if you didn't get the results this time you can resit or even take it as an opportunity to re-evaluate what you really want to do with your life. I went to Uni for the wrong reasons( that I had no real idea what else to do) and wish I'd taken a year out to travel etc before deciding what I want to do. |
Re: Well, they let me in
Well done everybody who completed their A levels successfully. You'll find out when you actually get to uni that the actually grades aren't important at all, unless of course you could've got the scholarship ;)
I have had some disappointed people texting me today but I keep reminding them that it isn't the end of the world, and you can always try again or try a different route to what you want to be, or even something entirely different to what you planned. I'm just working out my timetable for next year and it is lost of rubbish 9am starts and 6pm finishes, so I hope you have better time tables than me! What are you all going to study and where at!?! |

How many people who say this could really get straight A's on the exams with no problems? I wouldn't contend that GCSE is easier than O level, but A level is a different ball game I think, and it really isn't fair to dub down the hard work that is put into studying for A levels at all. I did rubbish in mine so I'm not trying to stick up for my own efforts at all, but I have a lot of respect for those who get straight A's. |
Re: Well, they let me in
I have a really really, really really, really really sore head.

An A* would demand that kind of work, therefore it wouldn't be so easy to be spoon fed the information and it would divide the brightest from the bright. I always had a problem with being spoon fed information, I found it really patronising. I guess that is why I am doing well at university on a course that is 3 parts self study 1 part lectures and seminars. I don't think I could ever do well at college because I don't really like the lazy methods used. I think A level results get better and better each year because they don't change, so you can question spot. Not a good habit to get into though if you actually want to succeed in the long run. Obviously I am not a teacher or part of an exam board or something, so I can only give my viewpoint from when I was actually at college studying A levels myself. I once asked a question in history about WWII, think it was relating to the actual war itself and the planes used, type of thing anyone might find interesting, only to receive the answer that it wasn't going to be on the exam so I didn't need to know it. In other words, you aren't learning the subject when you go to college to do A levels, you're simply learning the exam and I found that quite disheartening on a personal level. |
Re: Well, they let me in

Re: Well, they let me in

I know, that reaction is an old one from when the non-red-bricks used to be polytechnics. Just a side note though - entry grades are due to demand, not linked with standard of courses at all. So if many people want to go to Manc Met or Leeds Met because of being close to home/the nightlife/whatever, the grades go up because the demand is high, not nevessarily because the course itself is sought after. |
Re: Well, they let me in
For instance, I'm going to Aberdeen which ranks higher for my course than University of Manchester. However, because the demand is low at Aberdeen due to it's out in the sticks location, the entry grades were CCC compared to Manchester's AAB.
|
Re: Well, they let me in
Aberdeen is booming at the present, ‘bout the only place not feeling the effects of a looming recession.
Have a ball but take yer balaclava, it's always bloody cold there :):D |

Unless of course it is Southampton Solent... then the grades do actually reflect the negative aspects through and through :p Higher grade standards are also set to attract the bette quality students rather than all the rabble. It'd be wrong to say it is all on demand for the location of the uni, but of course that is a part of it. |
