We have just had to raise our prices, it is the first increase in 8 years, and was mostly due to the cost of fuel, just before christmas, it was £73 to fill one of our vans, now it costs £95, we couldnt stand the hikes anymore without defending ourselves against what would have been substantial losses.

Gas in Kingston today is about $1.15 a litre, which is bad enough; but diesel is up around $1.30 .... when you realize that much of the stuff we buy is transported by heavy trucks, you know that the price of a lot of stuff is in for an increase.

We in little old England pay the same in pounds as you do in dollers -that makes it double give or take a bit:jimbo:

I thought increase in fuel was in order to get people to use more eco-friendly ways of travel such as public transport, walking and cycling? In Europe at least anyway. Obviously other things will cause the price increase, but this generally is why I don't care if prices increase.

Before anyone says it, no I do not drive, I am 19 and cope with all my travelling needs on foot or public transport. I know many students who do have cars who use them way too much, and would probably save a lot of money using alternative methods, chances are every single car user on accy web makes a journey in their car every now and again that they could make via alternative ways.

In Lancaster, it has absolutely AMAZED me how many cyclists there are on the roads, such a huge contrast to accrington. People even use those attachable car things on the back of their bicycles so the babies can go too... also bike schemes in every school I have seen, where there are what can only be described as 'cycling buses' I guess!? Obviously there is still congestion like any other town or city, but it just goes to show that people are at least making it a more viable option.

I see now that I am ranting, so I will be quiet haha

nope the enviroment is just an excuse to charge more for things , we have never had such large increases in fuel for example until all this lets be green bull came out of europe, the government has used global warming as an excuse to make lots of money to pay for their cock ups, if they were that bothered about global warming they would be hitting the big poluters like manufacturing plants harder , making companies use less packaging etc but its easier to hit the public

Presmably all the buses you use run on solar power. Is all the food you buy from the shops delivered by hand cart ? Fuel price increases don't just affect those who own a car.

The public transport is a good theory and it would probably suprise you how many of us motorists would love to use public transport for the daily grind of going to work, the problem is they forget to put a decent public transport system in place.

The goverment have even admitted its nothing to do with 'green'. Its a way of sucking the very life out of the electorate to fund their hair brained schemes.

e.g. only a day or so ago Gordon brown starts talking about "fixing the NHS", hang on they have had over 10 years to 'fix it'. If they haven't managed it by now having spent more on it than at ANY time in its history then they should hand it over to someone who can.

If the government put up tax on fuel to make people use public transport then they're a bit crazy. What they need to do is ensure public transport is good and cheap.

I'm not so sure it is cheaper for many people to use public transport than owning a car. It certainly isn't more reliable.

As for bikes Lancaster must have a good bike scheme. I can't say the same for Accrington or Hull. I'd feel in danger using a bike on the roads otherwise I would love to use one.

with students getting arrested under the terrorism bill, taking more people off the road, i don't see a need for fuel increases, the government should be commended for this new "Green" policy.:D

I caught the bus last week from Altham to the hare and hounds in Clayton and it cost me £1.50, it is not cheap to use public transport, it isn't cheap to drive. We get screwed over on everything in this country

The thing is that Gorden Brown does not need to implement the 2p rise in petrol prises in Sept/Oct set out in the budget. Because of the rise in petrol prises recently the revenue received has gone up sharply so no need for him to implement the defared tax, but will he, will he hell:mad:

Re: pertrol

although i pretty much despise gordon brown and his lot for what they have done i dont hear the conservitaves offering to reduce the price of petrrol/diesel to under a pound per litre where it SHOULD be and i dare say if elected they too will continue to hike up the fuel costs and blame it on the previous labour govenment just like labour blamed all their broken promises on the previous conservative govenment

all partys know damn well no one gives a toss about how much fuel they use and what effect it has on the enviroment simply because we love using our cars more than we care about the planet so they are trying to force us off the road by making it too expensive to run a car

Holy cow bananas! I've just returned from filling the car up and it was 95 squid! Hadn't realised the prices had gone up that much while I've been away. Even so, I'll only start using public transport regularly when it is direct door to door with no stops in between and a 2 minute service interval.
