Re: There's something missing here ....
In the great universal scheme of things and without sounding cold or uncaring 50,000 dead BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | China quake toll 'to top 50,000' out of a population of 1.3 billion China Population - The Population of China
works out at about .003 % of the population or thinking about it in UK terms and a population of 60 million ......its about 200 dead , probably about 1% of Brits who die each year thru infections picked up in dirty hospitals also in UK terms, abortions running at ....193,700 ( 2006 figure) is on a par to .3% of the population |

I guess there aren't a lot of us who have ties with China, and despite saying how terrible the suffering must be every time something happens in the world, there isn't much more to add. |
Re: There's something missing here ....
What has surprised me more than anything is that both China and Burma have similar regimes, yet the action taken by both governments is unbelievable, the Burmese don't seem to give a damn about the ordinary people, whereas the chinese have sent thousands of troops into the area to give as much help as posible

Re: There's something missing here ....
probably to do with the fact that china has become a world power, whereas burma is just a forbidden place? run by a secretive tin-pot dictatorship. whatever the reason, china seems to be going all-out to aid its people, unlike president bush after katerina.

Re: There's something missing here ....
I am living in China at the moment and have been impressed by the attitude of the Chinese Government in response to last Monday's earthquake. Only last month we visited Wolong Giant Panda Reserve which is located in the region affected by the quake and according to news reports much of this area has been devastated and the town has been cut-off due to rockfalls and landslides caused by aftershocks. The roads into this mountain area weren't exactly vehicle friendly during our visit, but have now disappeared altogether in some places. :sad8:
Whilst things look bleak at the moment, I suspect that the efficiency of the Chinese Government will ensure that this region (and it's survivors) receive the resources to recover and develop as swiftly as possible.:) |
Re: There's something missing here ....
Far fewer people would have died in China but for the shoddy building practices there. Also, due to China's "one child" policy, it is heartbreaking to see parents lose their only son or daughter.
