Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
I feel sorry in general for those who have been left disappointed, dont get me wrong, particularly if your child didn't even get into their second choice, but I find it hard to feel sorry for someone who is annoyed at where their child got put when they only put one choice down. Surely its common sense to know that schools can get oversubscribed and they cant have everybody, so it's wise to put in a security choice?
How can you complain if you dont put down other preferences? It basically just looks like you dont care where you get put if you dont get into the first choice. |

Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
Sounds like a lot of people didn't get their first choice this year, a friend of mine put Haslingden down for her daughter, they live near me and their daughter is at Peel Park same as Kelsey was, yet she hasn't got in, she has her second choice of Hollins.....odd.
They are appealing against it as she has family at Haslingden. Also been told that BRGS have changed their admission policy, previously the child sat the entrance exam and you had to put BRGS down as your first choice before the exam results came out meaning that if the child then failed the exam you had wasted your first choice and other schools don't look too favourably on not being first choice ! Now you get the exam results before the forms have to go back, hence the huge influx of kids trying to get into Hassy high ! |

Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
Whats got to be a bit demoralising is when you are a teacher at a school thats at the bottom of everyones selection list and you know that come September you are going to be facing a new bunch of societys retards/rejects...... wonder if they ever feel they missed a step on the career ladder

That school is shockingly over subscribed. If the lads have met all the criteria, i.e going to church regularly and still not got in then what's going on? Is it now so over subscribed that they are having to look at how long people have been attending church? |

On a slightly different note (I don't usually go off topic so please excuse me) I did hear a kid say the other day that she did not need to go to church on Sunday now she has got her place at St. Christophers :D Not mine by the way, they all went. |
Re: Secondary School Admissions for September

I went to catholic schools but I dont recall them checking my church attendance. Probably quite a good job too because I didn't come from a religious family, so I'd have had a job with that at primary school :p and I think the idea of a 12yr old going to church by themselves is weird so even high school woul be a bit strange too... it's so abnormal that I imagine the regulars (who are slowly becoming extinct) would actually frown upon it and accuse you of being up to no good! I've never met anyone who didn't get into the school of their choice. I think people who have gone to a religious primary school have it easier because when you leave there the nearest religious high school EXPECTS you to go there. St Christophers aren't being overwhelmed with christians, they're being overwhelmed with the best pupils because it's the best high school around and gets the best results. I hate to be a bit shallow but it also has quite a nice uniform and I bet some people pick it for those reasons too. Out of interest do these problems occur the same with primary schools? Because obviously they can take even less students on per year... |

You still don't have to sign a register when you enter church, and I'd be surprised if the priest checked every time to see if you were there. You do meet with the priest so many times, but it isn't really fair I dont think to just a childs faith on their parents. Though I of course would never claim life is fair. I just don't recall ever going to church much to get into school, though I remember my christening. |

Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
in Some churches there is a register type of system. A good vicar who knows his congregation will know who's there and who's not. Also the children usually attend sunday school at the church and a register is taken there, so it may be noted on that if they are with or without parents.

I actually thought a lot of churches stopped doing summer schools, though I think St Pauls Methodists still have one, an Rhyddings methodists... and that one at the bottom of new lane...
Not so sure whether I know any others though. |

Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
i have been thinking for a long time now if i should really bother with Our Ladys or not, should i chance Reece getting a place there or should i ring up another school and ask if they have any places left? i rang Rhyddings and spoke to a lovely lady over the phone who advised me to ring the Globe Centre in Accrington, which i did, and they have several places left at Rhyddings, yes i know i should have put 3 choices down in the first place, and yes this is my own stupid fault for not obiding by the rules, but i needed to settle a place for Reece so both he and me have piece of mind, so i'm off to the education today to accept a place for Reece at Rhyddings
as long as he doesnt have to go to Blakewater i'm not bothered |
Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
its a bit far to travel to rhyddings everyday isnt it?, you live in blackburn dont ya?
|
Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
good luck Flashy
|
Re: Secondary School Admissions for September
Travel is bearable if it gets the education you want for him.
My grandson travelled from Ossy to Waterfoot, changing buses, for his secondary school. He didn't get home until turned 5pm - but time spent on the bus = time not spent getting into mischief ;) |
Re: Secondary School Admissions for September

My grandaughter had to do something similar Margaret. Catch the bus from Clayton to Whalley, change there for bus out to Grindleton . Bowland High School. Her mum did a practice run with her before school opened and she went every day herself from thereon. Now she is living in Dewsbury, and at college in Leeds, so walking down to the station and catching train is no hardship for her. I think Flashy lives around Intack ? not very far. She will no doubt let us know, and feel sure will be on some sort of bus route. I'm pleased she is getting Reece sorted anyway. |
