German Measles party!

Siobhans got the good old German Measles.

If you want to get your kid infected feel free to pop round and let them play with her!

Some people like the idea of getting it all out the way before school starts so they are less likely to miss school due to these moments in life.

erm.... no thanks lol

Have you told nursery/playgroup or anywhere she goes to? German measles is and infectious disease and may need reporting to RIDDOR ....parents of any other children she has been in contact with will need to know (and any pregnant women)

Re: German Measles party!

yep, told them this morning. TBH I reckon she caught it there! :D

i reckon you are doing right Ian, i wish Reece had had them already, it would have been better for him to get them at a younger age than at the age he is now

Re: German Measles party!

When I was a small child, before the NHS got off the ground, it was quite normal for mothers to send their children round to play with a child who had one of the childhood diseases - german measles, chickenpox etc. Most of those illnesses were less severe in younger children than when they were older and it got them out of the way before school. That way also gave the child a natural immunity to the diseases without the putative risks, today, of innoculation.

Right, form an orderly queue and get your children round to Entwisi's. He can supply the jelly and ice cream. :)

Don't think too serious even when older Flashy .. chickenpox can be though, hate to bring up MMR, but did he not have these injections ? You can do a Tony Blair if you do not wish to answer this.

Well, would have included the Rubella I would imagine, so he will be immune.

i may be wrong here but i thought that they could still get the infection if they have had the injections, but just not an extreme case of it?

like i said, i may be wrong

QUESTION:
I have heard that some people get diseases that they have been vaccinated against. How could this be true?
ANSWER:
Modern vaccines are extremely effective, but are not perfect. For example, a vaccine that is 90% effective means that one in every ten people who is vaccinated is not fully protected from the disease. Should disease affect a community, those that are unprotected are likely to be infected - which includes those who were not vaccinated and the 10% of people who were vaccinated but for whom the vaccine didn't work. The 10% for whom the vaccine did not work may still have partial immunity; if infected, these individuals may experience a milder form of the disease. Because most diseases that vaccines prevent are transmitted from person-to-person, the more people in a community who are immunized, the less likely that disease will be transmitted and "find" the few that are unprotected.

Most vaccines require more than one dose to reach maximum immunity. Some, like tetanus and diphtheria, require booster doses every 10 years throughout life to continue that immunity.

Re: German Measles party!

Also, was once told by my doctor, when son had a rash, and suggested could be German Measles, he shrugged this off as had the full MMR. Explained that their are lots of mild conditions that emulate German Measles, and that is why some parents may think they have got a dose.

Thing is has been completely elimated in lots of countries due to everyone having it. Sorry, to bring this subject up again, but somebody would have done sooner or later ... :o

I've had Rubella Entwisi, or would have been up for the goodies.. :D

Has she not had her second though, usually at about 36 months .. so this could be the reason.

I had german measles has a kid:rolleyes:

Also cough or sneeze of an infected person can spread the disease, so they really can get it from anyone who is walking about and spluttering.

Flashy why would ya rather have ya son get measles now rather than in adulthood?
its only risky to pregnant women, I wouldnt have thought adult men would suffer worse.

I got chicken pox when I was about 15, didn't really bother me that much though, just meant I couldn't really go out without looking like I had some sort of plague. It wasn't even that itchy. I really wondered what all the fuss was about.

I had the injections against German measles as a child but still caught it (them?) - they asked me when I first got pregnant if I'd had the injections and I said "yes and the disease!" and they looked at me like I was talking rubbish.

Confused a little Willow, the MMR (which included the Rubella vaccination for the first time) was not brought in until 1972, would you not be 19 then ? Maybe that's why they were a little puzzled ?

The second jab is usually between 3 and 5 yrs. We are waiting for an appointment to come through for Siobhan's, but that could take time as a friend of mine's little girl didn't get hers through until she was 5yrs, despite her mother requesting it on several occasions.

The doctor did advise us that even though a child has had the jab, they can still get a mild dose,

Hope she's OK Buttonsmum .. not too bad though is it.

5 years .. what's going on then ? Pretty sure there is not a shortage ? Sounds like shortage of appointment time to me.

P.S. Have been nosing at yer Flickr pictures .. some lovely shots of Siobhan there ... better not take a photo' at the moment though .. LOL

I thought the MMR was brought in in 1988! Didn't they used to do seperate ones prior to that? I had something anyway!! :D

Well, the vaccine was not licensed until 1969 .. but not incorporated into the MMR until '72 (when they started the Nationwide programme .. not sure Willow) . I know my daughter born in '65 never had it, but certainly son born in '82 did.

Whats the rule about when she can go back to nursery? I know they are contageous for 2 weeks before the spots come out, is it 1 week from appearence or longer?

Re: German Measles party!

With chicken pox, my likkle fella wasnt allowed anywhere till the last of the spots had blistered. He had one on his finger that was a couple of days behind the rest. Was debating amputaion by this point lol.

Have you tried Anti-histimines as well?? I used the liquid form and it was fab for getting rid of the itching? Might be worth a do?

best to ask nursery, depends what their policy on infections........They will probably ask for her to stay off longer to be on the safe side.......Saying that, all the other kid will have already been in contactwith her before you knew about it..

according to NHS direct you are contagious till 5 days after the rash appears..

Ian - i cant remember off hand - best to give them a ring - do the staff know because a member of staff working around Siobhan is expecting?

Re: German Measles party!

I rang up on the morning to say we suspected, rang again when we came out and I confirmed again in the afternoon so yep we've done our bit!

TBH I reckon she picked it up there and unprompted said a little boy had spots last week. Its not an issue and TBH I'm happy she has had it before she starts proper school, we only have normal measles left on teh ticklist of illnesses youu must have! :D
