I would not class him as pioneering.
Its his fault that many kids got bullyied at school for having holes in the back of their shoes ;)

I remember meeting him a few times and he was really generous.

My Grandad knew him somehow (not great friends I don't think, more acquaintances) - anyway, my Grandad took me into his shop once to buy some shoes and he gave us the shoes for free then took a fiver out of the till and gave it to me - bear in mind that it was about 30 odd years ago and a fiver was a fortune to me.

Apparently he always paid for the rounds in the pub (actually that's probably how my Grandad knew him, lol).

He was really generous in that respect.

Ooh the amount of Clarkes shoes my kids went through.he must have saved me a fortune,I would get their feet measured at a proper Clarkes shop ,and then say i would think about them ..then off i would trot to Tommy Balls..
