Food additives

At last something is being done to banish poisons from food
Food additives 'could be as damaging as lead in petrol' - Health News, Health & Wellbeing - The Independent
extract-Artificial food colours are set to be removed from hundreds of products after a team of university researchers warned they were doing as much damage to children's brains as lead in petrol

So don't let your kids drink gasoline;) Why ban them? If people are not really smart enough to know what is good to put into their systems and what is not then let them go for a diet of Burger King and Coke. We have enough people telling us what is good for us and what is not. Most of the time we already know this .... like those wonderfully informative labels on cigarettes "Warning: Cigarettes are highly addictive." No s**t Sherlock!!!! I wondered why I was spending $50 a week on the damn things:eek:

I have to agree with eric on this one. If people dont know by now that what they are eating is bad for them then they never will. Ill admit my diet isnt the best, but its my choice to eat that way. What ever happened to living in a free country, not so free when there are restrictions or bans on everything.

I have been only to aware of food additives for many years and have to be quite careful what I eat and drink, as far as E numbers are concerned, but its about time that these problems were opened up more to the public. When every body ate home made wholesome food there weren't half the allergies as there are today

Noble sentiments panther but some of use have no choice, but to watch what we eat or drink. I have a allergy to all sea food, Red Wine:eek: (thank heavens its not beer) and quite a few more. Its not long ago that that young girl died because she had an allergy to something in toothe paste.

This is like the no smoking thing, motorcycle helmets, seat belts, etc. No one is stuffing Burger King down our throats ... Just outside town at the railroad crossing on John Counter Blvd. there is a sign stating that it is dangerous to stop your car on the train tracks ... C'mon, if someone is stupid enough to park on the main CN line they deserve to get hit by a train.:stupid:

I think a lot of what they are saying needs to be said. We now have loads of kids with ADHD and other attention disorders mainly due to the fact of what they are being fed IMHO. I have no problem with folk eating what they want but do think they should consider how the food they are giving their kids affects their behaviour and well being. I was one of six children with a mum who worked full time but none of us suffered from any attention disorders because we ate fresh food that mum made.

I think this is the point. Your mom cared about her family and took the time to make sure that they ate properly. However, some moms will spend their day in front of the TV smoking, drinking, eating chips ... oops that should be "crisps" .... and not giving a flying f**k about what her kids do. And no amount of education or legislation will change this. I agree that govts. probably should legislate that food marketers should list the ingredients, levels of trans fats, cholesterol etc. on food, but this is the limit. Once the consumer is informed it is her choice what she does with the information.

Agree about the information on food but at the end of the day if you can't be bothered to cook good fresh food hardly think you are likely to read it so it is a waste of time really.:(

It's interesting how many of the discussions on AccyWeb, particularly the ones about "today's youth" ... you know the one's I'm talking about .... come to the point of talking about responsible parenting. And, unfortunately, responsible parenting can't be legislated.:(

Em I know you care about what Ty eats and so do most mums/dads but even you have got to admit that a lot of these problems with ADHD and other attention disorders are caused by additives in food.

well lets think of it this way , in the past when most of us oldies were growing up we didn't have fridges or freezers, our mums had to buy fresh, & have it cooked the same day, the only "convienience foods" were in a tin & lets face it FOOD DID TASTE BETTER then in them days.

Re: Food additives

I too have food allergies - lots of them!! Some are to so called natural foods like oranges, mushrooms and potatoes. Trouble is these foods are no longer natural, they are full of pesticides. Manufactured foods are a nightmare, I am allergic to some of the preservatives in wine, but the manufactures don't have to declare them as they use thes substances in small quantities.
Most of my allergies have developed over the last 10 years as preservatives have become more common.
With food labeling as it is at the moment it is almost imp0ossible for me to know exactly what I am eating, therefore I can not make a choice.

I have spent many years working (both voluntarily and in a paid capacity) with children and have seen ADD, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Alspergers and other learning/behavioural problems rocket, particularly in the last 10 years.

The parents who feed their children exclusively on junk food are the very ones who demand the right to eat what they want, but do they have the right to inflict problems of the type mentioned above on to their offspring?
