C.H.A.V... What does it mean?

A report the other day revealed what chav actually meant and even the kids didnt know the meaning.
Apparently it means...." Council Housed And Violent " and the police have been using the term for many years. Now all of a sudden its come to light and the do gooders are trying to say that it shouldnt be used as its derogatory.

Admitedly i didnt know what it meant but for it to stop being used just because its meaning has come to light is ridiculous. http://www.blackpoolweb.com/forum/im...es/grrrrrr.gif

Its high time that folk stopped playing around with words in fear of offending and started to get back to saying what they mean.

IMO Its far more hypocritical to dance around words than to speak the truth, No wonder the youth of today are beginning to speak a language all of thier own..

I was thinking that too.

Why would you call someone a name if you didn't even know what the name meant?

I don't say chav myself, I say dobber.......and I shall continue to apply the word dobber to anyone I believe to be a dobber. :mosher:

Maybe we should get posh and refer to them as Richard Craniums. The term CHAV is so out of date anyway. Most of them don't live in council houses :D

Ok sorry I put that badly. No thats not what I mean at all.
What I should have said is that this meaning has apparently been used by the Police for quite some time, now all of a sudden because the meaning has come to light people are saying that it shouldnt be used anymore. why??
IMO if its been used by the police to catorgorise certain individuals all this time then why shouldnt they keep using it for the same purpose.

Think what Cherokee is trying to say that she didnt realise what the acronym stood for, rather than not knowing what the word meant

Im not saying its ok for any name calling at all . What Im saying is that if its something thats been going on for yrs and even the general public have used the term freely, then why should the police stop using a term just because the do gooders have discovered what it means.

No you are quite wrong there.A chav is an uneducated hooded missfit who relays on the state to keep them and is no use to anyone. But enough of this talk about MP's.It is wrong to group council house tenants together and stigmatise them all in this way.Having said that I didn't know what it meant till you mentioned it:hidewall:

It isnt me that is catorgorising at all, My interpretation of a chav has always been very much the same as yours. This was something on BBC News 24 the other day and it just got me thinking. And to be honest I dont think the police should change their abbreviating just becase what they are abbreviating has come to light.:)

cashman 28-07-2008 00:16

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?

i agree its wrong to stigmatise council house tenents, no question, but the question is to me- WHO actually decided what CHAV meant?whoever that was bears the responsibilty, cos i'm near certain most folk have no idea what it stands fer. plus its bin used fer yonks innocently, knowing the meaning aint gonna make much differance to me, cos it aint said in " that way"

Apparently it means...." Council Housed And Violent "

Apparently this is a 'backronym', or in other words, an acronym that has been devised afterwards for a word already in use. Another invented acronym for Chav is 'Council House Adolescent Vermin'.

It's generally acknowledged that the term Chav is actually derived from the Romani word 'chavi', meaning child.

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?

For all do-gooders and Political Correct types to be complaining seems a bit much , probably 'invented' by one of them (Home Office employee) if the truth was ever to come out , as a way of identifying a special social class without being accused of racial profiling

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?

On the theme of police names, in Liverpool they're called the Bizzies, and in parts of Manchester they're called the Dibble, when I was young (many years ago) we used to call the police Rozers, can't think where that came from ;)

WillowTheWhisp 28-07-2008 11:03

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?

The name 'chav' existed long before the police hijacked it. It has been used to mean a certain style of dress and behaviour (Burbery and bling?) for a long time now too. Just because the police use it to mean 'council housed and violent' doesn't mean that applies to all chavs and doesn't mean that is what other people mean when they say 'chav'. The difference is the poloice are saying 'C.H.A.V.' and other people are saying 'chav'.
