Are they NUTS?
Trust the National Union of Teachers to serve a double whammy.
Not only are they suggesting that the Koran be taught in all schools, but they also seek to disassociate their members from 'Armed Services recruitment drives in schools. Let's wave the white flag now! |
Re: Are they NUTS?
I dont think its a good idea to teach any kind of religion in school. Accademic pursuit should be based on the teaching of knowledge to equip our youngsters with the necessary life skills and know-how to be able to make a place for themselves in the real world. I dont think belief mechanisms should really come into it - that should be provided, if so desired, by our communities, churches etc. Time has told us over and over again that the more you push religion onto people, be it directly or indirectly, the end result is always some form of conflict. I'm a catholic, but I am a catholic by my own choice - everyone else should be allowed to get there on their own as well.

The story, for anyone who hasn't seen it.
Fury over plan to let imams teach the Koran in state schools | the Daily Mail ...and yes, I think the members of the N.U.T., who voted for this motion, are nuts. |
Re: Are they NUTS?
but at least people will have some understanding of other religions. I went to Church(the building/religion not teh suburb!) till I was 18 and we now attend St Johns and until last year i knew very little of Islam. How can I be tolerant if I have no understanding of what I am being asked to tolerate?

thats a simple one ian, i'm tolerant of any religion, cos of the fact it is one, where my tolerance goes out the door is with fanaticals of any religion. ya dont need to know any ins n outs of em.

Re: Are they NUTS?
A faith school has the right to teach it’s own religion to the pupils.
A secular school should have one period a week to discus all religions prevalent in this country to help the pupils come to some understanding of them. |
Re: Are they NUTS?
ok, I am RC. i have worked in mainstream schools where the majority of children are muslim. i dont think its fair to teach one particular religion and i think that a small part of a few religions should be taught.which has to include the religion that plays the biggest part in the school. Teaching the Qoran would benefit all the children. and is not that different to the bible. Many of the stories are the same and i have found that the muslim children seem to know more about Jesus than the white children. It isnt fair to ignore the childrens religion and concentrate on another. This was highlighted for me the christmas before last which fell at the same time as Eid. All seasonal work concentrated on christmas and Eid was hardly mentioned.

Re: Are they NUTS?
ok ema, please explain why teaching the quoran would benifit all children? this is a christian country n surely the religion of the country should be taught here its that simple. it is not practical to teach all religions in school, education for the real world supercedes that.

Re: Are they NUTS?
because a better understanding af a religion gives us a better, more informed view of the people and imo would stop the stupid pointless prejudice and stereotyping that seems so common atm
|
Re: Are they NUTS?
we know that, but that dont explain were the time comes from to teach a second religion.

Went to the high school and we had 1 double lesson and 2 single lessons a week. They taught us about all different religons - c of e, catholic, baptist, methodist, buddhism, hindu, muslim, etc oh and this was 25 years ago. So whats different?

I would back up anyone who would propose for children to be taught about all major religions in schools. Not just major religions but new religious movements and new age secular practices, as their education progresses. Children should not be made somewhat ignorant by faith schools, as they have been done in the past. (I know - I was one of them. I knew nothing about important beliefs away from Christianity/the West until I took Religious Studies at 'A' level.) Children should be taught about religious diversity regardless of their upbringing or their family's religious convictions. This is the modern world - a global society. Britain can not continue to be so blinkered and insular. Multiculturalism exists and our children's education should correspond with that. Lack of education about religion breeds ignorance and stereotype, which in turn creates idiocy and hate. |
Re: Are they NUTS?
So does the team think that this religious instruction would be a one way or two way street?

If those who think that many religions should be taught in school why are the NUT specifically talking about the Koran ? I'm sure there must be the equivalent in Buddhism, Hinduism etc. Should they not be going through all of them ?

Re: Are they NUTS?
Lets just scrap mainstream school then, and teach the kids other religions and nothing else, most who are for this are the ones harping on about teachers not having time to teach properly as it is, and you want more religions brought in, well if they do, which lessons are going to make way for them, english?
|
Re: Are they NUTS?
i meant make them part of the religious studies lessons they already have.

I sometimes resist saying what I think about what is happening in England, because it really no longer is any of my business ... having said that, I will shoot off my mouth on this one and say that it seems to me that those in power in England seem not to be able to see the difference between tolerance and surrender. You are bending over backwards ... no, make that forwards ... to accomodate people who blow up your subways and buses and kill and maim your young service men and women. Within living memory Great Britain along with the three Dominions (Canada, Australia, and New Zealand for those who don't know what I am talking about) stood up for the whole world, and held off the Nazis while the Americans took their own sweet time growing a pair. And now, England seems incapable of standing up for itself. Sure the face of England has changed, but from what I read in this forum, the England of our grandparents and great - grandparents is still there, alive, if not well. It's as if pride in one's country and one's history have become distasteful. There is nothing wrong with patriotism ... look at Barb for example, one may not agree with a lot of what she says, but one has to admire ... at least I admire it ... her patriotism and love of her country. |

As Eric has said other countries seem to have put their house in order. We however are far too tolerant with those who seek to change the fabric of the British way of life.Having watched the news since my original posting;I am convinced that the lunatics are running the asylum.....and these are home grown ones at that!

After this latest nutty idea I could go along with that. |
Re: Are they NUTS?
Schools would have more time for the curriculum if they put the school hours back to what they used to be in my day – up to 1952.
That is 9:00am to 12:00noon then 1:00pm to 4:00pm with a 10 minutes ‘playtime’ break morning and afternoon. Each lesson lasted 40 or 45 minutes so we had 8 periods per day. That’s 40 periods per week. Woodwork, Metalwork and Games were 4 periods long. Most subjects were 2 periods long twice a week with only music and RE for one period once a week. |

That’s a lot of lost schooling. The high school across the road from me packs in at 3:00pm. And it would appear that actual lessons do not start until 9:15am and 1:15pm. |
Re: Are they NUTS?
Well to be quite honest if I had kids going to school I would want a say in what they were being taught, well religiously anyway. I cannot see what teaching about other religions is going to do to help our children make their way in life. religion is dying on its feet in this country, how many kids now go to church on Sundays or to Sunday school, or for tht matter how many parents go:confused:
