Ask them to send you a card to pay some off your future bills. Just use it when you go to the post office.

I recently discovered that my Broadband Option 2 plan was being well underused so I was able to change to Option 1 for £3 a month less. They also reduced the Option 1 fee by another £3 per month for the next 6 months because no one at BT told me that my usage was less than for Option 1 and I had been paying for Option 2. If my usage had been more than the allowance for two consecutive months they would have been in touch with me suggesting that I take on Option 3, for a higher fee of course.

Even more recently I started to get literally thousands of spam emails being returned to my mail box when I hadn’t actually sent them. In fact today they have been coming in at the rate of some 400 per hour. Unfortunately it was my primary email account so I couldn’t just dump it. In any case being the primary account and with 4 sub-accounts, dumping the primary one would have meant that the sub-accounts would also have got dumped.

BT’s answer was to suggest that I select one of my sub-accounts as a new primary account and then I could dump the old primary account and replace it with a new sub-account. The change over went smoothly without a hitch.

The best of it is, that you get 15MB of web space for each email account, so with 5 accounts I have a total of 75MB of web space – all for FREE!

Em, you have discovered the "secret" of not being prosecuted when you can't pay a bill. You contacted, straight away, and asked for time to pay.

In one of my positions in the Inland Revenue I was a Tax Collector (for about 8 years). I had to chase people who didn't pay what they owed and, if necessary, I would destrain on their goods or put them in Court. But with those who rang me as soon as they got their tax demand and asked for an arrangement it was a different matter. If they were obviously well-off I told them, in effect, to get lost but if they were genuinely struggling I would be as accomodating as I possibly could be.

Most organisations, be they Government, Utility or whatever, won't be unfavourable if you're up front with them.

Not being funny, but, how could you tell from a 'phone call if they are struggling or not? Did they fail if they have a 'plummy voice', or if they threatened to set the hounds on you?

Without further and deeper details how could you tell over the 'phone, if they where genuine about struggling or just putting it on?

Surely, the idea would be that if they had the courtesy to ring you and apologise for any delay they would be given the benefit of the doubt about being genuine until they once again failed to pay up.

To claim that you, could tell over the 'phone who is and who isn't struggling is a little too clever even for a Tax collector!

have they told you about the new offer they are offering - if you are on jobseekers allowance, income support or pension credits - they are offering your line rental at £15 a quarter instead of £30 odd plus you get £4.50 of phone calls included. The only thing is your phone calls are more expensive than normal.

I got this from my sister - she works for bt.

Well I won't get too technical but put it this way - the chap's turnover is very high and his tax return shows he has substantial bank interest. Does that sound like he's suffering financial hardship? Unsurprisingly, the ones who tried to "get away with it" often changed their minds when reminded that interest would accrue on the debt until it was paid off.
