Get it sorted.

PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING.

I was in Accrington town centre this morning for about an hour and in various shops i had to hold to my nose 4 times because people around me STANK.
I dont mean a bit whiffy, they left their smell in aisles that they had left a couple of minutes beforehand......its disgusting and there is no need.
I would have put this in 'anything goes' but i feel its a serious issue-fair enough if someone is homeless or has learning difficulties, but these people didn't.
Is this pure laziness?Whatever it is,it needs sorting.

Re: Get it sorted.

It's because they can only buy soap from pound shops and it's out date :D

Neil 18-04-2008 10:43

Re: Get it sorted.

It is because they dont buy soap, or wash their clothes.

You sure it wasn't you that stank? People have been known to have accidents without realising it, you know.

Anyway it wasn't an 'accident' smell,it was unwashed bodies-not even B.O just a musty 'i dont wash' smell.

Not with all the junk food the kids eat these days. I can't tell the difference between the smell wafting from the local Macdonald's and that of the stuff that farmers spread over their fields.

MargaretR 18-04-2008 11:21

Re: Get it sorted.

Most people did smell until after WW2
The Straight Dope: Is good personal hygiene a recent invention? (Did the days of old really stink?)
It is only now that most people dont, that you notice it more.
Sense of smell is heightened by pregnancy-(is there something you haven't told us ;))

I agree that the BO of a stranger can be very unpleasant, but it isn't harmful.
What bothers me more is the widespread use of poisonous petrochemicals masquerading as air fresheners/deodorisers which are harmful.

Twice in the last week I have had to wait in the chemists for a prescription and came out gasping for breath because they regularly spray in the shop. On the 1st of those visits I witnessed the counter girl spraying after a dirty man had been in, and asked her not to spray the end of the shop where I was sitting, but the artificial scent gradually permeated the whole shop area.

A walk down the detergent aisle in a supermarket is not possible for me.

Because I have a reaction to these petrochemical pollutants, I have eliminated them from my home environment, and my sense of smell has improved as a result.

There are toiletries, cleaning products, laundry products, and air deodorisers which do not contain poisons, but not many people take the trouble to find them and use them.

The petrochemical industry developed these products from mid 20th century, and research into asthma and other respiratory diseases is now considering that they are very likely to be a contributory factor in the increase of respiratory disease in our population.

So if I have to choose between breathing BO and poison - give me BO any time.

I have already mentioned that in my post;)- I remember that when I was pregnant I had to avoid the smell of cooking bacon and chicken because they made me vomit.

I tried very hard to think of a way to get the council involved, here goes:-

Perhaps the Council should issue the 'Litter Police' with sniffer dogs and anyone that causes the animal to keel over and faint can then be issued with an on the spot fine or a bar of carbolic?

By the name of this threads title are you saying it's accyweb members that are to blame by the way? because if your not then how can we 'get it sorted'?

I dont use air fresheners or those plug-in things in my house and haven't done since i was pregnant-i cant imagine them being nice or very healthy for Jack.....being a tiddler he is much closer to plug sockets than we are n if they are pumping out stinky stuff every few minutes i could see it being harmful.
I have the opinion that if your house smells,it needs cleaning.
If we have a whiffy nappy,i open a window.
As for the pregnancy suspicions...........HAHA no way!im past my broodiness and hopefully it will stay that way because im 80% sure i dont want another pot-lid.
Never say never though ;)

I used to go to fishermore(a few years ago now :D ) and the smell puts you off your dinner on a warm day... somehow they manage to say that the smell isnt coming from there, even tho everyone knows it does!

Re: Get it sorted.

The noses of these smelly people have become desensitised by the airborn petrochemical pollutants, so they cannot smell themselves and presume all is well.

It is a known fact that if you constantly use air fresheners in your home you become accustomed to that particular smell (ie -you no longer smell it) and need to change the fragrance used. One manufacturer has now marketed one that does just that at 15 minute intervals.

Dont ruin your nose - there are lots of nice smells you will miss out on

Must admit Lindsay, I have noticed a lot more of ... what we used to call 'scruffy' people around town these days .. shouting and yelling at their kids. Can't really understand why. Clothes they walk around in, I wouldn't put in a dog's basket to line it. Not just the style, etc., but badly stained, etc. Yuk.

Then there seems to be the other end of the scale, with mothers smartly dressed and children with polished faces in pretty outfits. Is the gap widening in our social classes I wonder ? However, no excuse for not buying a bar of soap, is there? Most people have bathrooms these days.

Just wondered how many people use soap now; I do keep some on the sink upstairs, but only used for washing hands after going to the loo. I have never used any for washing bodily parts for years now. Think probably to do with showers and use of the gels (unperfumed Margaret :D) .. much better. Even if you have a bath, the bath bubbly is better. Put soap in that and it kills all the bubbles. Never seen scum for years.

Sure that is not true emamum ... but you do tend to buy for kids first, don't you. Even now, still have the habit of looking at the children's section in stores ... such gorgeous things, and not costing a fortune either.

Yes, and found it extremely helpful Margaret, as suffer as you with certain perfumes. Not really the issue here though ... just the smell of human beings, which there is no need for today. Think probably the clothes that they have not had dry cleaned for years, using the cost as an excuse. Have seen nasty stains on washable garments though (and not the fresh stains you get from kids Emzy and Emamum) .. obviously been worn without washing many times. Wonder if they change their underwear often ... Aaaagh .. shudder at the thought ...

The overuse of petrochemical perfumes is relevant to the topic of body odour
because - people who use air fresheners lose their sense of smell and so cannot smell their own bodies.

Surely people who don't wash very often will not particularly be the people that use air fresheners. Let's face it .. even if you have no sense of smell .. you do have daily showers/washes, etc., and know when clothes are dirty.

NasalAir Guard personal air filter. Relief without drugs..
As seen on ITV "This Morning" Products for hay fever.
Recommended for asthma, hay fever and pollinosis, perennial and allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, and the effects of air travel

This ingenious device fits discreetly into each nostril, preventing allergens and pollutants from entering the nasal passages and reaching the airways. Special patented filters in the NasalAir Guard® trap pollen, dustmite and pet allergens, mould spores, airborne viruses, traffic fumes and other peoples' smoke, providing a real breath of fresh air without drugs.

Wearing a NasalAir Guard® takes a little getting used to - it's a bit like wearing contact lenses - and you may find your nose runs a little to begin with (that's a good sign, it's the sinuses cleaning themselves out). Simply remove the NasalAir Guard® and wipe clean, blow your nose and reinsert. After a short time your runny nose will stop.

You can use the NasalAir Guard® for a few hours at a time or overnight (can help with snoring!) and each one will last for 24 hours of continuous use.

NasalAir Guard® has been tested in the UK at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital and at the School of Molecular Medicine, University of Plymouth. Researchers there established that NasalAir Guard® successfully filtered out particles as small as viruses such as lambda and pGL3 DNA. This means that NasalAir Guard® can be used to reduce the risk of contracting colds and 'flu (common triggers for asthma), TB, meningitis and other airborne viruses and illnesses resulting from travelling by air.

*acts immediately to bring pure relief
*no drugs, no drowsiness, no side effects
*discreet soft clear medical grade plastic (not latex)
*each NasalAir Guard® personal air filter lasts 24 hours

Do you smell like fish?

The parents and child looked into the camera in horror from the Sofa they lounged upon, and (from what I remember), were advised, buy this plug and it in, (no mention of get of your backside and clean up),

next clip showed them sat happily together with the freshener plugged in.

Excuse me? You smell like fish? Ever considered a regular change of underwear and a wash of your essentials?

I did a google to see if I could find the Ad' no success, maybe someone else can find it?

If you think you have it bad having to stand behind someone who stinks in a shop then........ Spare a thought for health professionals. :D Every day, doctors, nurses, midwives, health visitors have to examine the great unwashed in hospitals, surgeries, clinics and their homes.

It is unpleasant to say the least and many of these people are young (age cannot be used to excuse them), unemployed (a hard days graft can't be used as an excuse) and generally healthy (disease can't be used as an excuse). The truth is that some people just can't be arsed to keep clean.

An ex colleague of mine used to tell them to their faces (while I was peeing myself laughing behind the clinic curtains)...:D She always used to say " I know you don't have much money but that's no excuse for being dirty". "Soap is only 20p at Home and Bargain".

Doing home visits is worse, because the houses smell, not of air freshener, but that same dirty, unwashed smell that is ingrained into their skin and clothing. I kid you not, but I once stood in a mouldy dog turd in someone's house. It was in the bedroom and had obviously been there for weeks. I had to wipe my feet on the way out so that I didn't dirty the street..:o

Hey up, no thought for the poor dog that has to do it's stuff in the house 'cos they can't be arsed to take it for a walk?

Strange how people that you think don't give a fulk about most things manage to give enough of them to fill the house with kids!
:p

My fella is a delivery driver and he once said he went into this house and the carpet was moving!!, on close inspection it was riddled with fleas or something else....EWWWWW, how people can live like that is beyond me!!....there the ones that probably STINK!!
It only takes a few minutes to shower (as someone stated once in another thread:rolleyes: ) and only takes ...well takes me a few hours:o to clean my house, so why do people live like smelly scruffs??.......bloody bone idle thats why:(, id be very ashamed if that was me!!

I had to have a gas man out recently and apologised as my lounge and kitchen were messy*-not dirty, just messy* (Jacks toys scattered everywhere, plates unwashed from the night before and a washing pile the size of mount everest).....he turned up at 9am and i had been ill the day before so hadn't done much housework:o anyway the guy said it was clean and tidy and i thought he was having a laugh:confused:....but he told me that houses he had been to in Fern gore and surrounding areas had fresh and old dog faeces on the carpet, manky gravy splashed up the walls, kids in nappies that had been pooed in 2 or 3 times and the parents had only just decided to change them-in front of the gasman himself(!),sick on the stairs that wasn't cleaned up,and even a dead cat that was rotting was found in the fitted cupboard that holds the boiler that was in the kiddies room:( the woman who lived there apparently said she thought it was the smell from child's bed cos s/he hadn't stopped peeing the bed.
I dont know how people can live in such conditions-theres no excuse.
Yea housework is hard work and tbh sometimes i think 'stuff it,il do it tomorrow',dont we all?
But to even HAVE dog poo in your house, let alone LEAVE it in your house is VILE.

I do hope he wasnt referring to my house lol

I dont know how people can let there homes get into a state like that. I would be embarassed if my home was like that. I would be ashamed to let anyone in.

Re: Get it sorted.

All this talk of poo in the house has reminded me of a programme I watched a couple of years ago.

It was called Are You Being Serviced and it was all about council workers in Blackburn.

In this particular episode the council guys had been called to a house in Blackburn. The tenants had left and they were cleaning it up for the next occupants. I'll never forget this....

In the corner of every room....living room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms were piles of human poo and the carpets were soaked with human wee. Needless to say the stench was gut wrenching.

There was a perfectly fully functioning bathroom upstairs which had never been used. The two adults and their 3 children that lived there never used the toilet. They just squatted in the corner of whatever room they were in and just deposited all their business there and left it!

Now what's that all about? Why would anyone do that? :(

P.S.... Lettie, you and your colleagues deserve an M.B.E.

I can only imagine the horror of having to examine the private parts of the great unwashed, especially during the hot summer weather. I bet it makes you want to throw up.

Good on your colleague who told the stinky beggars to familiarise themselves with soap and water. :)

It seems to have got worse over the last few years Lilly. Gone are the days when 2 Hattie Jacques lookalike nurses used to sweeney march smelly clients into the bath:). It is so P.C. these days that patients complain when you tell them the truth. It's amazing how many people will not have a shower or bath before an operation or after childbirth.

What on earth is wrong with these people? They don't even seem to have any idea about basic hygiene. There is no need for it.

Excuse me? You smell like fish? Ever considered a regular change of underwear and a wash of your essentials?

I did a google to see if I could find the Ad' no success, maybe someone else can find it?
