How terribly sad.
I'm feeling a bit 'victor' at the moment anyway in a 'what's the world coming to' sort of way!
I would love to hear some truly uplifting, nice news, something to make everybody happy.

Re: How Very Sad

a good reason for getting a milk man :D

BERNADETTE 06-08-2008 13:31

Re: How Very Sad

Surely the neighbours would start wondering no matter how private a person he was. It doesn't bear thinking about that a person can not be seen for that length of time without anybody wondering why. A sad reflection on todays society unfortunately

Re: How Very Sad

Hardly a thread to be joking on

entwisi 06-08-2008 13:32

Re: How Very Sad

Depending on when he died, if it was cold he wouldn't have smelt that bad as he decomposed, by teh time it warmed up he would have been well gone

very sad that he wasn't noticed though......

emamum 06-08-2008 13:36

Re: How Very Sad

I wasnt joking, If he had a milkman it would have been a week at the most.

Re: How Very Sad

A very sad way for Accrington to make national headline news.:(

I think we all have a responsibility to keep an eye out for our neighbours, especially the elderly.

Wonder what it was that alerted the police at the end of the day ?

Yes, thanks Emamum, just found another report in the LET .. was Cllr. Got after concerns from a neighbour :-

Huncoat man lay dead at home for up to two years (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Garinda's right, makes you feel a little guilty that it is Accrington, an area which has always been known for friendly neighbours, etc.

Think may hear one or two offshoots from this in media discussions.

Re: How Very Sad

What a damned shame, very sad.

Not sure how I would feel if it had been one of my neighbours. I don’t think I would be feeling too impressed with myself and feeling guilty to boot.

He may have been a “private” man but 2 years….very sad story

Re: How Very Sad

The fact that he lived in a terraced property makes it all the more strange, I was brought up in a terraced house and verybody used to know everybody elses business. But its a very sad reflection on how things have changed today.

was thinkin along them lines meself, when i was a kid if some elderly person hadn't been seen fer a couple of days, they were missed, even those who kept to themselves, a sad indictment on today. IMHO.

Re: How Very Sad

This is a shame and should not have happened
but just a thought if all his bills have been paid by direct debit i take it his pension will have been payed into his account will all this have to be taken back out of the estate ??

Not if he left the lights and oven on.

Was on the news about this, it amazes me that not one of the neighbours was concerned earlier. From the report it sounded like he had lived there all his life.

There may be circumstances mitigating the lack of neighbourly response…struggling to think of any off the top of my head tho :(

Not bothered would be the only one that springs to mind:mad: The newsreaders faces spoke volumes:o

Re: How Very Sad

The neighbours that were interviewed on the news were all 20,s 30's, 40's probably out at work all day so not seeing him would be normal I suspect, also he had a notice in his window for people to use the back door, another reason why nobody would notice any activity at the house. Its very sad indeed, hermit or not.

cashman 06-08-2008 20:59

Re: How Very Sad

just heard a guy on 9-00 news radio lancs saying he was well known years back n there would probably be a good turn out at his funeral, seems sad they knew him n nobody had seen him fer 2 yrs n nowt was said. i think the good turnout if there is one will be Guilt.

It is so sad when nobody cares,,,, if he has left any money ,,there will suddenly be plenty of so called family and friends ,,,MAKES YOU SICK,,,

Re: How Very Sad

I maybe wrong but I recall the news saying they had only found one relative.

Still its quite sad that he was such a loner for so long. how can the stench have been missed let alone his presence.? It makes your realise neighbourhoods(sp) arent what they used to be.

BERNADETTE 06-08-2008 23:35

Re: How Very Sad

I have only one neighbour here and notice if their lights aren't turned on at night. Sorry but working or not you notice what is happening next door especially for two bloody years!! Think it is absolutely terrible

You're right.

He didn't live in some isolated farm up on the moors, this was a terraced house in Huncoat.

You'd have thought his immediate neighbours might have noticed if a light, or a television, or any other noise, hadn't come from the house next door in those two years.

I'm suprised no one was after his vote in the local elections...let's hope he didn't vote, whilst he was sadly deceased.

Currently there is an investigation into vote rigging, and an abuse of the postal/proxy voting system, after the local elections in May.

According to the investigation into vote rigging in the local by-elections yes it could and probably is possible. But hardly think this is the thread to be asking folk questions, a bit of respect would be more in order!!

I wasn't being disrespectful.

I was just trying to think who might have tried to contact him in those two years, as apparently his bills were paid by direct debit, and presumably his pension paid into his bank account.

You can sadly imagine this happening in an anonymous big city, not a small Lancashire mill town.

I know you weren't being disrespectful. I was answering Royboy's post, could not see the reason for it:(

Unfortunately nobody spotted that there was no other money than direct debits being used, what a sad world we live in!!!

So presumably his gas and electric meters haven't been read for two years , but the companies have just been deducting estimated amounts from his account , would have thought that there should have been something in the system to throw up some sign of a red flag .
As others have said , its a sad reflection on todays society

Although I posted the news report I haven't made a comment on it till now.
Money seems to ,for some strange reason come into the equation.Reminds me of when I worked at Rothwells in Church and a worker dropped dead just after he'd clocked in.The managers response was to make sure the bloke was clocked out.

Sad very Sad.Your not a person your a number.:confused::confused::confused:
