Amy Winehouse

Its been revealed that Amy Winehouse is suffering from the lung disease emphysema, she 24 years old and she has that. Even so she's still smoking, not much chance of her living to a ripe old age, what with drugs and booze as well, the mind boggles:eek:

She may be a bit on the weird side but her album Back To Black is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I would say smoking is the least of her worries.

But that then depends on what she is smoking.

I feel they should just leave her alone let her get on with killing herself or whatever she wants to do.

Her dad was on the radio today saying that she is still playing at Glastonbury, and Nelson Mandela's birthday bash this weekend.

It's probably not emphysema, but too much hairspray on her lungs.:D

Well I can't say I don't agree with both you and Mr D, beechy, when people keep getting warnings and they don't take any notice they only have themselves to blame. When I was told to cut down on fags 30 years ago, I didn't cut down a kicked it all together, if I hadn't I wouldn't be here today

Unlike Sir Mick, Sir Elton, and Sir Paul.

You'd never find them setting the young people a bad example by taking illegal drugs.;)

Just as many drug users have been inspirational, some people have been inspirational just because of the effects their drug use has had on their work.

I love Amy Winehouse, I think she is fantastic and I hope she makes the right decisions and gets better.

Well if she kills herself, she will become imortal, Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Cobain......
I like her music, maybe she could show the yoof of today how stupid smoking is, maybe they would listen..oh then again maybe not.
My Granddad had emphysema, its a nasty way to go. In his youth he was the Welsh Diving Champion, used to swim round Colwyn Bay every morning, PT instructor in the Army, swan some of the channel to get a boat for his men, when stuck at Dunkirk, but most of all use to be able to walk down stairs one is hands, when I was a young nipper, then it hit him, he quited smoking and started to decline. Horrid way to die.

In the light of release of preliminary toxicology reports it would appear illegal drugs didn't kill Amy Winehouse. But she did see a Doctor the eve of her death so perhaps she got some prescription drugs such as Valium and Sleeping pills?

If drugs didn't kill Amy Winehouse, what did? - The Week

I wonder if she stopped breathing in her sleep?

1. Emphysema
Back in 2008, Winehouse's father, Mitch, revealed that his daughter had been diagnosed with early-stage emphysema, says Amina Khan at the Los Angeles Times — "a rare disease in the twenty-something set," likely caused by the singer's habit of smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes. Doctors advised her that the condition could be fatal, especially if she continued her dangerous lifestyle. At the time, Winehouse's father also said that she suffered from an irregular heartbeat. It's possible the combination of the two ailments killed Winehouse.

2. Bulimia
The singer struggled with chronic eating disorders, says Zara Bokhari at the International Business Times, and dramatic weight loss before her death suggests that she may have been battling bulimia again. "We may be dealing with a [death caused by] dehydration," says forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, as quoted by ABC News. Emaciation can throw off a bulimia sufferer's "metabolic fluid balance and electrolytes."

3. Alcohol withdrawal
The theory that Winehouse died as a result of detoxing from alcohol too quickly still has merit, hazards Khan. Health experts say that quitting cold turkey without medical counsel could cause a stroke or heart attack in anyone dependent on booze. Even though alcohol was detected in her system, perhaps it was "too little." I don't see it, says addiction specialist Jeremy Clitherow, as quoted by the Chicago Tribune. "It is very unusual to die from alcohol withdrawal... you can get delirium tremens (DTs), but normally you survive."

4. Prescription drugs
We may not be getting the whole story, says Eric Zorn at the Chicago Tribune. When Winehouse's family revealed the details of the toxicology report, they specified only that no illegal drugs were found in her system. This opens up the possibility that legal substances were involved, says Wecht. "Most drug deaths are from legally obtained drugs." Furthermore, says toxicology professor Bruce A. Goldberger, prescription drugs and "designer" drugs often escape detection in these reports.

The reason I was surprised on hearing she had emphysema, is although I suffer from Advance COPD, I don't have emphysema

What is advanced COPD? Her illness was caused by excessive smoking of crack cocaine and cigarettes which suggests she physically aged prematurely.
