Good luck

Good luck to all the various students who are working towards or taking exams during this time. The weather is gorgeous and I know how hard it is to focus on your work when you could be out enjoying the sunshine, but there isn't too long now!

Well you aren't exactly doing a real degree are you :p What sort of politician does a politics degree? Maybe PPE but not politics alone :p Doesn't really take a degree to figure out your own political beliefs and preach them at people does it :p

My son had his first GCSE exam today - his drama practical, I went to see the play they were doing in their dress rehearsal for parents week before last so we could give feedback on any improvements they could make... seems it went well today...my youngest said the funniest bit was them getting ready as they had to be stood outside and buckets of water thrown all over them to wet them through.

They were doing the opening scenes from Nevilles Island :D

now go google :p

The downside of all the exams coming up is he's finding it really hard to sleep, any tips??

Reading before bed tends to get most people tired. I used to stay awake til I'd finished the book though so that wont necessarily work. No eating after 6.

I've lucked out this time round, put the effort in my other exams so I've got an easy run in - 5 exams - 2 on 5th June, 2 on 16th June and 1 on 20th June. Got a long time to revise and in 3 of the exams I only need half marks to come out on an overall A because I did well in AS and the first set of A level exams in January. Should comfortably come out on AAA and that'll get me into uni with a grand a year scholarship :)

Good luck then with that :) a grand a year extra will no doubt be a brilliant help, just don't spend it stupidly.

One thing I have learned at University is that A levels are suddenly irrelevant, and the people who have the 'best' or most A levels feel like they have been conned because of people like me getting into uni with rubbish grades. You meet some extremely clever people who have done rubbish at A level and some ridiculously stupid people with brilliant A level results. In other words, try not to get to uni and think your brilliant for getting 3 A's at A level, because you'll soon realise nobody cares!

What degree are you going to be doing and which Uni are you going to?

No I'm not grateful because at the time I wasn't bothered about her doing it, but I look back now and feel a bit of a liar about that maths result. I was more than capable of doing the work to the standard I achieved, but I just didn't. I don't think you should be grateful of somebody encouraging your lazy attitude to something :p

Computing for Business Applications @ University Of Manchester

And yea, I know the results aren't an accurate representation, some subjects are so much easier than others, my girlfriend is just as if not more intelligent than me however because she does maths and sciences she's going to struggle to get the 3 B's she needs where I'm walking in the 3 A's in law, psychology and computing.

SamF 11-05-2008 22:37

Re: Good luck

I really think the SATS especially in year 9 should be scrapped, the schools heap on the pressure when they do nothing what so ever for the pupils. It has a negative effect in two ways - firstly it puts the children under unnecessary stress and secondly the way schools go about it they make it seem really important, which they then repeat for 2 years for GCSEs however once the pupils realise the SATs were worthless they get the doubt of "Well are GCSEs actually that important or are they having us on again ?"

Re: Good luck

I think SAT's should NOT be scrapped because they are very important when it comes to putting students into a class that suits their ability.

I also never found mine stressful, nor did I revise for them. I don't think it is wise to practice in preparation for SAT's because it gives a bit of a false representation of what you have learned and actually focuses more on what you are capable of memorising. It's a bit like an IQ test, only accurate if not practiced for.

Of course everybody wont agree with me, and that is fair enough, but I can see the benefit of SAT's and your right to an extent Sam because I don't see the real relevance of GCSE's, mainly because you get up to this level and they are never mentioned again except in the odd conversation with friends.

I think the unnecessary stress surrounding exams cant be blamed wholly on teachers, parents often encourage the stress to in my opinion. The people who I find worry most about them are the people who's parents focus on exam results too much, and it just shouldn't be about that, and thankfully it isn't like that at uni otherwise I think I would've lost all faith in education.

There are 39 weeks in a school year. I would class it as poor teaching if they can't tell how good a child is in that time. Scrap the SATS

High school teachers teach several classes a day, it's hard to have the same relationship with the pupils there that you would have with primary school children that you teach every day, all day.

You have SATs at the end of primary school to be put into your classes at high school, then reassessed in year 9 to make sure you are in the right sets for GCSE. I don't recall anyone finding them stressful, they were just something you did. I don't recall anybody revising for them  I certainly didn't anyway.

How long have SAT's been used for this purpose? Where they used when you were at school?

Although year 6 SATS results are used to decide which set to put children in at secondary school, their main purpose is to assess the performance of the primary school.

Children tend to get very nervous about these exams and although they are told to relax it's easier said than done as it is such an intense week with lots of tests to be done.

However, if they fall to pieces on the day, don't get the results they deserve and finish up in a lower band at secondary school, the teachers will soon realise when they start secondary and see their work that they should be in a higher band and it is easily rectified.

The main thing to remember is that it is the school under examination, not the child.
