Rewarding parents

Hi all
I was listening to the news yesterday and it said that they where thinking of rewarding(giving them more money) parents on benefits for reading there children stories, going to parents evening or cooking them a good meal.
Now my reaction was what about those of use who work but still find time to do those things. Are we to be forgotten?
What is your opinion?

Re: Rewarding parents

Happily it looks like this idea, put forward by the National Association of Head Teachers, has been rejected by the government.

BBC NEWS | Education | Good parents 'should be rewarded'

Re: Rewarding parents

Parents shouldn't have to be cajoled into caring for their kids properly, especially those who aren't working and therefore, have more time to cook a decent meal, read to their kids etc.

This sounds just like nothing more than a social experiment to me. If people need to be offered money to do simple tasks like read to their kids or make a decent meal then, they are not fit to have kids IMO.

Re: Rewarding parents

I think it might be a better idea if Clarissa White, president of the National Association of Head Teachers, and her fellow colleague's salaries were dependent on whether children leave their schools able to read and write.

Re: Rewarding parents

it's a poor do when parents are rewarded for bringing up their kids right, that should be basic, and if they don't they should be barated for it:mad:

That almost implys that parents on benefits are bad parents wheras those that work are the good ones, but i'm sure you dont mean it that way lol

Nickelson 04-05-2008 10:59

Re: Rewarding parents

surely they should already be good parents anyway.

emzy 04-05-2008 11:03

Re: Rewarding parents

I do all this anyway, shouldnt do it for financial gain, I do it for my children and for the enjoyment that I get from it. You shouldnt have to reward someone financially for doing things like this, its stupid

I'm a parent of two they are now adults with children of their own, I used to do all of those things willingly for my children and have been rewarded by seeing them turn into responsible and happy adults.

I look forward to helping them do these things for their children again the rewards will be seeing them grow up to be.....

:)

I think it was said as a safe bet that it wouldn't cost the government anything. The future generation of parents will hardly be able read anyway

Agree, it's basic parenting.

Re: Rewarding parents

How sad.

Things like reading to your children and attending school's parents evenings should be done by all parents without the need for financial incentives.

To see their child happy and well educated should be all the incentive parents need.

Re: Rewarding parents

What a joke.....even though the idea has been thrown out what if.....
Would it mean:
Parents would have a health visitor or such like sitting in on them making sure they are doing the things they say they are doing?
Why are they not soing these things anyway?
What about parents that are not on benefit?
Whats considered a 'good meal' by some may not be considered good by others.Who will decide?

What it all coming too :(

Jack is actually bored of me reading books to him now-he prefers playing with his trains before he drifts off, and he will kick off if i start reading a book, unless his really tired.
He knows a book called 'This little babys morning' off by heart (1 sentence per page-8 pages long) because i have read it to him so many times(it was his favourite).
He gets books from the library but prefers going through catalogues
And on Friday im going to take him to a reading session that starts at 2:30pm at the library for the first time to see if he will enjoy someone else reading to him......
anyone wana give me any money for doing so?

It was a dig at the way society is going and a generalised statement. Of course I know at least one likely future parent will be able to read :D

It wasn't suggested by the government.

The government have rejected the idea.

It was put forward by some silly biddy who is president of the Head Teacher's Association.

Oh yes indeed, not providing milk to people who can afford it is completely wrong isn't it! Please note my sarcasm :D

The labour run (well now its lib dem) Hull city council did the same for school meals.

I hope nobody starts a thread about having a baby, it will give you yet another opportunity to say how bad labour is :)

Would you also suggest that state funded education should be withdrawn from children whose parents can afford the alternative?

Please note I don't do sarcasm, as I prefer the higher forms of wit.:D

Re: Rewarding parents

excuse me if i am being thick but do school meals and milk not depend on income?

emzy 04-05-2008 15:46

Re: Rewarding parents

The thing is though, you cant really send a child to school with milk because it would go all warm and yucky, and milk is good for them so regardless of income, its beneficial for the child. I thought that they did still get it up until a certain age though

I know that spiderman gets free milk and fruit for a snack, but i have to give 50p every week for it.

Worth it in my opinion

some schools charge you for the free snack etc but use it towards trips and such, then you dont have to pay full whack all in one go.

How sad that yet another bunch of useless do gooders come out with a load of clap. I think it an insult to my parenting if I were to be offered money to do something that SHOULD!! come naturally to any parent.
Admittedly not all parents take time to read to thier kids but to offer them money to get them to do it is utter tosh!

What next? pay the parents for taking them to school or keeping them clean :rolleyes::mad:
