Oswaldtwistle = Narnia!
 

I'm at Keele University and whenever I tell people I'm from Oswaldtwistle they are always like 'You just made that up.... that doesn't exist!!!!' or my favourite 'Is that like Narnia or something!'.

It makes me giggle when they try and pronounce it or spell it because to me Oswaldtwistle is the norm, to the people around the country it's a weirdo name! haha

Does anyone else know of any weird named places around England?! (apart from the rude named towns that everyone knows about :p)

Some place names just sound weird ... and Ossy is one of those places. I remember being in England at the time I was living in western Canada. People would ask; "Where in Canada are you from"? When I replied "Saskatoon, Saskatchewan" blank stares were followed by giggles.:D Could have been Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. Manyberries, Alta., Come-by-Chance, Nfld. ... Moose Jaw, Medicine Hat ... the list goes on. One of my favs has always been "Glossup.":eek:

Well I've travelled in this country quite a lot and was very surprised how many people had heard of Ossy. I used to drive a wagon with Oswaldtwistle written on the side, and the number of people who used to come up to us and have a chat about Ossy was unbelievable, and I've lost count of the times Ossy has been used in TV quizzes

Well there’s Ramsbottom up this way.

But there are many villages in East Anglia and the south of England with quaint names.

There is always the good old standby of llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch in Wales.

It means – “St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave”.

For some strange reason this forum puts a space in between silio & gogogoch. It would appear that this forum has a 50 character limit on a word.

A lot of my uni friends think Oswaldtwistle sounds funny as well, so I just say 'Accrington' and they say 'Stanley?'. They probably still don't know where it is but at least they can pretend :p

TBH Keele is a bit strange sounding.

When I used to travel around a lot and told people I was from Oswaldtwistle it not only broke the ice but 90% of people knew someone from the town and the others thought I must be Welsh!!

When Todmorden was on the news the other week the local reporter pronounced it as
Tod More Den !!

foulridge is usuall pronounced foul-ridge (instead of folridge) on the news and barrowford is pronounced barrerfud. lol

I'm proud to come from Ossy, though my Italian best friend, Milly, can still only pronounce it as Oliver Twist.:D

I struggled when I lived in Scotland for a while. Bear's Den. Cambuslang, which can be sung as the Bay City Rollers 'Shang-a-lang', for anyone old enough. Kirkcudbright, pronounced Care-coo-bree.

It's almost like a foreign country up there.:D

my grandads street name is a good one.....upper fern down green! that gets some funny looks lol
