just got a call... went like this...

me..hello?
silence..........
caller: hello...
me:hello
caller: is this mr or mrs.........
(i dont think i sound like a man)
me...no
caller: is this number ......
me: yes
caller: hello mrs ....
me: thats not me, you have the wrong number
caller: mrs... i am calling from ....
me: i am not mrs..... you have the wrong number
caller: is this number ......
me: yes, but that person doesnt live here
caller: oh, who are you?
me: why?
caller: am i speaking to the home owner?
me: no
caller: can i speak to the home owner?
me: its a rented house
caller: mrs......im calling from .... we have a special deal this month
me: im not interested thankyou and i am not mrs.....
caller: we are offering...
me: goodbye....
caller: (carries on talking)
me: puts phone down

idiot!!
how hard was it to accept that he had the wrong number!

I shall continue his sales pitch.

Him: You want a mobile phone, it is a special deal.
You: No I'm ok
Him: Special deal free phone only paying for contract.
You: No thanks, bye
Him: But Mrs your friend would want a mobile phone?
You: *hang up*

It doesn't sound like a wrong number, because he asked to speak to the home owner.
You need to get listed with the home telephone preference service

he asked for someone by name then asked for the home owner after i told him they didnt live here.... than called me by that name again!

Next time don't hang up, just put the receiver on a table or something and let them keep talking, it costs them money :)

I used to get these calls all the time, until I registered with the preferance service like Margaret said. The only people who bother me now are firms trying to sell me Satellite repair contracts, I must get one a week, I just say to them you should not be calling me, then before I can finish my statement they hang up, sorted:rolleyes:

Like Margaret said, if you register with the Telephone Preference Service it does cut down the number of unsolicited calls you receive, though sadly it doesn't stop the ones from abroad.

If I'm feeling peevish I sometimes chat for ages, about the weather in India etc., before terminating the call.:D

some of these firms call computer generated numbers, the name is anything they can think up, the theory is that it gets a conversation going, they just dont know how to use it, also, they are reading from a script, so if your answer isnt in the script, they ignore the fact you spoke and carry on with the script.

I like it when they ask to speak to Mrs...... i say i can give you the address where she is but there is no phone there its 531c st johns stonefold grave yard - they soon hang up....
