Re: NHS report

Two weeks ago I attended an operating unit in Preston to have a cataract removed.
The operating staff were from a private set up called Netcare.
The procedure from start to finish, walking in to walking out, was exactly two hours.
When the operation was finished I was offered a cup of tea, as was my wife and medication for after care for one month.
I was seen by three doctors in that short period and can not fault the system whatsoever.
The following morning I received a phone call from a nurse on behalf of netcare to see if everything was all right and who was putting the eyedrops into my eye 4 times a day, when told it would be my wife she was quite satisfied.
Netcare is paid by the NHS...I qualify for this treatment as the initial diagnosis was made prior to me moving to Spain and is recognised as ongoing to conclusion.
As a pensioner I qualify for free medical treatment in Spain.
I have put this rider on because some anon clown gave me a red and said "I would soon be running back to the UK if I needed the NHS"

John I'm sorry I didn't know you had been in Hospital....All the best Pal.

Thanks Roy. I have to say that I had both cararacts done in 2003 at BRI and both my Ops were performed exactly as Roy described to the letter, pre, during and after care, including the home phone call. In all the medical side of the NHS is very good, its when things are taken out of the hands of the clinitians and targets have to be achieved where the problems start. It is hardly any wonder that that doctors and nurses get so frustrated having decisions taken out of their hands by pen pushers

Re: NHS report

The NHS is too top-down and political. The people on the ground understand the problems, and a lot of them understand how they could be fixed. Therefore they are ignored by the powers that be.

Politics affects it with targets, targets, targets. I've had terrible experiences with the NHS. Waited months to see a consultant, err.. registrar, only to be shoved back out the door 5minutes later with medication I'd already tried. Problem not solved, target met.

Hope you're feeling ok Jaysay!

The Discharge Unit sounds like somewhere to dump unwanted patients so their beds are free for the next set o inmates. In and out, quick as can be lets not have any nasty patients cluttering up the wards, numbers up patients out!

I apologise to Jaysay and Polly for bumping this thread but I have just come across this story on the BBC website. BBC NEWS | England | Manchester | Pensioner loses limb in plaster

Thanks for that kate, I don't get the Telegraph now and don't always go and read it on line. The fact is that I wrote to the patient care manager (as I was told to do by the staff in the departure loung) that was six months ago and I haven't had a reply, just as Willow said. I can only hope that does infact speed things up and make things better, but only time will tell. When I was in the Royal again in September, when theysaid I could go home I refused point blank to go and waite in the Departure Loung, and all the ward sister said was I don't blame you, that said it all
