Who gets your vote for the next president

bit of a straw poll , but which of the two candidates , Obama or McCain would get your vote if you had a chance to vote for the next US president .
Bearing in mind no decisions have yet been made for the #2 slot as vice-President , and being a realist one has to consider a couple of facts ,
#1, that McCain is the oldest candidate ever to run and may not last another 4 years and #2 , Obama is going to be in the gun-sights of every wacko out there. So the choice of running mate is very important

Hard one to call.Obama may need Clinton as a running partner, but then she comes with her husband as a team.(Is America going to vote for a black president?)and can Obama tame his running team? They may well take the safer route.I just wish we could have a news blackout for a few weeks.Heard McCains speach tonight and he seams very sincere and honest.(don't they all)Ah well time will tell.Dying to say Obama between two Clintons would look like a liqurice allsort but i won't:gooddog:

Don't know much about American politics, so I tend to go on personalities, and Barack seems like a breath of fresh air to me, compared to McCain who seems tired and old. However, I'm sure Barb and LYL will be along presently to tell me why I'm wrong! :D

Re: Who gets your vote for the next president

I believe McCain would take America backwards in many respects. What am I saying? it can't really go much further back from 'Bushland, Invaders from the West' can it?! Well, I don't believe he'd make things better for the American people or regain a good reputation for Americans across the globe. McCain seems too fixated on the war in Iraq and I don't think he would address essential issues on home soil that need serious review such as health care. Either that or he'll cop it after a few months in office.

I've followed Obama all through the primaries and heard his speech last night (BBC World News America is essential viewing for insomniacs such as I) and he seems to have learned a lot over the journey to being democratic nominee. I'm not sure he's experienced enough to run the country but it's not like he'll be doing it alone.

I do however think a smaller government is needed in your country steeljack and so in that respect I don't think McCain should be written off.

You'll know best, you live there! Who are you gunning for steeljack?

True. If, by some curious fluke this man is elected the next President of the USA, it will be the end of western civilisation as we know it.

He has the makings of a great orator, and gives rousing speeches, but saying that so did Hitler.

There seems little real policy behind all the eloquence.

Me too ... and I can't put my finger on what it is ...

If I were American I would vote McCain; I admire the guy, even tho I don't agree with all of what he says. ... the Democratic primaries have been very interesting ... well interesting in the sense that it is fascinating to watch a major political party commiting suicide in public. However, if the Democrats lose the election, they can perhaps console themselves with the argument that the US is in such a mess after the Bush fiasco, that it is not a good time to be in power.

Whoever takes over from Bush will be picking up a poisoned chalice even if his party gains control of both houses.

But on balance I think that Obama should get the job and hopefully his party gains control of both houses. But I don’t think that he should take Hilary as his running mate. She comes with a load of baggage in the name of hubby.

I read somewhere that she might be willing to run with Obama but only if Bill “I did not have sex with that woman” Clinton gets a top job.

The Clintons are a powerful political family and with Hilary as number two and hubby in a top job they would undoubtedly try and manoeuvre Obama into doing what they want and would probably succeed too.

interesting reply , perhaps in your wisdom you know of such a place ..a Shangri-la, an Eden on Earth , a place where everyone eats chocolate eclairs all day without getting fat and little children with rosy cheeks play in the fields all day with little lambs and butterflies . Please do tell us , we really do want to know, from where we could perhaps go in with guns blazing (we like guns , they go "bang bang" ) and kidnap someone civilized to be our next President

I voted Obama, he can't be any lamer than the last few .
I read a lot of biographies and if they are to be believed JFK would have been the greatest President; he was a mould breaker and a man unafraid of challenges, I see some of that in Obama and hope he is strong enough to stand his corner and be the President the USA deserves.

No but in all seriousness, I think America needs a change, and take a few risks once in a while too, and whilst there are going to be people who are against Obama, I like the idea of a change of character as president, and he looks alright. I like the bone structure in his face.

Re: Who gets your vote for the next president

The post which said 'in all seriousness' was serious in regards to the comments on Obama and a coloured man being president. I don't see what is drivel about that, but I also don't care either.

I haven't been following the American politics because quite frankly there is enough to be concerned with at the moment in our own system without caring about the Americans and their next leader. I just like Obama from what I have seen, and judging from the poll I am not alone in this so why should I be accused of it being a wind up?

Obviously my first sentence was a wind up, I wouldn't pick a politician based on race, gender or religion or anything else, was just having a laugh. Regardless of whether you laughed or not, I found it funny at the time and obviously find it funny that I received such a tense response to it, although it was I must admit unexpected as I made it so blatantly obvious as a joke that I didnt expect someone to try having a go at me for it.

Re: Who gets your vote for the next president

Its in times like this that despite the anti-political sentiment voiced in forums such as this that we see that interest in politics is far from dead. People have a vested interest in those that control our lives and there can be no more influential a post than the President of The United States.

Ive studied American Politics and been a keen observer for many years and I defy anyone to predict how this one will go.

Americans tend to vote for heros, war veterans and those 'Old American Boys' who've served. Some would call them an insecure electorate, uncertain of their own standing in the world and even unsure of their own national identity. To a degree this may be true and in such circumstances there can be no better time for someone Like Sen Obama to seize the reigns of power.

Obama is the choice of the heart, Clinton would have been the choice of the brain and its clear from the current feeling in America that in terms Democratic Party politics, the heart won this battle. He needs to come into his own now - anyone can sell stories of a great America, of change, of freedom and position themsevles as the catalyst for all those things, but so far he simply hasnt said anything and has got through by being new and putting on a good show. We'll see now if the US electorate have been paying attention.

McCain is a savvy politician, worldly wise and has been there, done it, got the t-shirt. He has plenty of friends on 'the Hill' and is a gifted public speaker who has laced his addresses with both rhetoric and substance. His age lets him down but dont underestimate the appeal of a steady hand in the current economic and political climate.

If I were to stick my neck on the line, my heart would go for Obama, but this will be a battle of the heart and the brain of the American people.

Sometimes questions arise that need you to think 'out of the box'

To me America stereotypes all that is wrong in the world. They just don't seem to be able to organise themselves without exerting excessive aggression amongst themselves and others. Unfortunately I think we are following them.

Perhaps it is because it is too large a country the Roman empire went much the same wan and many of their leaders were at best corrupt at worst indifferent to the majority

To be honest I don't know his parentage to refer to him as a black man. He could be black-american, black-african etc etc etc. He's just got coloured skin that isn't white, therefore I refer to him as coloured.

Things should only be offensive in my opinion if they are said in malice.

The part upto where I said 'in all seriousness' is 'drivel' as you put it, because it was said in humour. The rest I meant based on an opinion as Mike would refer to 'from the heart'. I don't know american politics enough to give a well rounded opinion from heart and mind. Difference is that I'm not pretending to be able to.

I've just been reading http://cleantechnica.com/2008/06/05/...il-dependence/

I wonder if Obama is aware that using food as fuel will lead to massive price inflations on food all over the world, most negatively affecting those who have the least. I wonder if he has realised that the price of biofuels has risen in line with petrol, because whatever price petrol is, if biofuels remain lower they will always remain competative. Theres always going to be supply & demand problems here because it takes so much land to generate the crops when you want to use them to run cars.

isnt it strange that as soon as you type the words coloured or black you find yourself on the defensive no matter how innocently you use the words ,we are programed by the minority of the country to the extent where we find ourselves questioning oursleves if it is worth the backlash from the minority yet very extreem PC brigade or having to justify using the words

We use the term black within 'black and minority ethnic officer' here at that place I study 50 miles away from accrington, nobody finds that offensive. It is just when terms are used in a malicious context like I said.

Just to clarify, I believe Obama's mom is white and his father was from Kenya.

Although McCain is a bit more liberal then myself, I have hoped he'd gain the nomination almost a year ago. I didn't think he had much of a chance against Romney or Guiliani.

I value his experience, his wisdom, and political savvy. He has always been a Maverick (not always towing the Republican line) which I respect him for.

Obama is certainly the main stream media's golden child in this election. He has had a number of gaffs, incorrect summations, and shady dealings that have been glossed over by our press (IMO).

We shall see. I do so hope that he (Obama is not swayed to bring the Billary show to the Vice-Presidency. IMO, those two need to find that slimy rock they came from, bring their truckload of skeletons, and be heard no more from!

For those of you who think Senator McCain is too old......you obviously haven't seen his mother, Roberta. She is 96 years old, very fit and sharp as a tack. She has been out on the campaign trail with him on numerous occasions and interviewed on t.v. I think he's got the genes to do the job.

Senator Obama will be the closest thing to a Marxist that we've ever had as a presidential candidate. He has had a lifelong love affair with Marxism - and has written about it. He always gravitated to student groups and professors of like mind when he was at university and continued to consort with others of this ilk as an adult. He has associated with some very interesting characters. Communists, Marxists, anti-Americans, black racists and even a domestic terrorist by the name of Bill Ayers. There is nothing in his rhetoric of "change" and "hope" that is new. It's all a throwback to the radicalism of the 1960's. He merely wants to throw even more good money after bad at all of these failed liberal policies. By the way, he isn't a Muslim - although his father's family is.

I think it's clear that the Democrat party would prefer to see the Clintons ride off into the sunset. As I have mentioned on other threads, Bill Clinton was never as popular here as he was, (and perhaps still is), on your side of the pond. We shall see if the VP slot is offered to Hillary Clinton. I would be very surprised if that were to happen.

All in all, I would vote, "None of the above." But I know I am going to have to make a decision by November. In the meantime, I am going to sit back, watch the fun and pass the popcorn.

seems the left of center 'media' have decided that Obama is not African-American (too many bad connotations) but is Bi-Racial (sounds of the coca cola childrens choir singing Kumbya in the background). All this is just public manipulation and spin which would make Dr. Goebbels proud .
Re. Bullseyebarb 's comments about him being a Marxist is also a bit strong , anyone who wants to normalize relations with Cuba gets points from me , and why the US has to be Israels bitch on foriegn policy is beyond me , all countries in that region of the world should be treated the same (maybe it has something to do with over 10% of the US congress being entitled to duel citizenship) seem to remember that when I became a US citizen I had to take an oath denying all foriegn Govt.s

OK Garinda,

this actually works to my advantage. No human is purely white, but most 'white' people are pale, and as we associate everything with a colour, we choose the nearest one, in accordance with our race, white. I suppose we could choose pink, or whatever, but we don't for whatever reason. I actually think of my own skin colour as light tanned but unfortunately everything formal refers to our race as white.

I didn't know his heritage or the way he refers to himself, therefore the way best for me to describe him is as a coloured man. It would be worse for me to refer to him as a black man if he himself does not necessarily refer to him in such a way, like assuming someone is chinese when they are actually japanese for example.

I am also quite capable of using google, and I am also educated enough to know how to use the English language without having the PC brigade on my heels telling me what is right and wrong, when I was clever using the words in a friendly context that doesn't even require your input, nor do I feel you even have the right to comment on such a thing when it isn't even an issue.

Not to mention that by your theory, obama isn't black either :S

And because I have nothing better to do, I viewed the pictures of myself and obama in paint and found that I can find a lot of white in my own picture, along with peachy colours, where as obama's is many shades of brown.

If you ever manage to find yourself in court and use the term 'coloured' it will be deemed offensive by those in the legal system with a little more experience of life than yourself.

I know America have come a long way since Martin Luther King jr. made the I have a dream speach in 1968, but have they come fare enough to elect an Afro American president, I don't know. The Americn people have not made the same strides in race relations as we have in this country, there are still a lot of white supremacy groups in the sates, and they still get away with things over the pond that we would be slated for over here and indeed prosecuted, but I supose only time will tell

I see, well it isn't offensive because I can't comprehend it, so I don't really give a damn lol.

My boyfriend is running for race relations officer :) we're both very anti-racism. Lots of fun. I nearly got arrested for my strong views against racism, but fortunately I do actually know the law so I covered my own back just about, but it is one of those issues I feel very strongly about. If I had known Obama's heritage I woul not hesitate to refer to him as black or whatever, but I don't, therefore I refered to him as coloured. I haven't ever heard anyone rant about the use of the word coloured, but perhaps I am not associating myself enough with the PC brigade.

A member of the lesbian and gay society, a boyfriend running for the race relation officer, not knowing that because of it's links to apatheid etc, that the term colored is deemed offensive, not knowing that Barack Obama refers to himself as black, as does the rest of the world's media, my what a sheltered life you lead.

Good luck with your exams. I hope nothing comes up that requires any logic, or a smattering of knowledge about world affairs.

I study English law, why would I know, or need to know about American politics?

The term 'coloured' hasn't ALWAYS been deemed offensive, in fact it has been used in many laws, though fair enough in countries with strong divides of the races and lots of issues with racism, but all the same it HAS been used in laws, so I don't particularly worry about using such a term.

As long as neither candidate declares themselves as an atheist, then it should be a close run thing. Apparently that's the one thing (above gender, sexuality, race, etc) that is sure to turn off the voters in America.

One thing going against Obama is the fact that it sounds a little like Osama. :D

I didn't say that he was a Marxist - I said he was the closest thing to a Marxist that we have ever had running for our Republic's highest office. When he speaks, I hear Karl Marx's, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." No, the senator doesn't give us the actual quote....rather, his version of same.

Why wouldn't we support Israel? The only full fledged democracy in the Middle East. And they will no doubt do us a great favor by curbing the Iranian nuclear threat.

We can certainly debate the Cuba issue. However, I still think Obama's foreign policy is naive.

To clarify about Obama's race - he is most definitely NOT black.

To say Barack Obama is black is making total disregard of his white mother who gave birth to him and raised him. He is of mixed race and should be proud to say so. The song recently released by rapper Nas ('Black Pesident' - hoping for Obama to be the first black president), therefore, is erroneous.

Bring on the very first bi-racial President of the United States.

Well he certainly sees himself as being black.

From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela.'

That's all very well but it's quite irrelevant really. Biologically speaking, Obama is not a black person. He may identify with heroes from one side of his ancestry but it does not change his DNA.

I think you'll find there are very few people in the States who identify themselves as black, who have a pure strain of sub-Saharan D.N.A.

Just as most people who think of themselves as white don't have purely Anglo-Saxon heritage, as was shown in the television programme So You Think You're English?
