Who buy's stolen metal?

Over the years I have had friends in the scrap metal business.
Lol Eddleston from Ossy, Frank Barnes from Darwen, Ted Lethbridge from Blackburn and Len Nield, also from Blackburn.
All registered with the council as legitimate scrap dealers.
Every transaction, buying or selling of scrap has to be recorded.
None of these lads would accept any scrap from anyone who they did not know, or could not give an authentic place of residence or place of business.
Dedicated police officers would visit their yards 2 or sometimes 3 times a week to check the register to see that the procedures were carried out and that no renegade buyers or sellers were bucking the system.
Someone, somewhere, seems to have found a solution to get round the system and appear to be 'travelling' the UK on smash and grab asignments, probably 'weighing in' in a field or caravan somewhere?
I feel Customs must be on the case............watch this space.

Who are?........I am not being clever......they are not allowed to collect scrap metal unless they are a registered dealer and that is my point.

Actually, i haven't heard them for about 2 weeks, maybe they have given up.

Seen the police staging as metal thieves in programmes on the telly and seems SOME scrap dealers aren't to fussy these days and will buy off anyone

Every day I get a visit from young men usually in flat bed transit vans, they are usually head down in the skip outside my factory. They remove anything of value usually metal objects, they visit every skip on our industrial estate and then disapear to the local scrap yards for their days graft.
I have no objection because it keeps my waste costs down !

If they can make a living out of the skip.....why dont you?
If I'ts of value put it in a box and weigh it in yourself?

I've got a leaflet in front of me which was pushed through the door offering to "clean your house from all types of scrap metal for free". There is a mobile phone number on it and they say they'll collect from 8am to 9pm.

As long as they don't return after 9pm for my boiler....:D

The only quick link to scrap metal dealers is this one from Southampton.
This applies to the whole of the UK.

my rubbish has been waiting 6 weeks for the council to collect it and i have had 2 break in attempts due to my gate been unlocked waiting for them

i cant believe somone has been so petty as to complain about somone earning a few extra quid doing a job that the council are useless at and actualy get paid for,as long as a person isnt stealing the metal they can do what the hell they like with it as far as im concerned

as for whos buying it

scrap yards are buying it dont you think with all the years of trading in the scrap metal buisness they know how to work around the rules

yup i know that why i said as long as they arnt stealing it lol

i have nothing against anyone who knocks on a door and asks if its ok to take somones scrap away or drives around taking away broken washing machines dumped on back alleys because HBC cant get their fingers out their bums and collect rubbish in an acceptable time period

any scap yard found to have a stockpile of manhole covers for example shoud be shut down for handleing stolen goods

Re: Who buy's stolen metal?

Just noticed that a man from Whinney Hill (caravan park?) is named in this report about caravan thefts
http://www.lancashireeveningtelegrap...van_thefts.php
They are targetting any metal they can get their hands on.

I have been kept awake by the sound of an angle grinder (metal cutter) - they really are going for big stuff now - see thread 'Its out again'

But they only want the metal. They remove all the other parts and dump them at the side of the road somewhere and just sell the scrap metal.

Re: Who buy's stolen metal?

We sell our scrap to local yards, anything copper, brass or lead will be paid for, they dont pay out for iron or steel (often wondered how they make money out of the bits of tin they pick up), that is collected from our works, and have them round our house regularly asking about scrap, the downside is, if you dont answer, or arnt in, they will take what they were going to ask for anyway, they steal as much as they ask for.

Re: Who buy's stolen metal?

We had a fridge in our backyard...waiting collection by the council...we came home from shopping and it was gone. A couple of days later the council wagon came to pick it up.
My next door neighbour did challenge the two men who took the fridge(on their flatback wagon)...they said they were working under contract to the council(the lying scum).

Cashy I know where you are coming from.....A yard foreman was found to be breaking the rules and lining his pockets at the same time.....He was given his marching orders as soon as it was discovered.....The boss was hardly on the premises at that time and his trusted aide let him down.
At that time my wife and I went out maybe two or three times a week with him and his wife.....I would not fault this man in any way, shape or form..........I have never heard a bad word said about him...He was a gentleman.....Sadly no longer with us.
