Do people feel funny about others using their real names?

so many times i've seen on accyweb that people instead of saying the screen name use the real name

on some forums people be incredibly protective of their real name when ppl accidently mention it yet it doesnt seem to bother alot of ppl on here

would you be bothered if someone typed in ur real name on here?

Do'nt bother me-it's just a sign in name if everyone called pete signed in as pete you would not know who you were talking to-but with Benipete you still do not know- easy as that.:hehetable

Re: Do people feel funny about others using their real names?

nah, no problem for me ,just a question of familiarity , though I have wondered (never having the chance to attend one) what do Accy web users call each other at the monthly meets , are name tags issued to first timers ? .....I suppose new attendees introduce themselves by their screen names .
Guess it depends how well you know the person , anytime I have used the PM feature I allways sign off with my "Christian/given" name and those who have PM'd me have done the the same.
Seems at times Accy web could come across as a bit 'incestuous' or 'mafia like' (kick one and your kicking twenty) or intimidating to a new user, but I put that down to the majority of users being familiar to other frequent users quirks, (wether they know them personnally or not) ,which is understandable, but its never come across as a problem for me , and new users allways seem to recieve a warm welcome.

I have no issue with my real name, entwisi is my online identity in that its a name no one else uses anywhere so I can always keep teh same name. If you see entwisi anywhere its me :D

I'm not bothered about people knowing my name, in fact I actually published it on here after 2006 local elections. It apears that a lot of people on here know each other, whether its through going to the monthly meets I don't know, as I've never been. personally I know very few, Neil Rindi, Gayle, Cyfr after that very few.

Re: Do people feel funny about others using their real names?

I have no problems with people knowing my real name on here, although Margaret Rothwell and myself did exchange a few anxiouss pm's when someone I'd upset said they were coming over to the U.K., to hunt down those who's 'dissed' him.

Occassionally I do long for the mysterious anonymity that members like Acyrlic-bob have on here, but thinking about it I've got too big a mouth, and have given to many clues as to who I am, if people were really that interested in knowing.

Plus, if I'd never met a lot of you at the meets, my life would be so less richer, as I've made some great friends on here.:)

User name or real name, I don’t care which. After all I chose my user name and my parents gave me my real name.

What I don’t like is people abbreviating either. I view it as a discourtesy and as a general rule I ignore their posts when they do.

Just as interesting, I suppose, is why people use the pen names they do. The first time I popped on Accy web it said sign on with a name; I hadn't a clue what name to use, but looked out the window and lo and behold: the Tea Building Shoreditch. With a slight change, that did the trick.

It's weird when people whom I have never met use my Christian name, but I don't exactly have sleepless nights over it.

Re: Do people feel funny about others using their real names?

Its easier to type jen than shillelagh in the chatroom ........ plus hardly anyone ever spells it right anyway. Why shillelagh id been playing some records for mum and one of them was called shillelagh and shamrocks by bing crosby (for all those nosy enough to wonder who its by) and i couldnt think up a name so used shillelagh seeing as its a play on my last name as well. So thats why im shillelagh..........

So no im not bothered if you use my proper name rather than m y user name. Mind you i tell everyone to use jen anyway.

In short, no it doesn't bother me, I mean there are so many Sams it would be pretty hard to identify me off name alone - then again if someone really wanted to I guess they could find out exactly who I am picking up on clues left in posts...meh.

I think I would probably have to answer no to this question, it doesn't bother me, I am new here compared to many, but have met a few nice people in person, and quite a few know me, what I do for a living and where I work, not much chance of anonimity for me!

Then you will understand my objections to certain individuals who deliberately mis-name me.

A typo I can accept but deliberately mis-naming a person is just crass ignorance. It’s the sort of behaviour that belongs in a Kindergarten and so do the people who perpetrate such a discourtesy.

It is even more pathetic, lazy, disrespectful and insulting to call someone by a name other than their own.

Would you ask your greengrocer for a pound of CP’s?

Would you call your boss by his initials or his abbreviated name to his face, unless it was the norm?

This whole issue is a puerile sub-conscious attempt to try and establish an infantile superiority over the person you name. Old fashioned foremen would often mis-name a new employee as a means of establishing who is boss. Tradesmen would also employ the same tactic when addressing their apprentices.

I once, in affection, called a member on this forum 'Jim Bitty', inspired by that sterling BBC programme, Little Britain.

I'm not sure how well it went down.

Probably not as well as Mummy's milk.

my old general manager used to say to me how come everyone u meet u automatically reduce their name and call em something else eg Liz instead of elizabeth etc and how they might not like it

i now know the answer - cause i wanted to be more superior than them.

so from here on forth i shall rename all accyweb members cause i'm superior. no one shall be their usual name now.

Well I call him JB out of affection even if everyone else thinks he's a bum hole. You're all so unfair to JB. He only tries to express his opinions and you just make him feel really small an unloved.

Funnily enough though that's how he makes me feel too so you can pick on him all you like for all I care.

I signed myself in as West Ender as it seemed appropriate at the time. As I left the Accrington area 45 years ago there seemed small chance anyone would know me anyway.

Anyway my name is Cath (short for Catherine but I've never been called by my full name) and I'm quite happy to be called by my name, my pseudonym or, well, anything so long as it's decent.

Sorry, so very late to these threads!:(

However, I am very uncomfortable with people having any inkling of my real name. I am quite content with people knowing as little about my private /personal life as possible. I fear visits and retribution.
