pmsfl, you should ring your daughters school and ask them if they will be getting permission

Not all schools are participating. We have already had confirmation that our school isn't taking part in this strike so the school will be staying open.

Yeah we got a letter too saying that Saffron's school could be joining the walkout and will let people know as soon as, although Saffron did say that her teacher mentioned this to them and she was not joining in

I liked a lot of the posts from the paper, this one is the last at the moment

Newly qualified teacher
A newly qualified teacher (NQT) can expect to start on a salary of at least:
£20,133 outside London
Experienced teacher
The scale for good, experienced classroom teachers who have ‘crossed the threshold’ rises to:
£34,281 outside London

Then, depending on where your teaching career takes you, there are other pay scales to define what you receive. Currently, these include:
• advanced skills teacher pay scale: £34,938 min; £53,115 max • excellent teacher pay scale: £36,771 min; £43,860 max • leadership group pay scale: £34,938 min ; £104,628 max, and
Teaching and learning responsibility payments (TLRs) are paid to teachers who have significant additional responsibilities within the school. The payments are worth between £2,500 and £11,000 depending on the nature of the work.
In addition to your basic salary, you will also receive a range of benefits, including:
• teacher’s pension : the second-largest public sector pension scheme in the country
• holidays: more days than many people in other professions , although teachers work 195 days per year in school, and carry outwork during their holidays
• housing help: the key worker living programme helps key workers into home ownership, upgrade to family homes or rent at affordable levels.......

'Scuse me whilst I pince the hair in my nostrils to help a little crocodile tear.

Does that mean wish you'd paid a little more attention to your teachers?:D

Not at all mate, I was glad to leave school and do not want to go back. I don't think they should allow people to be teachers untill they are 30 or so, let them gain some real world experiance away from the clasroom first.

I don't think you can generalise too much about age.

There are some great, inspirational, young teachers, and there are some duff older ones, and visa versa.

Yes I know that is the case in reality. You just meet some that are not in the real world.

I wouldnt like to see it happen, but if they ever privatised teaching they would get a shock. I cant think anyone would give them that benefit package :

"although teachers work 195 days per year in school, and carry outwork during their holidays" ... Ah bless em.

If teachers were paid as professionals in the private sector and in line with other skilled graduates, they'd be on alot more than £30,000-ish per year.

Maybe but they would not get 1 week a month off on holiday

Beside from what I posted that £30k is a little on the low side.

Not at all. Top of main-scale for classroom teachers is around £29000, any additional pay is, to all intents and purposes, performance related pay. PSP (Professional Standards Payments) are not guaranteed, but depends on whether you can jump through all the hoops and meet the performance targets.

The holidays are the only perk to teaching today. However, when you factor in all the evenings and weekends that teachers also work, 60+ hour weeks are not unusual and therefore even themselves out. When a teacher is 'on holiday', very often they will spend a significant period of that time working.
