Bit of a debate going on over here , one Assembly member wanted to make it legal for women more than 6 months pregnant , and for two months after giving birth to be able use disabled parking spots

suprisingly some opposition came from womens groups , one spokeswoman said ..."Most women, not all women, in pregnacy should be physically active "

I can think of one person who'll think this is a good idea, and would also think it morally right for the pregnant women to sit in her car, parked in a disabled space, whilst her non-pregnant partner goes off to buy her a snack of coal.:rolleyes:

Why not let the ladies who are pregnant or have been in the position where a parking space would have been a godsend in the advanced stage of pregnancy answer this instead of some smart arse who would never be involved in a pregnancy?

The problem isnt really the walking to and from the car (well depending on how far or how big your belly is) but its the getting in and out of the car and nearest parking space to the loo, it would be handy if its for the loo dash unless their is a copper close by lol

We can go one better than that here in the U.K.

Although many carparks do have mother and child spaces, as well as designated disabled spaces, one heavily pregnant mother was fined when she parked in a mother and child parking space, because she didn't actually have the child 'with her'.:eek:

I gotta say that I did really struggle getting in and out of the car both during and after pregnancy. I was absolutely huge!!! (twins) I used to struggle and fight to get in and out of the car unless i was with my dad who is a blue badge holder. It was an absolute nightmare and I know that there will be other people in the same situation as I was in. There should be something to help people like that but in saying that I still find parking a nightmare even now, if there are no parent and chail spaces im stuck coz i gotta get 2 littles uns out of the car, one out each side and it aint easy but gotta agree really about the pregnancy bit, not so much afterwards bet defo before

Personally I think it's ridiculous that pregnant women can't use parking spaces that are designated for mothers and children.

If the disabled bays are full I use the parent and child bays- ok she's 36, i think, but she is still my child.The point is mindless people take up these spaces when they could walk the few extra yards.(The first bit was a joke)but the disabled spaces outside the townhall are always full.

there are plenty of pregnant women who dont have cars and walk , they are perfectly capable of walking from the car to wherever they want to go:D

This can be a very tetchy subject, being pregnant is not a disability, but I can't see any objection to a pregnant woman using mother and baby bays, but as Rindi pointed out some one got done for not having a baby. Speaking as some one who does have a Blue Badge I stick ridgidly to the terms of reference, it is able bodied people who use these spaces that give me the pip, but to be honest I would not complain if a pregnant woman used one, although it may fall foul of the reglations that say a blue badge must be dislayed at all times

I would agree with this Jaysay .. after all when you are getting towards the end of your pregnancy, you do need to keep the car door open at full stretch ..:D Also would give an opportunity to chat to the other mothers unloading their children, etc., on how they cope with prams, shopping, etc.

Don't think most pregnant women would use them anyway as the majority are still very agile, but respect the fact that not all women have the same experience .. as myself 'rock 'n rolling' with my daughter New Year's Eve, when she was due December 13th .. :rolleyes:

I agree davo as I have said I stick rigidly to the terms of reference, which states that the disbled person must not be in the car, people using the blue badge in the way you state can have them confiscated, end of

I could never open my door enough in a standard when i was past 5 months. I know that pregnancy is not a disability but feel that in some cases maybe a concession should be made. From 6 months I could not walk far at all (suffered from SPD which is a problem with your pelvis) and carrying twins (who were 6lb 12ox and 7lb 9oz at birth!!) it was very difficult. Getting in and out of the car was bad enough (i had to have help because of my pelvis) but when there is not enough space it is a nightmare. I know that some people are still running round at 8 / 9 months and not having a problem but there should be allowances made in certain circumstances. Not that i'll ever be in that situation again but other people will.

Why does the pregnant person have to be the driver tealeaf?

When i was pregnant (not all that long ago!) i had to have the door open wide or i just couldnt get out! the same after i had given birth because during birth i had broken my coccyx (do you know how flippin painful that is!) so i had great difficulty getting in and out the car and its only just better now. i think a pregnant person is just as worthy of the space as a parent and child.

Going off the point a little here, was re. disabled spots .. think this could be a little difficult and costly to administer, and some pregnant women just automatically applying for it when they are keeping Ok. Would definitely endorse the Toddler and Baby parking though.

The basic cause of this problem is-
supermarket parking bays are too narrow!

I have several dents in car panels from other car door handles.

Why put up with it?
Go to a supermarket where you can have a reasonably sized space
or, shop online
or, petition your favourite supermarket for better sized spaces

Maybes I will get shot at dawn for this one, but when I was pregnant, if there were plenty of disabled parking spaces, I would take one, also after he was born and there were no parent and child spaceds, again I would take one.

However everytime I have done this, generally supermarkets or larger shops, I would always speak to a member of staff and ask them if it was ok. They always said yes.

How peculiar! Do all the women in Oswaldtwistle indulge in the act of procreation in their motorcars or is it just a few of 'em? Still, they've always been a funny bunch there. I would have thought the bedroom or the dining room table would be a far more comfortable place to make babies.

There should be seperate parking spaces for men(standard) size and another for women (runway 2 Man Airport)

After you have had a c section you aren't allowed to drive anyway, I think its for 12 weeks, also you aren't supposed to push prams, trolleys, hoovers etc or lift heavy stuff, it's difficult enough having a newborn and having major surgery without some jobsworth telling you where to park. My ex hubby drove us to Asda etc and never parked in disabled bays but used family ones if poss. He had to drive, push trolley etc. I think reasonable allowances should be made, and common sense followed ( as if that's ever gonna happen:rolleyes:)

I don't think that a woman should be able to park in a disabled space just because she has urinated on a stick and two blue lines have apppeared on it. Pregnancy is not a disability........for most women.

However, as Emzy has shown, not all pregnancies are the same. Not all women sail through and not all women only carry one baby at a time so I don't think we can just class women as pregnant or not pregnant. Some women suffer pelvic conditions which mean they are in a lot of pain, have to use crutches and can't walk far.

I think maybe a little flexibility is the key and could we perhaps issue a temporary blue badge to pregnant women suffering from certain pregnancy related conditions or who are exceptionally large due to carrying twins/triplets? The badge would be valid for a set period.

All this would be unecessary if parking bays were not so small that only stick insect people can exit a car without difficulty.

I agree, i struggle getting boys out of car coz have child seats in boths sides and 2 (not so small but young enough not to get out themselves) children, it is difficult to say the least

I agree with Emzy and Lilly - a temporary blue badge status for some pregnant women should be allowed.

When I was pregnant with Maddie I had pre-eclampsia, from about four months in my joints swelled up and walking was difficult so I would have appreciated being able to park closer. When I was pregnant with Zack I didn't have pre-eclampsia but I did look like a large freighter coming into dock - I had a wide berth - I needed a lot of space to get out of the car door so again the parking was difficult, fortunately when I was pregnant with Zack I had an 18 month/two year old little girl so was able to use the mother and baby places.

not disabled spots but i cant see why someone would object to them using mother and child - thats just silly - who can say with a straight face that they dont have the child with them ?
i wouldnt care where they parked so long as they dont have their baby in the shop whilst stood infront of me in the queue lol cos i always seem to be in THAT queue :D

yes i have been in long queues in fact the following are the situations i usually find myself in whilst queueing thus i hate shopping:

1: behind the man who's bum swallowed a dead rat the night before and is slowly letting out the vapours

2: infront of someone who thinks ramming your ankles with a trolley will actually get them served quicker because, somehow, telepathically,you are transferring your pain to the till operator.

3: behind that really bloody annoying elderly man who is rattling his change in his pocket ( at what age do you actually start doing this)

4: behind the person who has left their purse/credit card etc at home - which is fine -i have done it myself but why do the till operators umm and ah so much about sorting it out ?

5: have got the new operator who has just voided the whole of your shopping off and has to do it all again

6: has the till operator who does a running commentary on my shopping

i think the most annoying thing that has happened was my mum turned up in asda to give me a lift home - really nice but i had to quickly hide the pressies and card from her as they were for her birthday -i managed to hide them all the way round asda - got to the till and the woman picked up the card and started to flippin read it, saying ooo how funny it was ha bloody ha - my mum was right next to me:mad: OMG i was livid
- it tickled me when my mum bent forward and said - "well at least i dont have to read it when i open it now do i?" the woman didnt know where to put herself lol
