respect for someone

amazing how you can suddenly find respect for someone that you thought you would hate

Marco pierre White

Watching his program and I though I'd hate him. OK, he's pretentious but I actually agree with almost everything he has said tonight

Rabbit - yum
Pork belly - cheap and delicious
fish pie - yep
rhubarb - I'm with you
Fish and chips in Scarborough - delicious and romantic.

proper food irrespective of how much it costs and none of this it has to be organic expensive crap.

It also surprised me to know that 7 out of 8 native pig breeds are in danger of extinction.

get buying that piggy!!!!!

:D

Dint watch the prog. It came over in the trailers that it was going to have a real patriotic flavour. Was that the case ?

Re: respect for someone

its about food, UK centric food but generally about how we no longer use good old fashioned foods

scarborough is romantic,

2 and a half months ago I was there with Julie and Siobhan, walking on the beach(which was very clean), donkey rides, food in a number of VERY nice(cheap) restaurants, putting 2p's in 2p sweepers and generally having a lovely family time, if you can't make it romantic then your with the wrong person or you aren't romantic full stop. Too many people thnk you can only holiday abroad nowadays. Romance is about being with the person(s) you love and enjoying teh simple things in life, food, family, and unstressed time together.

Spug was watching it too ....

Said the food critics were looking continental

Entwisi spug agrees with everything you say!!!!

I couldn't agree more about enjoying the simple things and being with people you love.

Apart from our honeymoon 9 years ago we have never holidayed abroad so I know what a good family time can be had in our own country.

You could make picking up dog poo romantic if that's what floats your boat and you're with the right person etc.:D

I would use many adjectives to describe fish and chips in Scarborough but I wouldn't say it's romantic for me that's all.

If that's what does it for you though good on you. You sound like a lovely family man. Your wife could do a lot worse. :p:D

What a lovely post Entwisi and a true insight into what a lovely family you are.

Re: respect for someone

What's he saying that TV chefs haven't already said? Fish pie, fish and chips - hasn't Rick Stein been promoting this kind of thing for years? Pork belly and rabbit - Gary Rhodes has been pushing local produce such as this on a regular basis. Rhubarb? Virtually every chef is pushing rhubarb dishes at the moment.

To me this programme is yet another lazy ITV effort that is merely going with the popular flow and it's nothing to get excited about.

entwisi 03-07-2008 06:57

Re: respect for someone

I didn't say its original, just that its good to hear them actually using teh cheap cuts that people have forgotten about.

How many people on here have bought pork belly in teh last 6 months? I can hold my hand up but how many others.....

the same with rabbit, you can't even buy it in accy any more you have to go to Bury for it

MikeSz 03-07-2008 07:04

Re: respect for someone

I like pheasant. See a load of them over the trof of bowland - you have to be careful to clip them just right, otherwise, you end up running them over and you cant do much with that

entwisi 03-07-2008 07:24

Re: respect for someone

a nice stew? it should be nicely tenderised if its been squashed! :D

I must admit to having been hit a couple of times whilst 'making progress' on my bike through teh Trough, never stopped and picked it up though!

MikeSz 03-07-2008 07:29

Re: respect for someone

I was actually joking - I've never hit one (though that, on occasion, has not been for lack of trying :D )

You can get plenty of good game meat in Clitheroe though unfortunately its expensive - cant beat a bit of pan-fried medalions of pheasant in port and cranberry :) - I like to put them with honey roasted parsnips - add a bit of rosemary to them as well and you're all set.

Re: respect for someone

I was once given a pheasant which had been killed by a car.
The bird appeared intact, and I thought 'no gunshot to get out - good'
BUT - when gutting it I found that its internal organs were ruptured and the innards were putrifying jelly.
The smell was horrendous - Hughie
It went straight in the bin.

Re: respect for someone

I know this thread is meant to be about food - but Scarborough is lovely for a family holiday. We've had many a great time there without spending a fortune. The beach is perfect for children and the scenery with the two bays and headlands is very picturesque. Travel a bit further afield and you've got lots of interest including Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby.

entwisi 03-07-2008 07:38

Re: respect for someone

game is not that expensive because you don't need much of it. i.e. you can eat a 10 oz steak quite easily but 10 oz of pheasant is not teh same.

Willow, it is lovely, sort of Blackpool without the tat and drunks :D

emamum 03-07-2008 08:58

Re: respect for someone

I love scarborough............its makes me think of days out with my dad....its like blackpool(and i love blackpool as well) but without the dirt and the cheesyness...

I think it could be romantic as well........in fact, thinking about it now and the memory has the 'haze' (i dont know how to explain it, does anyone know what i mean?)

back to food lol... ive never bought pork belly, rabbit or pheasant..... but might look into cost and reciepes ( i bet i have one somewhere in my cookery book collection lol)

jaysay 03-07-2008 09:17

Re: respect for someone

You can't beat fish and chips, in newspaper (but thats not aloud these days elf and safety) Never had Pheasant, or rabbit, but when you think about what you had for tea when you were kids, Potato pie with home made crust, home made Meat Pie, Steak puddng int rag, Rice Pud, Sunday Roast. Now its Pizza, Chop Suey, Tikka Masala, Rogan Josh, all very nice, but give me the olden days anytime;)

entwisi 03-07-2008 09:43

Re: respect for someone

Emamum, just buy youur pork belly( one whole piece if possible), run a little oil in teh skin and sprinkle with salt, roast in a reasoanbly hot oven for 30 mins or so. If you liek it sweet, Marco was brushing it with some honey he had reduced with coriander seeds and star anise. Personally I like it as it comes :D

Breast of lamb is another cut that people don't use much. Its full of flavour and just grilled for 20 mins is a superb supper!

mustard seeds in the honey glaze is quite nice too.

Spugs making me salmon when he comes down.... he said so last night. Watching that last night has made him nostalgic .. can see it now because i said ive never had rabbit that he'll make rabbit one night. He's taking over the cooking.

Re: respect for someone

During wartime food rationing my dad went rabbiting (in the days before myxamatosis), ....and caught trout in Threebrooks mill lodge.....
all to supplement meagre food rations. We also kept chickens in a terraced house back yard

Pigeon pie is made with Wood Pigeons, unless you want a quick meal.
Then you'd need Racing Pigeon:D

I know but it's just the sight of these manky ferral creatures that's a bit offputting.

Very witty. Have some karma. :D

I dont think wood pigeons look anywhere near as bad as some of their common relatives. A wood pigeon dont forget is quite a large bird, its a log bigger than a normal pigeon and they dont tend to look as scruffy

Re: respect for someone

my dad used to shoot pigeons for a siekh(sp?) family who used to work at Brockhall who always cooked them and ate them...not my cup of tea though
