile exercise and there are good signs that come the summer I will have achieved my objective, or at least most of it. |

Well done, the bluebells look great. Do they have a good scent? Unfortunately the Spanish ones don't. I am still always digging them out but I'll never entirely get rid of them so I'm compromising and encouraging the white ones and the pink ones which are very attractive. I do love English bluebells though.

I just gave him general directions on what to do but not how to do it. My major contribution was ensuring the regular supply of brews when and as needed. Oh! Yes! I scattered the anti-slug pellets and once there was signs of life the plant food pellets. Now if only I can get that pesky squirrel to sit still for a few seconds and smile at the camera but he’s so edgy and quick that so far I have loads of shots of where he has been. Although I do have a blurry tail just on the edge as he scarpered along the back fence. But I’ll get a decent snap one of these days. |

An update on my garden.
The Foxgloves are now coming to the end of their display yet still the bees swoop down in squadrons, although I believe that the correct collective noun for bees is “grist”. A squadron of bees. A grist of bees. Squadron sounds much better. The last few weeks have been rather wet and not so warm but none-the-less the poppy seeds germinated and produced a proliferation of foliage and hundreds of buds interspersed with meadow flowers. The last few warmer days encouraged the buds to open and show bright red flowers. Not too many for now but there are squillions of buds ready to colour my garden red. |

With the wet weather there haven’t been many butterflies around but on dry, warm days the rabble of butterflies or if you like the swarm of butterflies all come rolling in. I did see two brownish coloured ones in what I assumed was a courting ritual as they flew around each other in a sort of aerial chase.
