The U.S. government never funded the IRA. The organization received private donations from American citizens of Irish descent. The IRA may also have engaged in a little Belfast bank heist to the tune of $50 million. Or so the British government suspected. Sinn Fien also indulged in money laundering according to Ireland's Justice Minister. Several police raids were conducted - as recently as '05, I believe, netting around $6 million.

This being followed by "they" having liked and funded the IRA, I assumed you were referring to the same entity. So this is merely a misunderstanding or lack of clarity.

The individual funders in question apparently felt more Irish than they did American.

Don't get your hopes up ... America is facing tough times ahead, much tougher decisions than whether to take Mandela of a watch list have to be made ... and if I were American (this is all hypothetical, eh) I would want someone in the White House whose commitment to America, let's call it patriotism, is beyond question. McCain has already sacrificed a hell of a lot for his country, his courage and integrity is beyond question ... I just happen to think he is the right man (oops, person) for the job at this point in America's history.

I still have my reservations about him , no-one to date has brought up his involvment in the Savings and loan scandal a few years back , having said that I think he will be a shoo-in , my vote will be a write- in for Ron Paul

Me too. I think McCain resolved the S & L issue a long time ago. One thing I will give him credit for is that when a problem arises he doesn't try to obfuscate. Just gets all the details out there right away. It's the best approach. His biggest problem at the moment is the base of his own party. They don't trust him. He's done the tango one too many times with libs like Teddy Kennedy. Mr. Johnny has a lot of work to do in the months ahead.

Ron Paul ran for president once before on the Libertarian ticket. I voted for him that year. On domestic issues, he's fine. But given the current threats to our national security, I find him rather weak.

Gosh I do so hope McCain wins! If it would one of those others, I'd have to make a leaving the country promise. So, who's got room for a nice guy like me? Of course I'd have to bring the pets and farm animals!

I don't know ... I think Americans are smart enough to realize that McCain is a hell of a lot different from Bush ... McCain is an American and has the scars to prove it ... Bush is nothing more than opportunistic son of a former President. (Jeez, I almost said "opportunistic son of a bitch":eek:)

Yeah, McCain has never followed the Republican line. He has a dtermined independent vstreak that this country can really use. I believe the honeymoon period is coming to an end for Obama.

Glad to see in the latest polls that McCain soundly trounces either of the Hillbamas! :>)
