chicks in class fall prey to red tape

a school head condemned "politically correct compensation-conscious" after a plan to hatch chicks in a classroom incubator was abandoned on HEALTH AND SAFETY GROUNDS,

Incubators require specific heating and presumably it'd need to be on all the time, and the last thing they'd want is the school burning down if something went wrong with the wiring or something. I don't think this a stupid decision personally.

Here's the link.

No doubt it would have been lovely for the children to watch the chicks hatching out but unfortunately there were too many risks involved.

Sad but true.

off the top off my head......

eggs...risk of salmonella/contamination/diseases, risk of breakage, allergies

chicks... again disease/contamination,allergies

incubator..... heat (children could burn them selves) ,over heating/fire risk

i did an activity using eggs once and the children had to wear gloves and goggles.....

your also not allowed to use toilet roll tubes for activities due to the risk of contamination.....

You must admit though, it's a little worrying that schools cant be trusted to supervise children washing their hands thoroughly. Gloves seems to be a bit OTT to me...

if your doing an activity with 30 children whats the odds of one of them putting thier fingers in their mouths?

alot of schools do get butterfly eggs that they hatch out, the children enjoy that.

I can remember having an incubator in my class at Junior School and watching the chicks hatch. It was really good to watch as well.

And no I'm not that old thank you!!

And what are the real odds of contracting salmonella? Not high if I remember rightly from reading about it a while back.

I don't understand why they can't teach them to not put their hands in their mouths at the same time, give them a lesson on food poisoning whilst theyre at it. It was never this stupid when I was at school, and I don't remember anyone getting salmonella.

totally agree , no wonder teens are rebeling and running wild , they are wrapped up in cotton wool with daft ideas like this.
Little lads are supposed to go out and climb trees and collect birds eggs , it what being a little lad is all about , I suppose collecting frogspawn in a jam jar is now frowned upon as well , as being against a frogs "human' rights

The problem is as Blazey said it is getting ridiculous. What about doing experiments in Physics that involve the use of gas and flame? The kids today don't get to experience the little joys in life because we have become to much of a claim culture. I think that is the top and bottom of it.

You correct Bernie .. cotton wool springs to mind. Remember the experiments in early Physics with the frogs .. yuk.

It is just so OTT these days let the kids be kids for goodness sake. Next they won't be able to play out at break time just in case they get hurt. Kids fall and hurt theirselves it is part of life but before long we will have claims for tumbles in the playground.

Bonnyboy 25-05-2008 22:01

Re: chicks in class fall prey to red tape

There is a risk to everything we do in life. Negate the risk so far as possible by all means, but let the task remain worthwhile.

If the kids get taught basic hygiene there should be no issues.

Next on the school uniform list will be crash hats, knee and elbow protectors for playtime or P.E. class

they dont need those things bb as all contact sports have been banned from schools, no british bull dog, you dont play tag anymore, you play cat and mouse....

Dint know that, so what happens if they want to play footy, rugby, hockey, basketball etc...do the parents have to sign a waiver or what ?????

emamum 25-05-2008 22:11

Re: chicks in class fall prey to red tape

last school i worked in only allowed football on certain days, when they had enough staff to watch them... no contact allowed and only sponge balls allowed, same with rounders and netball..... hockey, rugby and basketbell are usually played by older children and high schools have different rules than junior..

some schools play kwik cricket but think you would have to talk to linds or moon about that cos its not summat ive done

You're right, Bernadette.

The schools are so scared of being sued that they daren't do anything remotely risky, which isn't always a good thing. :(

It's such a shame.

Everything has to be assessed, approved and a parental consent form filled in before any activity. You can't just spontaneously decide to take a class to the park these days.

It's not the teachers' fault. They're as frustrated by it all as we are.

It's the world we live in. :(

Yep I know but what a sad life the kids lead. I really feel so sorry for them but on the other hand obesity is being bandied about. For goodness sake let the kids live and breath.:(

Re: chicks in class fall prey to red tape

Contact sports aren't banned by ALL schools as that is a matter of policy. The school my sister goes to still has football and tig and stuff like that.

I think it's pretty stupid, and I think a GOOD school would actually take those risks just to avoid hindering their pupils' education.

im just making a point about health and safety in schools.. you used to be able to make stuff out of toilet rolls and now you cant cos of the risk of fecal contamination
