Time machine.
http://networkinstruments.files.word...machine001.jpg
Where would you go back to, and why? You can travel back in time, from yesterday, right back to the annals of time, be it the primeval swamp, or the garden of Eden, depending on your beliefs. The only rule is that you can't change history. So sadly no backing yesterday's National winner, and no knocking off Hitler. You can travel back to as many different times and places as you wish, though you might have to rejoin the back of the queue...and pay another pound.:D |
Re: Time machine.
i'd go back to when my mum was alive and be a better daughter, other than that i wouldnt change a thing in my life
|
Re: Time machine.
I'd like to go back to the day my mum and dad met:D
Just to see what they where like, and to see if my mum was as shy as she says she was, or a right little sod!:) that i would love to see and to see what my grandad's were like, cuz i never had the chance to see/meet them, because they died before i was born:( Also i would love to see what my fella looked like when he was a kid, id clout the little ****:D:D...HEHEHEE:tongueout but if i could halter history then i would try to stop my brother from dying:( |
Re: Time machine.
Um, that's an interesting question and the answer would depend on the where - for instance, if I got to go back to the 50s and was in Hollywood and met Dean Martin then I'd be thrilled, but if I went back to the 50s in Ossy I'm not sure I'd want to.

Re: Time machine.
My own first choice would be to find out what my grandfather was like. He was killed in Normandy in June 1944, whilst my granny was pregnant with my mum. We've only got photographs, and my granny could never really talk about him much, so I'd love to be able to have a conversation with him, and find out what sort of man he was.
Secondly, I'd go back to ancient Greece. I love the historical fact based novels of Mary Renault, and would love to have lived then...but only if I was rich. I'm too gobby to have been a good slave. Lastly I'd go back to the early 1930's. I'd want to be British, but living in either Paris or Berlin, and be involved with the art scene there. |

I wouldn't let you go on a rubbish time machine.:D |
Re: Time machine.
I didn't think you would Garinda!
Then in that case I choose the 50s, around the time of the original brat pack. I'd be in Las Vegas, (not Hollywood, what was I thinking). I'd meet Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr. |
Re: Time machine.
I'd quite fancy ancient Greece as well.
|
Re: Time machine.
I'd go back to a time when my paternal grandmother was alive...there would be so many gaps she could fill in for me with regards to the family tree.
I'd also go back to the night my Pa died...and instead of going home to my bed, as he insisted I do......I would have stayed with him......I would have told him all the things we never got to speak of. |
Re: Time machine.
How many goes do we get?
I'd like to go back to mid-Victorian days, with entrée into Windsor Castle, to see if John Brown really was knocking off the queen and whether she was amused or not. I'd also like to go back a few decades earlier to Catterall/Calder Vale to see my great great grandfather who, from records we've traced, seems to have had about 12 children and spelled his surname at least 4 different ways when he registered their births. I would ask him if my maiden name really was Sleddon or should it have been Sladden, Slaiding or Sledding as he didn't seem able to make his mind up. Finally, I'd jump forward nearly 100 years to see my dad's parents. His mother died in 1916 and his father in 1917, when dad was only 9 (middle one of 5 young brothers), and I've only seen a couple of photos of them. In one photo my grandfather is wearing a Grenadier Guards tunic and pillbox hat but my dad never knew if his father had been in the army and I'd love to ask him about it. |
Re: Time machine.
I'd go back to 1900. I would love to experience life back then and see how people lived.
|
Re: Time machine.
I would like to be a fly on the wall with Marx and Engels, also to have lived during th era of Wilde's writings and to see if Zola's J'accuse letter was as shocking as my history teacher (Tony Robinson) said it was.
|
Re: Time machine.
i'd love to go back to the time when humans began to evolve and say STOP its not worth it
all ur gonna end up doin is walkin around pound shops and worry about parking tickets stay apes and swing away... |
Re: Time machine.
Id go back to find out what both sets of grandparents were like and my uncle who was killed in the 2nd world war, then id go back to the 1800s to find out if the balls were really like, then to 1600s to see what it was like under cromwell, if it was as bad as what the history books say it was, and wouldnt mind a trip to discover america as well. I used to like history when i was at school..... until i got a rubbish teacher in the 4th and 5th year.

Re: Time machine.
I would like to go back to when micks parents were alive so i could have met them it would be nice to be able to put people with reference (so i could imagine the people who mick talked about!) and to go back to the week before my nan died when i didnt visit her in hospital, and to before my grandad died so i could have another chuckle with him.
I would like to visit the times when England was posh lol (like in mary poppins) if that ever really existed! humm but then i suppose for me it would be more like Oliver coz i would have come from the poorer end of the country! lol But otherwise i would just have to say ever forward never back! |
Re: Time machine.
I'd like to travel back to the 20s and met my Fathers Father, he died in 1934 as a result of being gased in the Great War, I have seen photos of him, but it would be good to see him for real
|
Re: Time machine.
I wouldent mind going back to Little House on the Prairie days...
I know its only a tele programme ,but i would quite fancy living like that.... Mrs olson had quite a good life...but i think i might be a bit nicer than she was..:D |
Re: Time machine.
To be fair i don`t think i`d go anywhere for the moment, never been as happy and content but ask me again in a few years when the girls have grown up and i`ll probably want to come back to today when the kids are little and not giving me the teenage problems i`m expecting!!

I'd like to go back to 1940, on a nice sunny summer's day (difficult on your side of the pond, I know) lie on my back in a field, have a cold beer, smoke a doobie, and watch the Battle of Britain taking place overhead.:alright:
Weird, eh;) |
Re: Time machine.

Watch young men, some not long out of school, fighting for their lives? Watch aircraft, with crew inside, spiral to the ground and explode? Watch burning pilots trying to control burning planes before they crash? The Battle of Britain sounds romantic and heroic but it was the same old bloodbath as every other battle. |

Re: Time machine.
What a shame we can't change history at the same time, I'd go back to the orchard and catch the apple that was about to hit Isaac Newton, that would ruin his inspiration!
Then as I was walking away merrily chewing on the apple, I'd turnaround and say, "No knighthood for you sunshine, you'll still be plain Mr. Newton", But I would be the hero of all those people that had to sit through hours and hours of the maths teacher telling us all about inertia and everything else he complicated our lives with! :D |
Re: Time machine.
i would go back in time so i could met my dad;b4 he passed; and met my other family ; but there is one thing i would like to go back in time for ; i lossed two sisters in 5 years one was to go ; but one wasn;t ; one had cancer; the other one i can;t say ;why she passed but it wasn;t her time ; so i;d go back in time for her

Re: Time machine.
To go back and watch the battle of Roarks Drift and see if the survivors really did sing 'Men of Harlech/Land of our Fathers' as the Zulus saluted them (think not) ;)
To go back , and sit on the grassy knoll in Dallas on the day JFK was shot and try to see from which direction the bullets actually came from. To go back and watch the football game on no-mans land between the British, French and German troops during the 1914 Christmas day truce. |
Re: Time machine.
I would go back to school and pay more attention to what the teachers were trying to get into my skull...I would learn more, daydream and window gaze less.

Dont laugh but I would love to travel back in time to America before the Native Indians were killed and ousted from THEIR country, to live on an Indian Reservation as a squaw, learning their values and spiritulism |
Re: Time machine.
Why are you all going back?
I want to look forward - it would help to know whether there really are going to be major natural disasters in 2012 (olympics aside ) as Mayan prophesy foretells. If civilisation is due to collapse I will get busy spending and enjoying my 'rainy day money' because with that sort of 'rainy day' it wouldnt be worth a light. |

That's a strange question, from someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of ancient Britain. By looking to the past we have the possibility of a better future.;) |

The future is the unknown -knowing that would more influence what we do in the present, and maybe we would change that future by present actions. We can learn a lot from the past but can plan better by knowing the future. Shucks Gary - I'm not up to all this deep physics theorising right now. |

Re: Time machine.
I would love to be in the court of Elizabeth l .. watching this strong lady rule the country and all the wonderful developments that happened during her time.
Would also like to talk to Anne Boleyn the night before her execution to let her know what a wonderful Queen her daughter will be. Only one condition I will travel on your time machine Garinda. Can I please take with me hair dryer, curlers, straighteners, make-up, soap, antiperspirant, hair lice lotion, toilet paper, etc., ? Would hate to pick anything nasty up ... :D |

I once saw a woman with an extra little thumb growing out of the base of her real thumb - many years ago - nowadays that sort of minor deformity would be corrected in childhood.
Continuing this historical thread wander---- The Stuart kings had a genetic hand deformity whereby the 2 central fingers were fused ---not so rare -- a child was born in Bramley Meade when I was there in 65, who had the same. |
