Depends on the postie for us, the regular 1 gets it here between 9 and 10am all others when ever they make it and we usually get someone elses mail thrown in!

Sorry to disappoint but I received my mail at 6.15pm once. Turned out the postman could only read a very limited amount of English. Royal Mail sure incurred my wrath the next day and postie was dismissed.

Mine is regular around 10.30 a.m., but know what you mean Vicky, wish I hadn't got mine today either ... letter from Income Tax, they are grabbing 50% off my very small private pension and bill from E-on showing new increase ... :(

I pay over £500 a year in Income Tax- they treat Retirement Pension as a big chunk of your tax free personal allowance so that they can take a bigger slice from your 'company pension'.

I got a bill too - VAT@17% + 'shipping admin fee' on the vitamins I get from California :mad: - (needed due to failures in NHS)
....don't tell me to go to H & B - they dont sell them - the only source I found in UK was in Manchester and they charged 60% more!

Ha! Emamum, if you'd seen him you'd see that Neil and everyone else can't fail to notice him!

I know the postie Neil is referring to. He's a big fella, tall and well built. He has long hair and a beard. He wears shorts summer and winter.....don't know why.

I don't think it's ozzpostie on here. I'm sure he's mentioned that he's married....this fella isn't.

How daft is this? As I was going out yesterday afternoon after all that rain I found a box of energy saving light bulbs left on the doorstep. If the postman knocked I didn't hear him so why not just post a card for me to collect the parcel??:confused:

He probably didn't want to carry them back to the Post Office and was saving you the walk Knowing full well that they would not be stolen as everyone has a glut of them.:D:D

This happened to me and I asked the postman about it....apparently they started off knocking on doors and leaving cards if there was no answer when delivering these bulbs.

However, there were many complaints about this as people hadn't ordered them and were annoyed at having to trek to the office so they started just leaving them on doorsteps.

So it is now up to the postman to decide if you actually want to receive your mail safely or not. I wonder else they leave on the doorstep to be nicked?

I don't know about posties Neil butpeopl who deliver for mail order never knock on your door when they deliver new catalogues, they just leave them on our doorstep, which is daft to me seeing they must cost a few quid to produce

nearly everyone in the country got these free lightbulbs of which we were told by management to leave on the doorsteps. so dont blame the postie we were doing our jobs as we were directed to by the bosses.
when we left cards before we got inundated with thousands of the bloody things the amount of complaints that people had about comming down town to pick them up was one of the main reasons why this happened.

I know this is dragging up an old thread but I received my post at 5.30 pm today - it hardly ever arrives before dinnertime but this is the latest it has ever been delivered. Cheered my youngest son up though, he's been waiting for a parcel all week and had given up on it when he got home from school and thought we'd had no post.

Question: Is there a genuine reason why the public decry the now common later delivery of mail? What advantage does one get form receiveing main so early as opposed to receiving mail at sometime during the working day, not to mention Saturday morning when many of us see this as part of the weekend rest period?

Once upon a time Royal Mail had an objective for each foot delivery postman to have posted the last letter in the bag by 09:30. There are many commercial reasons why they have moved to longer, later delivery spans all of which make good business sense with the apparent exception of customer satisfaction. So what is it about the early delivery that appeals. Real benefit OR traditional expectation? Over to you...

Seem to remember in the bad owd days before post codes had ever been dreamt of that it was possible to post a letter /card (envelope marked 'Local' ) in the morning and there was a good chance it would be delivered in the afternoon post , This was in the days when the Post Office was operated for the benefit of the customers .
The sorry assed excuse that mail takes longer these days is because more mail is processed is a load of tosh, people probably still get the same amount of proper mail these days even though no one writes letters anymore , the biggest problem is junk mail being delivered every day instead of being 'bundled' and delivered once a week. ;)

As recently as the 80's local first class mail was extracted from early collections and delivered on the second delivery. However increases in posted mail volumes it became impossible to get all local mails back to the local office in time to ensure that all local mails got the same level of service. The advent of new generation sorting machines and improvements in national networks meant that very little mail (an average of only 11 letters per delivery) was hitting the second delivery and these were invariably second class letters. Simple maths dictated that if you were paying the postman 2 hours wages to deliver mail with a revenue value of only a couple of quid at best - Royal Mail had to do something about it. They did initially attempt to reinstate the earlier standard of the 09:30 last letter but this would have meant reducing the vast majority of postmen to part time contracts. Of course there are many part timers there now but also many full timers were retained as a result of getting all the days mail into one longer delivery.

Source of my evidence... 20 years service as a postman then supervisor then senior manager in Accrington and across the North West.
