4 horses were killed in Darwen yesterday by vandals who set fire to the stables.

It's very near to where I live. About 2 miles south of Darwen town centre and in a decent area.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more response to this story. Perhaps if it had been a Daily Mail article it would have warranted a 7 page thread? :D

I just can't bring myself around to think what makes people do things like this, is just incomprehensible. The thing is if they are caught they just get a slap on the wrist as Loz said:(

I consider myself a really understanding person and can usually try to see someone else's perspective on things or try and understand why they do things but in this instance I can't for the life of me understand what possesses someone to do this. It's mindless, cruel and if it were up to me the people who did it would be branded with a hot iron across their forehead.

I know I might come across as a bleeding liberal every now and then - but I actually think 'an eye for an eye' and punishment should be severe when it's really due!

I saw it on the news last night, they were showing pics of the horses and giving a little eulogy for each of them......'this is sandy, she was 3 years old and liked eating mints and having cuddles' (that kinda thing)it was really sad and the poor little kids crying over their beloved pet was awful. The fireman said they had to restrain people thatwere trying to run into the fire to save them.

Well done Darwen Police.

Under the English system of things does that mean that they will be tried as adults?

The Telegraph gives the lady's details as Mary Howarth aged 60 of Sough Farm stable blocks, off Cranberry Lane, Darwen.

Flip the keyboard over and give it a few lightish whacks. You'd be surprised at the amount of crud that falls out...worth a dip ;)

As I said in an earlier post, this incident happened fairly close to where I live and last night the police posted printed notes through the doors of people living in the vicinity.

The note says that 3 young men have been arrested and will appear at Blackburn Magistrates Court this morning, charged with burglary and arson offences. The accused have no prior convictions and had been out drinking, to celebrate a birthday.

An application will be made to remand the accused in custody prior to their trial.

The scumbags will probably get community service, and then sent on holiday to get over the trauma.

Thats my problem with this.
Yeah they have been caught but the punishment never seems to fit the crime, whatever they get won't be a deterrent and will more likely than not reoffend.
It's disgusting pure and simple.

They also will be charged with cruelty to animals, death resulting, won't they. I do hope they come down hard on these kids.

One can hope ... but laws against cruelty to animals differ widely ... Canada and Ontario are toughening the penalties for cruelty to animals ... but this is a strange and troubling case ... in animal cruelty cases it is usually the owners who are at fault; this seems a lot like a booze filled act of mindless stupidity. I hope that English law is like Canadian law, where being plastered is not a defence in a court of law.

MargaretR 17-07-2008 18:36

Re: Horses Killed in darwen.

Arson is judged to be a more serious offence than animal cruelty - perhaps Blazey can confirm

cashman 17-07-2008 18:46

Re: Horses Killed in darwen.

arson was always classed as very serious in my day, so they will probably get double time community service, no faith in justice whatsoever.:(

Re: Horses Killed in darwen.

This brings to mind the chap who lived in Church. During divorce proceedings he took a chainsaw to their furniture and then set the house alight.
There was no-one in the house at the time - it is debatable whether he was endangering neighbours ----He did a few years prison for that

Incidentally he later committed suicide in a gruesome way by self inflicted knife wounds which turned the room into a bloodbath

It didn't say anything about that on the letter I received, but I hope so.

It said on the radio today that they'd been bailed to appear at a later date. One of the conditions of the bail was that they couldn't return to Lancashire until the trial. Seemed a strange condition. I wonder if they were from outside the county?

I don't know about that. If they are held in custody till the trial, and if they are found guilty, won't the time they served be taken off their sentence at a rate of 2 days off the sentence for every one day served while awaiting trial? Which would mean that they would serve less time if they were denied bail.

i would say its more likely that the ones that set the fire live in the area of the stables, and its quite likely the horse owner do too. that would be why they have been sent away on a holiday, they have been named in the local paper, and this article is online, god bless those horses and owners.
