UK Biobank

I have been asked to participate in this research project
U K Biobank Home Page
I haven't read all the blurb yet - just wondered if any more of you here have been asked.
From what I have gleaned so far I think I will be doing it-
free health monitoring for the rest of my life (like BUPA checks but no charge:))
I wont be asked to be a guinea pig for drugs.
The health checks will compensate for my docs inadequacies:rolleyes:

I got a letter today too. I'm not sure yet whether to do it or not. I might have to change my appt time if I decide to do it.

Re: UK Biobank

I have now looked at the videos - not quite a health check in the BUPA sense but still seems worth participating

didn't think you were over 45 Gayle :D

Re: UK Biobank

I'm not - it says 40 to 69 on my letter.

I've just phoned them up and got a different appt date. I'm still not 100% sure but no harm in considering it for now.

I received a letter from Biobank this morning addressed to my husband, but sadly, he died a year ago.

My other half went last Saturday Afternoon at 3.10pm Gayle, you can virtually pick your own time. I also got a letter this morning, but I've turned it down, I'm being monitered that closely these days its a bit pointless for me really

Ah, that one, local checks yeah right Bury is local? The few I've discussed it with and myself have filled the form in saying yes we would be willing to participate for 'local' checks but pointed out that Bury isn't local, wheareas we have Accy Vic and two new 'health centres' that are local so if they want to come to us, then, we will take part.

It could have been if I'd only mentioned me as in myself but if you notice I had mentioned that it was discussed with others, so perhaps you are just taking the other royal 'wee'?

They have to get a certain number, so when someone asked says 'no' they will invite the next on the list

depends how subhuman you are whether they reach you;)

Smacks of the private sector moving in ....careful ..they'll be wanting your details.. why not just go to your own GP for check ups?... if you don't have confidence in him/her then register with another.. simple

Right name, right place of birth, just wrong person.

It was a really sweet letter, with a S.A.E., so I told her I wasn't her dad, and I hope she finds him.:(

It's nothing to do with having a check up for individuals. It's a research study to look at lots of different factors to do with health. The people who take part in the study won't particularly benefit.

OK confused.. what department/orginization is conducting this study?

Gayle 08-08-2008 20:06

Re: UK Biobank

The Government's Department of Health.

The start of the letter says

We are writing to ask for your help in studying the prevention and treatment of cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, dementia, joint problems and many other serious diseases.

I think the idea is that they study 500,000 people now and find out if there are any markers, indications that might be identifiable and as time goes on they continue to monitor our health. When groups of people have heart attacks etc - they look back to see if there were any common links early on that at the moment are not recognised as signs.
