Did the Earth move for you?

I think we just had an earthquake!

Just before 1am, the whole of my house lifted up, and shook for about ten seconds.

I've never felt anything else like it in the UK.

Anyone else experience it?

Re: Did the Earth move for you?

I remember an earth tremor in the early seventies.

This was much more severe.

I thought there had been an accident, and my house was about to fall down.

Could be after shocks from the terrible earthquakes they're having in Indonesia.

We're all doomed....doomed I tell you.

Went on for longer than ten seconds here n was quite bad, epicentre is louth apparently. There's been some damage.

At least my third, knew what it was straight away. I felt the 5 one from yam yam land, that did severe damage if i remember rightly some houses had to be knocked down.

dont want to be a Jerimiah and bring bad news , but you can be sure your water and gas bills will be going up , the utility companies are going to be saying they need to upgrade all the old cast-iron gas and water mains in the name of public safety and guess who will have to pay ? suggest you get online to your brokers/pension fund managers and tell them to buy stock in water and gas supply companies.

not trying to be facetious, but people will make money out of this ,

My plants are doing well!

The first time I knew about the earthquake was when I was inundated with texts from students back at my accommodation and even friends back in Accrington. I blame not noticing on alcohol or the music with loud base going on upstairs.

I quoted your post because when I got a lift home the taxi driver was telling us about a "client" who was... getting intimate with somebody as it happened. :p

As far as I'm concerned nothing has been effected around where I live, but other areas of Hull have experienced fallen chimneys.

It woke me up and it sounded (in my sleepy state) like gravel being thrown at the window and the bed was shaking violently!! I was half asleep, but this morning I did wonder if I'd had some sort of fit during the night (I remembered shaking in bed).

I'm glad it was something that could be explained, as it did worry me this morning.

My cat opens wardrobe doors.
I had to change the ring style drawer handles on my bedroom suite- he was using them like doorknockers.

I once had a fridge which he had learned how to open.

So I wasn't surprised when I thought he had learned how to shake the headboard. :)

Re: Did the Earth move for you?

Well, id just finished watching 4 episodes of 24 and gone to bed when it started. Seriously thought it was someone breaking in after the initial sensation of 'why's my bed moving like im on a boat' had subsided. I spent a good 10 minutes with the aid of a golf club, checking each room (making sure I covered my exits and blind spots and, like any good CTU agent, opening the doors first before entering) for intruders!

Wasnt till this morning that I found out it was an earthquake - had no idea what it was when experiencing it!

I`d fell asleep on the setee only to be woken by a rumbling sound and strange sensation at 00.58, thought i was dreaming but when i got up i was staggering about as the whole house was shaking(had`nt had a drink) the wife and kids were totally oblivious to it all.then i heard a loud bang but as it was windy i did`nt think anything of it.I relayed this to my workmate when i got in at 5.30 this morning and he laughed and said i`d been dreaming it was only when Chris Moyles on the radio caught my ear when he mentioned Epicentre that i found out what had actually gone on:eek:

I was woken by next door's dog howling at about midnight, thought " I hope he's not doing that all night " then I went back to sleep only to be rudely awoken by the bed moving (and not in a good way ;)). I remember thinking "oh that's an earthquake" shortly followed by "don't be daft this is Accy" . I convinced myself I had probably had one of those daft dreams where you wake up with a start, when me and daughter got up bleary eyed at normal time we both said we hadn't slept well !
Didn't know owt about it till the girls at work mentioned it !
Experienced one in Spain a few years back but last nights was stronger; can't say that I liked it either,it's the fact that we have no control over these forces of nature that makes them so scary !

Earthquakes don't usually make any sound that we can hear without amplification. I have been in 2 earthquakes (about the size of last night's) and there was no sound. I wonder what was causing the noise you heard, Panther. Maybe it was a few houses foundations shaking.

Was sat in front of the computer and heard a loud rumble thought it was a lorry heading for the house then it seemed like the ceiling and wall in the middle of the house was going to fall down, then seemed to stop and then the chimney started to move - sat with my feet up on the chimney breast as well never moved so fast and then turned the radio off.

By the way told spug and he said it could be the mine workings from huncoat - i said we had no mine workings under this. Oh but they went a long way from huncoat you know. By the way he didnt feel nowt.

Been speaking to a chap today who is very well up on earthquakes; he says they do make a noise depending on what type of quake it is, he reckoned we have a some tectonic plates under the Pennines that are like a mini fault line that would move in this kind of quake, that would create the noise. He said some quakes are caused by the earth under the crust turning to liquid !!!??
But thankfully not here !

ps I certainly heard something but I really couldn't describe it other than a low rumbling noise .

Re: Did the Earth move for you?

I was led in bed trying to get to sleep. Just turned over and got comfy when, the bed started shaking. First I thought it was the dog at the end of the bed. Then all the coat hangers on my wardrobe started vibrating. I Sh!t myself.

I woke Ginger and said " The house is shaking....." he grunted and said " ok " I went down stairs and checked the house.....then nothing.

Phone started ringing and it was my mate next door but 2, " mel....please tell me your house has just been shaking, I think I'm losing the plot " :D I said " yes.....thank god someone else felt that " So that convinced Ginger.

We put the news on and discovered the culprit. Then gingers phone started ringing.....then text messages.

The weirdest thing I have ever felt. The only thing I can describe it like is, turbulence on a plane. I didn't hear any noise....but that's probably due to my four poster bed being rattled and my wardrobe nearly falling over.

Re: Did the Earth move for you?

I was asleep and something woke me but I didn't really know what. Busman and the girls were sound asleep and nothing seemed to be amiss so I just went back to sleep again. The first I knew we'd had an earthquake was when I listened to the news at 6:30am on the radio.

Come to think of it something must have moved because my wardrobe doors were open.

I wonder if it has dawned on anyone that the reason not much damage has been reported on that website from the area around the epicentre may have something to do with them having better things to do than go on the internet to find out if there's a website about it! Some of them aren't even in their houses let alone on their PCs.

I definitely heard a noise, before everything atatred to move, it souded like a heavy wagon going past, I live on a cul de sac so I knew there couldn't have been a wagon going past.

The geographical fault line that passes through this area is the Craven Fault line. If you fo to Clapham (in the Yorkshire Dales), and walk up to Ingleborough Cave, you can actually see the fault line in the rocks. Apparently there are not many places in the world, whee fault lines are actaully visable.

I was downstairs. I thought the ceiling was going to fall in. The cat sat up tongue poking out and looked at me in that tone of voice that said what have you done now.
Mick slept through the whole thing.

I was sat on my friends settee at the time and when I mentioned that I felt things rocking she said it must've just been a train because she never noticed. We didn't even question the train theory until we saw people discussing it on facebook. Rock and roll haha

Apparently there are not many places in the world, whee fault lines are actaully visable.

Been there and walked up to Ingleborough Cave but I never knew that so we didn't see it because we didn't know to look for it. Wish we had done.

Photos please next time anybody goes up there.

It was exactly the same in our house, Panther. I wondered what the hell was happening. I've never known anything like it....very frightening.

We were only in Skeggy last week. I dread to think what it felt like to those living there, they must have thought a bomb was going off!

It woke me up in Leeds. In the morning I went to work and the town looked like a war zone. So no change there then.
