I know now why we're in the middle of a recession...

....and it's nothing to do with politics!

This afternoon i finally decided to go out and buy a new cooker. I went to Currys first. After looking at cookers for about 15 minutes with no one coming over to help someone walked past and as he was heading past he asked (almost over his shoulder) did i want any help? He sent over a young boy who didn't have the foggiest clue about the cookers on display so I left.

I then went round to Comet and pretty much the same thing happened.

I came home without a cooker!

We're in the middle of a recession because customer service is down to an all time low!

You should have done what I did. When my washing machine recently went pop, I went on the internet, found a site reviewing washing machines, chose four that seemed to fit my needs, head off to Currys, find one of the four, find scrotey assistant and say "One of these, mate". Total time ten minutes, easy!:D

I have bought my last two cookers without going anywhere near a shop.
Spend 15 minutes searching the web looking at hundreds, instead of an hour visiting one shop

This lack of knowledge on the part of sales assistants really annoys me too. I recently asked for some information regarding a product on display in a shop and the reply I got from the spotty oik behind the counter was "I dunno nuffink about vem, me."

Next time I shall go in disguise.

I did eventually buy one from Toplex in Blackburn.

Went in - they had a much smaller selection so was less confusing - I was asked what i was looking for and they helped a lot.

Good choice....We have all been tempted to go to the 'Mega Plonkers' in the past....but we live and learn...at a cost.

It must depend on the item you want to buy as well as where you go. I'm looking to have a new bathroom suite installed (it means all re-tiling etc.) and I want a new(ish) car.

Sainsbury's Home Base nearly fell over themselves to show off all their bathroom suites but lost out when I said I wanted them to plan it and do everything while I just - watched. They don't supply that service. B & Q do! The salesman was champing at the bit to get out here with his laptop for a free survey and planning service.

Polar Ford didn't have what I wanted - I'm going for yet another 5 door Fiesta, not brand new but less than 18 months old. It was almost a case of, "We'll have the coffee on next time you call", and for a humble Fiesta I thought that was pretty good going.

I think one problem with Comet, who I've used a fair bit in the past, is they don't train their staff on specific products. You can sometimes get lucky with an assistant who has learned a fair bit about some items but, on the whole, they just read what's on the manual.

Do you go for gas hob and leccy oven in the end? I like our induction hob, it is so easy to clean.

I just get Rhonda to wipe it over when she has finished cooking and it looks like new

Gas hobs are ok but I always found them a pain to clean when you boil the milk over :D

Gas hob and leccy double oven. Fully programmable, with a grill in the top oven bit.

It would have been a bit complicated to go to fully leccy as we have duel fuel at the moment.

I'd much rather have a gas hob. Far more controllable.

Must admit id rather have either dual fuel or gas. Have electric at the moment but didnt have much choice when getting it (had to find the cheapest one i could) but when I get another one i want a gas hob, its too awkward with electric hob, when something boils and you turn it down to simmer youve to take the pan off the ring til it cools a bit, its a pain
