Fortnightly bin collection

Hi everyone, i know its been a while since i posted anything, hope your all doing well. Just thought i'd raise the issue on Bin collections.

personally, i think its silly that they only do it every two weeks. Its a bad idea for large families. The crazy thing is that the coucil and envionmental officers have been moaning about excess garbage bags out on streets or cluttering up in gardens. But can they really blam us? Where else can you put bin bags if your wheelie bin is full from a weeks refuse already?
I lived in yorkshire 27 years and we had collections every week. Our streets were constantly clean, and i still is to this day. ( I went to se my mum other day lol )

Anyway, just wondering whether im alone on this one or not.

Holla back!

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

I think it is too. I'm sick of the flies that swarm around the bin, every time I lift the lid they all fly out. Its unhygienic and I think its disgusting.

I recycle as much as I can but still have a full bin every two weeks, often with the lid partly open which doesn't make the fly problem any better.

Not just that, a lot of people where I live don't have lids on their bins (for whatever reason) so you can imagine the smell.

Bring back weekly collections I say.

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

It's all supposed to be designed to get us to recycle. Really all it seems to do is lead to more aggravation and more fly-tipping.

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

Personally, I dont have a problem with the fortnightly collection of my normal waste (very rarey have any overflow) but what I dont like is having to keep recycling lying around for 2 weeks at a time. Ya cant keep it out for the fact that someone will just spread it for you (I am near a school so its bound to happen) And I dont like keeping rubbish around the house but dont have much of a choice. It was easier when you could just dump it in a bin and it was collected, not have to sort it all yourselves and keep it sat around for a week or two til the next collection

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

We've had a few of these threads before.

If you are recycling properly you shouldn't have a problem fitting your rubbish into your bin.

Unless you have a lot of people living in your house or babies in nappies...the nappies do take up a lot of room in the bin and oooooh, the honk!

In these circumstances I believe you can request a bigger bin.

We had to put bags of used nappies in the car in between collections and take them to the tip but those days are over, thank God.

pipinfort 30-08-2008 21:41

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

I recycle and compost religiously( the wife says obsessively)also anything to good to bin goes to the charity shop and every 2 weeks with a family of 4 our wheelie bin is only half full at the most, so in our case the collection every 2 weeks works great............:):)

danny27 30-08-2008 21:42

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

The inasnity is that we have three children with us ( thats 5 of us in total lol ) one in nappies still ( so you can imagine how much that will take up every day ) and one being toilet trained - so the odd mishap results in more refuse etc...etc... Point is that even though we do recycle...we STILL generate large amounts of waste that we have to result in putting rubbish bags outside next to the bins. Either that or we keep it indoors...I DONT THINK SO!!!

I have 2 in nappies at the mo and know exactly what your saying, but i put all my nappies in the bin and from time to time take the "clean" rubbish up to the tip, I can tell if its gonna get too full (not putting stinky nappies in my car, its bad enough with the boys lol)

Like I said, I believe that if there are 5 or more of you in the house you can request a bigger bin.....so contact the council. :)

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

Lilly, i have done that...but they only sent me a normal size bin ( which i might add took 5 weeks because i had to re-order a bin because some chavs nicked mine. But yeah i think a larger bin might solve our problem however im still for Weekly collections.

Keep our streets Clean!

Dear god, i remember when we had two in nappies, chirst that was awful!
The memories are still fresh because we've only just got one of them to use the toilet...nearly lol

We have a 1 year old in nappies and i have to say they hardly take up any room and the bigger bins for 5+ in a house are apparently a thing of the past as they were to heavy for the bin wagon to lift............

Tell me about it, another joy of having twins, and no matter how hard I (and others) try they just cant get used to the whole potty / toilet thing

They know you go "wee" on the toilet but just cant get it themselves lol

So until they do, will still be going through what seems like hundreds of nappies a week

Great...then im screwed then? lol

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

our four year old goes wee on the toilet just fine...its Number two he's struggling with.
Very worrying seeing as he starts school wednesday. We've had all these "so called" professionals advising us to do this and that...but nothing seems to be working :(

The culture as it is in the UK today needs very serious thought and consideration......If you put a bin out for collection and some 'Noddy' decides I'ts too full....you have got a problem.
If someone of the 'Yobo' culture sets fire to it...you have got a problem.
If you want to discard some household furniture which is no longer wanted...Again you have a problem.
Why not take a leaf out of Spains book.....The government do if they are trying to convince you that taxation on a particullar item is justified.
Spanish youngsters do not go out of their way to create havoc in the communities that they live in.
In the cities there is unrest and that is the same in all cities in the world.
I live in a one block of six that are separated with a garden and swimming pool....which are very well looked after and used by all the inhabitants of these blocks.
There is a separate disposal area for rubbish....six large bins for general rubbish.....two large bins for plastic....two for paper and cardboard and one for glass.
Any discarded furniture can be placed behind the general rubbish bins and if the 'Pickies' as we call them, dont get to them first...they are removed.
The general rubbish bins are emptied every night...summer or winter.
The other containers are removed when full at the request of the building administrators.
There are 1500 people living in this Urbanisation.....How many streets and houses is that?

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

When I lived in Bolton, I had a council house, and once every now and again I think it was a few times a year, the Council would run a skip day, whereby you could basically put outside your house anything you didn't want, ie furniture etc and they would remove it for free.

They also used to provide big skips and you can just put all your rubbish in. It was great, obviously the idea was to stop fly tipping and it worked really well.

I know its an expensive thing to do, but justifiable??

Expensive for an individual but the waste would be taken to a registered transfer station and sorted....The then out and out rubbish would be offerd as landfill and that is an expensive.....tax I might add.

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

The fortnightly collections have been ok for me, mind you there are only two of us in the household, plus I recycle like a lunatic (my empty Rizla paper packet has to go in the cardboard lol ). Do my share of composting too.

Bet it’s a struggle to keep on top of things especially with a young family.

HBC stopped using the big bins ages ago. They found they were easily damaged when emptying them due to the weight of them or something. Now if they think you need it they give you an extra bin. Not sure if you get another normal size one or a small one.

I don't usually have a problem and recycle most things as I should - we are 3 children, 1 adult ( the missus ) and me ;)

It can be a nightmare.
We live in a block of flats,12 in total, and use communal bins and by the time they get emptied they are overflowing and in hot weather it stinks!
The amount of council tax that we pay should cover a weekly collection surely?

the thing that really annoys me and is also ridiculous, the fortnightly recycle, the bin fer bottles, tin bag, paper bag, we store them in the yard, but have to carry em through the house dripping wet when its been raining, to place em at the front door, cos they will NOT collect em from the back. have had umpteen debates with the council about this, older or disabled would find this practice very difficult, plus aint very good when these articles are dripping on yer carpet,we recycle but these dozy prats DO NOT encourage people to do so.:(

I am really sorry but i have to say it ( at the risk of diverting a thread ) but i thought you didnt have a bin?
I thought you were sick of cats ripping your bin bags open ?

I trust you have recieved your bin now? lol

Maybe you should use real nappies.

I would`nt like communal bins.....folk could over fill them all the time and you may only have a couple of black bags......it would drive me mad, mad mad......:dflam:

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

I have no problems with the collection.

Personally I find wheelie bins are much more hygenic than the old bins with detachable lids, or black bin bags, which were easily over turned by a determined dog, and left the contents as easy pickings for vermin.

churchman phil 31-08-2008 13:58

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

Well there's 9 in our household and we have just the one wheelie bin. We recycle everything we can and there's usually room left at the top of the bin!

Thats the problem in a nutshell!
People take advantage of them and the majority of the people here don't recycle either so that makes it worse.

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

blackburn have realised their big mistake in doing 2 weekly collections and have reverted back to weekly collections, aslo yorkshire or the parts i go to as far as i know has never changed from the weekly collections and collects recycled and household waste weekly but as usual HBC rather than address the problem and admit it dosnt work will blame us and try imposing fines because their system is unmanagable

people are having to make seperate trips to the tip which isnt on , my elderly mother rather than have to clean up after teh bin men gets a friend to take her rubbish to the tip as HBC actualy tried fining her for rubbish the binmen spilt out of her bin

some may manage to cope with the system but i drive round accy a lot and see a hell of a lot of binbags left on the street by binmen that are told not to take them which end up either shredded by cats or kicked around teh street by kids resulting in rubbish all over the place , is it any wonder there are so many problems with vermin

BERNADETTE 01-09-2008 12:28

If I put mine out it gets emptied weekly, think it is because I am in the centre of town. Doesn't even get full in a fortnight just being me here and the grandkids when they stay

Re: Fortnightly bin collection

The bins didnt get emptied last bin day, and sat at the end of the back street (outside somebodies house) for over a week, by which time i am sure many will have had rubbish waiting, my guess is that if we have frequent snow, the bins are more likely to be almost a monthly collection. Further to this, when all this recycling business was first introduced, it was supposed to be about the environment, and the council reckoned it didnt line thier pockets, if this is so, why are there talks of stopping the waste paper collections now that the money for waste paper has hit rock bottom?

was wondering that meself, also if they do stop the waste paper collection it raises the point of where do ya put it? our wheely bin would not take it most weeks, with a fortnightly collection, as these clowns will probably NOT revert back to weekly, is this another way to "FINE" us plebs for overfilling? would not surprise me.
