Whitebirk Roundabout

I take back every comment I made about the Roundabout yesterday.

This morning I decided to test out the new lights and brave going via the motorway to work. I got to work approx 20-30 minutes earlier. I couldn't believe it and nor could my colleagues :D. I was the only one waiting at the lights when I got to the roundabout coming from the motorway. It was well worth waiting the ten years it took them to finish it. Absolutely made up :D:D.

What is it like coming from tesco and going down Whitebirk Drive towards PCWorld? I can't believe they have screwed up the little roundabout with a bus lane.

Can you still get off the little roundabout to go to the Range or have they closed that exit?

Maybe they might start sorting out the next junction now then at Shadsworth, although that one was clear going off the westbound lane this morning, as usual the eastbound slip road was backed up on to the motorway.

Yes you can still get in the range from the roundabout. The bus lane has broken white lines for you to cross over at the entrance to the range

I thought they were doing that when they were doing the road works
That is one of the most dangerous things I have seen. The designer of that should be shot. What are you supposed to do if there is a couple of buses on your inside? Stop on the roundabout and wait until they have gone. You cannot drive in the bus lane so how are you supposed to use that exit.

Also why have they removed the continuous lane that went from the bottom roundabout to the top and left down Whitebirk Drive? That should have been extended all the way down to the bottom roundabout as a third lane. I wonder if the lights will stop traffic queuing around the bottom roundabout at peak times?

No it is a roundabout. They like to pretend they have built a ring road around Blackburn, the roundabout is just part of it.

I don't think so. It has signs above the lanes telling you which lane you need for the ring road, which is down Whitebirk drive. All that messing about on Preston New road, Montegue Street, around Asda and B&Q is there idea of making a ring road around Blackburn.

They should fill the middle up with petrol and set fire to it :D

Then Blackburn would have something that most of its residents has got ;)

Are Blackburn w Darwen not going to close part of the bottom roundabout for regeneration work in the near future, sure it was posted in the LET - public notices (last week I think)
Is there not a patch of land on the right of the slip road to The Range, where Davies's Pet Foods used to be? (being kind with the name there)

Does anyone remember the boat yard that used to build and repair canal barges at whitebirk? and the tip where the police station is now.

Well, you see its quite simple really - some people may consider them to be largely the same, the fact is there is a big difference. You see, a ring road is a road that you drive along that goes round something, in a roundabout sort of fashion. This should not be confused with a roundabout which is a road that you go round which serves only to take you round something whilst a ring road is a road that is designed for you to go round in order to perhaps get round something.

A ring road should divert traffic around the outskirts of a town , reduce the traffic in the town centre

A roundabout I guess is just a circular road junction

Ah yes, Mike, but a ring road is not necessarily in a ring ..depends on the geography of a town. Can also have many roundabouts on a ring road. A roundabout is only placed at a busy junction to aid traffic to get to their destination, whether on the ring road or crossing over main thoroughfare ... :D

The combination of roundabout with traffic lights is now ideal for this busy junction .. been through today and a piece of cake.

Roundabouts are Ok, but safety traffic management has to be considered at all times as opposed to flow of traffic. Roundabouts are always more accident prone than traffic lights, because it is dependent on human judgement, not like traffic lights when you stop at a command. Think the mixture at Whitebirk is excellent.

Someone suggested a roundabout at the Hare and Hounds in Clayton, but this would not work for reasons above. Safety will always overide traffic flow.

Re: Whitebirk Roundabout

A ringroad is a road which takes you past a town without having to go through it. The M25 is a sort of ring road. A ring road usually goes all the way round a town or built up urban area (but not necessarily in a ring.) and can be approached and used from a variety of directions as opposed to a by-pass which usually only goes from A to B and B to A (like the A59 by passing Skipton.)

A roundabout is just a type of road junction. It can be an alternative to a simple cross roads where two roads cross over each other and instead of just the intersection you have a roundabout. Or it can be a larger affair with more roads joining into it. In some cases it can even have smaller roundabouts as sort of offshoots of it. It can even have traffic lights to control which approach roads have access to it. It usually does not have anything much in the middle. Some have statues or other decorative items in the middle, like flower beds or trees. It certainly wouldn't have a town in the middle!
