And once you have (or someone has) found a way to make parents reponsible, then we can work on making cats obey commands, square the circle, grab onto a bunch of neutrinos and travel at the speed of light etc. It's more than parenting, there has been a sea change in British society; the old values, for better or worse, are gone and there seems to be nothing to fill the vacuum ... jailing parents is a band aid solution for a problem that needs major surgery ... it's cute, but it won't work.

Anyway, jail ain't all that bad; just spent a little time there myself for defying a court order to stop blocking uranium prospecting on land claimed by the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation .... and just as a little slammer time won't stop me from standing up and being counted for what I believe in, it won't make a complete waste of skin into a responsible parent.:(

A very small percentage of kids do have behavoiual problems due to conditions like: autism, A.D.H.D, A.D.D etc. These conditions cause the child to ehibit problems similar to kids with bad parents but should not be confused as ongoing research shows that their are biological causes

agree completely... autism used to be blamed on 'refridgerator mothers' because it was thought to be caused by mothers that werent loving towards their children.

it may well be a small percentage nationally, but its a large one in me late wifes family e.g. 2 out of 3 kids who are now grown, n the ongoing research which is great, will NOT re-open the special places they have closed down along with other cutbacks.:(

Do food additives not play a part in the increase of these problems? This is a genuine question because I have read in various places that food additives are a big concern in the increase of reported cases of ADHD and so forth. These conditions were never mentioned when my kids were young as far as I can remember thus making me think that either they are on the increase or more widely recognised.

from what i know bernie food additives have been known about fer last 25 yrs or so, in the early days some recognised the fact, some did not, i say that with the differing experiances of the 2 mothers.;)

I think it is because theyve become more widely recognised by the doctors and nurses and due to kids doing something criminal then being diagnosed with it that its become more and more recognisable.

Thanks for that Cashy, makes you wonder how much of it is down to food additives. Before you all jump on the fact that you think I am dissing the kids have got these conditions I am just wondering how food additives may have added to the problem.

Just to cover some of the points raised here, but in relation to our kids, I work 6 days, partner works 5, though I know some people have a full time job which pays very well and is more like part time hours, our life isnt like that, also, the 2 children who are 'problematic', have seen doctors, psychologists etc, and have no autism, adhd or anything else wrong with them, they are loved and cared for and have plenty to occupy them both with us and on thier own, there has even been a suggestion that they should be outside more, as we are having numerous works done outside, the garden is not an option at the minute, and I refuse to allow them out on the street as many parents around here do.
