I know a brilliant one but unfortunately he lives in France. I'd be interested in hearing of a good local one too.

Oh and THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Mani for saying "back yard door"! That's what I call ours but Busman will insist on calling it a gate. It's a 6'6" high wooden thing on hinges in frame in a high wall. It's flippin door! A gate is a wrought iron thing isn't it? Or at the very least one of them things with slats and bars. (Sorry for thread wander.)

Noooo a gate is that thing you've got at the front of your front garden.

Re: Anyone recommend a good joiner?

yeah a gate is made from iron. u wudnt go to a joiner for iron work would you?

ideally i'd like them fitted esp the back yard one as that needs a new frame too

Nay emamum.
tha should know better, its a back yard DOOR.

A gate is what used be on your frontage, from the street leading to your front door.

It seems to be that those born and bred here call it a door and the foreigners call it a gate.

Re: Anyone recommend a good joiner?

Well Busman is from southern parts so maybe that explains a lot.

Jeffs DIY at Brierfield used to do Back yard gates (sorry doors) to order and fit them don't know if they still do, but might be worth a go might even do doors as well? it is next to what used to be the Unit Four Cinema try ringing them first?:)

Re: Anyone recommend a good joiner?

After a burglary in about 1987, I had a new back yard door and a new 'storm door'(outside house back door), made and installed by Pilkington Bros, Railway Sawmills Church.
The workmanship was good but remember thinking they were a bit pricey.
The firm is still operating - might be worth getting a quote.

PS alternatively you could buy a door from a DIY store and any joiner worth his salt could resize and fit it.

Re: Anyone recommend a good joiner?

dunno where the argument is on this but a door is somthing you put on houses and a gate is what you put at the end of your drive , path or whatever

if its going in your back yard as acces between your alley and your back yard then its a back gate and if its at the front of your house going from your path , drive or whatever to the street then its a front gate

hope that made sense lol

doors are for the house , gates are for outside lol

lets just say if you rang the police and said iv just had my back door kicked in they would ask if they are in your house , if you said my back gate was kicked in they would ask if you could see if somone was in your yard

iv rang for both lol ;)

If I meant the house door I'd say 'back door' if I meant the yard door I'd day 'back yard door'. :p
